It isn't some rare condition modern medicine can't cure. It was his choice not to get it treated. He refused surgery since it started out small when he was a teenager and continued to refuse it despite its monstrous growth because he's a Jehovah's witness and doesn't want someone else's Jesus entering him in a blood transfusion or some nonsense.
