The great classics are one thing that sorts the men from the boys, and the women from the girls. This is not actually one of the greatest ABBA songs - its chorus is not as sock-it-to-'em unforgettable as "Eagle"'s or "Gimme gimme gimme"'s or a couple of dozen others, but it is a haunting and inventive treatment of a great legend, and very few other popular singers have it in them to produce something with such depth and literacy.
@NanoShines hi! My daughter is Cassandra and SHE is 8 and HER birthday is Sept 26/03....may God bless you dear. I just found this song and I listened to ABBA when I was a young girl and never heard this one before . I think it is great!
I LOVE ABBA!...................want to hear some juicy gossip from their '77 australian tour that they dare not print.......go to "i see red split enz nzoz1977" and press "see all" to find the 3 hidden comments.
ABBA's music grew and evolved over the years but there is not on song that they did that was not great and I loved them all, of course it did no harm that the women were also beautiful as well as talented. :-)
@kassandra227 Actually, the person they are singing about's name was spelled that way, and my own name is spelled that way. I know what you meant, but I just wanted to point it out. you should look up Cassandra in greek mythology and read about her. It's really interesting.
Another haunting brilliant song from the fab Swedes. If only they could have made more albums and songs, seems their time was cut short, but they did shine brilliantly in their time and their music will shine on for years to come.
This gorgeous, breathaker of a beautiful, majestic, historical and devastating tune is music at its most spectacuar and it has A-SIDE written all over it, but then so did most of their stuff, but their post 1977 stuff couldn't be beaten, especially their final towering moments-and this is the ultimate fortress.
my name is Cassandra, my mom is from Canada and she named me after this song, and im so glad because it is one of the most sweetest, beautifulest songs int his world. I hope people will take this to their heart and listen to the words
@musicluvr4ever1 I agree, this is one of their more underrated songs. Both beautiful and sad in so many ways. This was also intended for their 9th album which obviously didn't happen, and was included on "The Visitors" in subsequent re-releases.
These two lovely women,Agnetha and Frida, can really sing, not like today's trash singers, like Cascada or the romanian "star",Inna, with computer-made voices.I hate today's music.Old is gold-whoever said this deserves a Nobel prize.
Cassandra was the first to see the body of her brother Hector being brought back to Troy, she sought shelter in the temple of Athena, where she was violently abducted and raped by the coward Ajax the lesser, Poseidon killed him later by his acts. She was taken as a concubine by King Agamemnon and sailed to Mycenae . Unbeknownst to this dreadful King, while he was away at war, his wife Clytemnestra, had an affair with Aegisthus, then this pair murdered both Agamemnon and Cassandra.
an epic tribute to Greek Mithology, Cassandra priestess of Apolo, daughter of Queen Hecuba and King Priam of Troy, sister of Paris and sister of the Noble warrior Hector of Troy killed by the despicable Achilles. She had the gift of prophecy given by Apollo, but when she refuse his love, he placed a curse on her so that no one would ever believe her predictions, she warned the Trojans about the Trojan Horse, tha fall of Troy, the death of Agamemnon, and her own demise, but no one belived her.
My fantasy short story "Kassandra's Last Warning" was inspired by this song. In the middle immortal shapechanger weeps herself to sleep. I wrote this scene after weeks of being haunted by that image from the song. Then I had to write the surrounding story.
You can find the story on ShapechangerTales web site.
Κασσάνδρα is a Greek woman's name and it means "the one who has a shining man"! Cassandra is also called the most western peninsula of Chalkidiki, in Central Macedonia, Greece.
I don't know 'The Visitors' very well, but this song 'Cassandra' is new to me - it's got the ring of a folk or perhaps Chris de Burgh song, with the distinctive ABBA feel and production, of course! Great to hear Annifrid given the lead! I'll be listening to this track again!!
If a song is written by Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, we use the term "Kunstlied" in German - meaning "art song", tho the German term is international I suppose...
...and I too suppose that THIS song and many other ABBA songs gotta be called ART SONGS rather than simple pop songs!!! =´-)
No other band that reaches our hearts as ABBA ... to me is something inexplicable, profound. Who loves art, loves, sees that life is beautiful and we have created problems, understand the subtle art of ABBA. ABBA was simple and profound. I love ABBA, a daily pill of love and medicine for our hearts so hurt by life!
@MinEgenKanal the prophettess cassandra actually predicted the trojan horse thing but no one believed her because it was part of her curse of telling the future. theres a whole story behind why she got thes gift/ curse and i know ifbut i dont feel like writing it all down
the two women from abba are beautiful ! one is married to a prince of some country and gives alot of her money to charity and the other has moved on to a solo career i wish the group would get back together no one can match the harmony and rythm that the group possessed but many have tried and failed ! lol
@hemicudaboy1 - Hi. Benny Anderson is playing with a group of international musicians [incl. some Brits] these days and has recently done some concerts in the UK. When I first heard The Benny Anderson Band on BBC Radio 2, I was agog, as Benny seems to have gone back to his Swedish folk roots, but picked up other sounds along the way. Find the guys out on the net, they're probably on YouTube too - and you'll hear in the female vocal parts a very familiar sound, only it's NOT Anna & Frida!
This song was intended for a final album, rumoured to be called OPUS 10. Let's hope one day they fix up JUST LIKE THAT and put out an album with these two tracks and everything else that was intended.
in ABBA'S final recording sessions Cassandra recording sessions began in the spring 1982 and so it could have not been impossible to have been released in late 1981.
Schade, dass es ABBA nicht mehr gibt. Diese Gruppe hat mich während meiner ganzen Jugend begleitet. Ich habe die schönsten Erinnerungen an diese Zeit. Ich bin froh, dass ich das alles miterleben durfte.
I love this song. I had it on a compilation CD before I was burgled. It's hard, though, The Day Before You Came, Under Attack and Cassandra were all fantastic songs. All tinged with the sadness that Abba was fading fast. Oh well, tomorrow I'm going to the "Thank You For The Music" concert in London - the nearest thing to an Abba concert in decades... At least I'll see Benny and Bjorn.
I was 14 the first time I heard this song and loved it. I promised myself I'd name my first daughter "Cassandra". And I did. Coincidence or not, she even has blue eyes.
My name is not Cassandra, but this is still a wonderful song and a fantastic performance. Amazing that, even now, so few people are aware of it! It just gets better every time you listen to it. How did they do that?
Cassandra was a Trojan. the younger sister of Hector and Paris. she had the gift of prophecy but no one listened to her warning about the Greek Horse. thus, the fall of Troy... and this song.
At the time this came out there was a bit of confusion it was described by the radio stations as a track from abba's new album which was ABBA the singles, in the end ABBA the singles had The day before you came on it but not Cassandra, the only version I had for 20 years was the vinyl single until I realised they had added it to the visitors which I already had on vinal, ending with an angel passing through my room.
isnt this song based on greek mythology? how appollo fell in love with cassandra and gave her the powerof prophecy, but when she didn't return his love he cursed her so nobody would believe her predictions.
@ElfBunny96 yes it is. i love Greek Mithology since i was a child and i love Abba´s songs too but this is the first time that i hear this particular song, and i was in sock, what a beautiful and poetic way to describe every aspect of the tragedy of Cassandra, im speachles. New Year 2011 Greetings from México. = )
Yes, I kind of agree - but I think that The Day Before You Came is special. To me it is a song that only in the last 10 years have I realised that it is magical.
Having said that, what i would have done if I was the marketing guy at the time. Id have Under Attack on the B side, with I Am The City as an A side.
ABBA... and, specially both women... were a gift from God, to Mankind.

Abba's last recordings are like a ship wreck scattering the treasure chest of gold on the sea bed to be salvaged
And then scatted among different albums

This was the b side of The day before you came , I always thought it should have been the a side
I love it.

Yes, I kind of agree - but I think that The Day Before You Came is special. To me it is a song that only in the last 10 years have I realised that it is magical.
Having said that, what i would have done if I was the marketing guy at the time. Id have Under Attack on the B side, with I Am The City as an A side.
