I'm not very enthusiastic about this Egyptian revolution, in opposition to what I think about the Tunisian revolution. Egypt is a country where more than 80% of the Muslims (I don't have data from the Christians) support death penalty for Muslims who convert to other religions and for those who date outside marriage!

Some Muslim societies are more modernized than others, that's why I think that in Tunisia there is a lot more reason for optimism in the future of democracy there, than there is in Egypt. And muslims did rather well when they had the caliphate. Didnt prevent progression, it enabled it. If anything progression was halted when states were colonised and subsequent autocracies came to power, with the help of, you guessed it, the west.

And it's curious that it was the Arabs that fought against the Ottoman Empire, since it was led by Turks, not Arabs, though both were muslims. So, what Caliphate? Arabs fought the Caliphate!... Would you rather be still under the rule of Turkish Ottomans? I guess you wouldn't like to have an Indonesian Caliph too.

But there is one fault in your argument: It was not the Arabs that in the end defeated the Ottoman Empire, it was the allied forces in the WW1, in which the Ottomans, to put a nail to their coffin, decided to participate along with Germany. It's possible that if the territory of the Ottoman Empire in the Arab lands had continued, you wouldn't have been ruled by a Caliph in the end, but by Ataturk!

@WonkyDoodle The fact is that Ataturk took the power in what was left of the Ottoman Empire, which was not defeated by the allied forces in WW1, not the Arabs. So, he can be considered the successor of the Turkish Caliphs, in a way. As the remnants of the Ottoman Empire got to be ruled by Ataturk, if the Arabs had continued to be under Turkish rule, they would possibly have been ruled by him. There were several future possible scenarios then, that's why I said that it was possible, not certain.

@WonkyDoodle I didn't mean that Ataturk would be a Caliph... he was a successor of the Caliphs, because, in practice, the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire, so, the Turkish Empire, would automatically be the Caliph. As Ataturk was the successor of the Sultans of Turkey, then, if the arab states had continued to be under Turkish control they'd have been ruled by Ataturk. That's what I meant.

So, we can reach the conclusion that the Ottoman Empire collapsed because of the Caliph's decision and, as a consequence, Ataturk came to power. The same war-related change of system happened in Russia where Lenin succeded to the Tsars.
