@Vicsor I agree the whole mandragora and nitro was a dumb mistake the AVGN did actually point out that the camera is a problem and that is a legitimate complaint. At least they fixed that in Legacy of Darkness.

I work on a texture pack for Castlevania 64, hence I'm quite knowledgeable on the subject, hence I'd also appreciate it if the game isn't misrepresented as completely broken by a guy who really should know better. People cry bloody murder all the time over every sentence uttered by the Irate Gamer for Christ's sake, why is it that correcting James ONCE is somehow not done?

Furthermore, a lot of people DO take his reviews at face value plus people genuinely wanted to know how the puzzle was solved. What exactly is your problem with me showing how it is solved? Are you really that sensitive when your master the AVGN gets called out on a mistake?

oh, and also, what bugged me even MORE was the part about the music. from the REVIEW ITSELF it's plain to see he's lying, or call it whatever you want, trying to be funny. "the music sucks....there is no music...". okay, first of all that contradicts itself, it's one or the other. secondly, the intro to the game (in the review!) features a gorgeous violin rendition of "divine bloodlines". there is CLEARLY music in the game, and it IS good. just dishonest. frankly, james, not your best work.

@Vicsor indeed. i will have to check this game out sometime. i'm a fan of the castlevania series, and never played either 64 game. i admit the 64 generation is difficult to go back to in this day and age of pristine graphics (harder actually than the nes or snes), but i'm a retrogamer and i'd like to give these games their fair chance. from what i've heard from you and others, legacy of darkness is the one to try? essentially the "director's cut" of cv64?

first of all, i LOVE the avgn. i think his reviews are hilarious. that said, he has said a fair amount of things i don't agree with. as for this review, though i greatly enjoyed the super nintendo half, the 64 part bugged me. i don't even know this game, never played it, but even i could tell something was fishy about his review. OBVIOUSLY a game that was as unfinished and impossible to complete as he made it out to be would not have been released. not by konami and nintendo.

Good job with the Nitro run! Easily the most challenging section of the game. Eventually I played the game so often that I was able to complete it with both characters on the hard setting. I know it isn't a flawless video game, but I really enjoyed it.

I've checked out your blog. So, Legacy of Darkness is a finished version of Castlevania for the N64? So basically, if one is to try out one of them, then Legacy of Darkness would be the preferred choice, correct?

Basically, yes. Although Legacy of Darkness puts more focus on the new character Cornell. You have to finish the game with both new characters before the characters and storylines from the first game are unlocked.

i'm a fan of avgn over ig for the same reasons as many, but to see him make such a critical error is kinda unsettling...

I'm not a hater, I'm a fan of the guy. Just not a blind one. He makes so many mistakes in his Castlevania 'tribute' series that it's hard to swallow he's a fan of the series. Also, don't put so much emphasis on "NEVER lies" because he obviously lies when he says there's no music.

How is the description wrong? Well Dawn of Sorrow totally isn't about Dracula's castle appearing from a solar eclipse in Japan. It's about a woman trying to create a new Dark Lord (the main character IS a reborn Dracula) and takes place in a different castle from Dracula's.

Games back then suffered alot from the fact that programmers handelt em like arcade games,no Lifbars ,no Help/explanations,only few Continues etc....they where designed to eat Coins in an arcade.And that made games sometimes hard as hell. Besides of Glitches or stuff like that,thats another story. :)

The review is NOT supoosed to review of the game in its eintirely.

ALL AVGN Videos are made from the Point of View from his Childhood,how he Expirienced those Games.

And as a kid some of that stuff is Hard to Figure out,no Inet or so back then only Nintendo Power or other Magazine u had to Buy.

I can remember some of his expirence that i had myself.

Even if he does it "from his experience", I don't think that justifies him lying about flaws in the game. Especially not when he's doing the review as a tribute to the series.

He's doing unneeded damage to the reputation of this game, which indirectly sucks for me because ever since that review I've had to deal with several comments on how the game I'm retexturing sucks, despite many of those people never even having played it.

And even if he didn't know about this particular thing, that doesn't excuse him from lying about the music, the fact that you can simply restart the stage and not the entire game, not even trying to actually use the camera, the fact that Legacy of Darkness was the director's cut and not just "similar".
