Every time i watch this, I wish that they would make an entire film based on this with a soundtrack by them!

note in the beginning a woman who appears to be dying - this is probably the man's wife and girl's mother. the atmosphere is very bleak and suggests a not-so-sturdy relationship between the dad daughter. the mother, seeing this, sends the deer. the deer is a tool designed to bring the father and daughter closer together -- notice the evident cheerfulness and love they show for one another. notice the scene w/ the kite - te daughter is distracted and, in turn, away from her father.. I saw Mum in Seattle a little after the release of this album and they finale'd with this song. The entire show was amazing, but the performance of this song in particular was good enough to make you feel like there is no evil in this world. Between the giant sing-along cue cards and the innocent, angelic presence of the members; it was the most beautiful night of my life and I wish I could return to it in my dreams every night.

Perhaps the deer represents any material item, and the video is a commentary about consumerism in society? Material desires look like a gift from the heavens to our naive protagonists, provide some initial enjoyment, but then turn into an obsession and ultimately are responsible for the tragic end of the balance between man and nature.

Looking at other peoples comments about the meaning of the video makes me love this video even more, I found it just so visually amazing before, but the meaning is even more wonderful to me. I also for a bit thought maybe the deer is a symbol of the day the mother dies, like how people cling onto the memory of the death rather than the happy memories of the person you loved. They had to let go of the memory of that death and hold on to the memory of the mother's life to finally be happy.

The dad gets sick, she hits him because now he is leaving her too. Oh my god I get it. The mom dies and they get sent a deer which symbolizes the mom because they can't let her go; however, it's also something they don't want,because they abuse. Deep down I think they're mad at the mom for leaving them. When they're playing patty cake in the shed the dad is wearing a mask to represent how they're putting on a show.
