  • Thanks so much for uploading this! I saw Juvel many times in WA. He had a marvelous temperament.

  • I would never call a horse capable of Grand Prix moments 'green' but none the less, a spectacular video. Watching Robert Dover work, is watching art in motion.

  • @TheDesertDenizen

I would. In this and other disciplines, e.g., showjumping. There's a big difference between say a 7yr-old stepping into an FEI level class for the first time, and essentially needing the full attention of an experienced rider... versus a veteran campaigner, twice that age, acting as say a schoolmaster for a rider who's doing his/her first grand prix. I'd definitely call the former green.

  • thanks for posting! I remember watching this at the WIHS, and it brought tears to my eyes then, and I always talk about it, fantastic to see it again!

  • @MeggyPoney

i dont think it is an very beautiful ride, the horse dont even use his hindlegs, i dont think he is ready to compete in that level.... I am from denmark, and here that kind of riding wouldnt be accepted.... it is not very well ridden...

in the extended trot witch you think is so spetacular the ho´rse still doesnt use his hindlegs, thats very important in an extended trot...

  • @kristinapigen

...the horse was very green at the time, as mentioned clearly; and he was ridden by one of the most accomplished Dressage riders in the country. In light of both, I'd say your armchair-criticism is just a weeeee bit over the top.

  • WOW that truely is spectacular! xx

  • @readmerrilee

"We" *could've* enjoyed it, because we knew what was going on. However, this was shown on network TV: where the overwhelming majority of the audience would've seen a horse just prancing around, and nothing more. They were there for that very reason.

  • THANK YOU for sharing! I have always remembered this ride when I saw it live! I Had no idea it was back in 1988! WOW This ride was engraved in my memory and I always hoped to see it again! thanks for making it possible!

  • @Sboudrie

    Welcome.

I too remember it from back then... 22yrs flies, doesn't it? ;)

  • The only thing wrong with it is the comentators talking. Other than that the horse is beautiful

  • @WMcClanah

Do realize that this was on network TV, and thus the overwhelming majority of the audience would have no clue what they were looking at (other than just a horse "prancing around"), hence the point of bringing on a professional to commentate in the first place.

  • This was so beautiful, i didn't want it to stop. Shivers all the way through. Thank you so much for posting.

  • @onegoldfish

    Welcome.

  • Absolutely AWESOME!

  • this is the greatest dressage performance ever!!!!!!! my parents have talked about since I was little. I was 2 when this was done!

  • @hannahalexismommy

While it's definitely a nice one... it certainly doesn't compare to, say:

    1) Salinero's performance at the 2006 World Equestrian Games

    2) Gigolo's performance at the 1998 World Equestrian Games

    3) Just about any performance from Rembrandt or Totilas!

  • This little video is beautiful!

  • just one word to say: amazing ^_^

  • WOW! this is great, fantastic to see a dressage rider actually riding in a natural outline as rollkur/ hyperflexion is seen far to much today,,, this is just inspirational! great video :)

  • All these phenominally difficult movements look so easy for this horse!!

  • @jmdnarri

    ...and he's just a greenie ;)

  • OMG I WOULD KILL FOR THAT SEAT

  • I have this performance on video and it still brings smiles and tears to the eyes each time I see it. I have no problem with the commentary because the majority of the public has no clue as to what is going on. I just wish the video had gone on for a few more seconds (as the video did) which shows Mr. Drover performing the moves, riding one handed while donning his hat in tribute to his horse. Thanks for posting this fabulous ride.

  • @Atilando

    Welcome. :)

  • brill

  • Brilliant but i wish the woman would shut up so i can actually hear the music lol

  • ...keep in mind that this was broadcast on general television and aimed at an audience that wouldn't necessarily be familiar with any aspect of Dressage.

  • Doesn't matter, the biggest complaint in the winter Olympics right now is with the figure skating, the commentators wouldn't shut up, so now they don't talk till after the performance and they point out the different movements and the flaws during the replays. Dressage needs to follow suit.

  • @spirittammyk

What on Earth are you talking about? I'm seeing figure skating commentators yap through entire performances as I write this. That, and ~what~ dressage commentators?

  • At the beginning of the Olympics, the commentators yapped too much during the men's and pairs figure skating. After there were lots of complaints from the tv viewers, NBC lassoed the commentators to severely limit their talking till after the program is finished. This happened in the past with Dick Button, and now it's happening with Scott Hamilton. As for the dressage commentators, just look at your video, the woman doesn't shut the fuck up, and it's distracting.

  • You missed the (rhetorical) point of the last question... read it again, with that in mind.

  • Humor me. What do you not understand that people do not want to hear yapping during a spectator performance when watching it on TV?

  • Are you dim, or just ~willfully~ oblivious?

If you had the mental capacity to think outside of your own perspective for a second: you'd realize that the expectation for the general USA public would be to take one look at this, see some horse prancing around, and have no idea the intricacy of the movements, what it takes to perfect them, etc

Ultimately, it doesn't matter what you can or cannot grasp; at least the networks realize it, which is why they aired the commentary in the first place

  • Wow, the only one who is dim around here is you. Keep it up with your swarmy remarks, and I'll have this video reported for using unauthorized copyrighted content. If you can't grasp that the USA public does not need to be spoon fed the intricacies of dressage, (much like figure skating, they watch the shows, and if they want to know more, they research the details later) then that's your narrow minded view.

  • LOL, have at it.

Got a question for ya Sparky:

did you ever stop to THINK, that there might be a *reason* why not a single one of my videos has ever been taken down, and why I'm even allowed to earn revenue on the ad-linked ones, despite this site's clear policy against doing so on material to which you hold no TANGIBLE authority to use? Or did you believe it's just pure luck. LOL

Nah, 'cause if you did, you wouldn't have just made a fool out of yourself with a such a fruitless threat.

  • DAMN YOU JUST GOT PWNED.

  • The best indeed

  • Breathtaking.......

  • just gorgeous, just completely gorgeous.

  • I would really love to see this horse/rider combo in a few years again.

They are lovely now but there is room for improvment in the elevation and suspension at the Piaffe. I think also that this lovely dark horse would look more dramatic against a light background.

I hope to see more of them.

  • ...you ~do~ realize that this video is 21yrs old, right? ;)

  • Yes, but there should be more vid somewhere.

I would like to see the progression.

    I enjoy seeing that maturation.

You may not enjoy western riding but to watch a young rider like Monte Foreman then in his senior years..Interesting and thought provoking.

I am thinking a search might be fruitful.

    Perhaps the horses name?

It will have to wait for tomorrow.

  • "Perhaps the horses name?"

...read the info box, that's what it's there for.

  • I have this on VHS also, brings tears to my eyes. There was an intro that was ~1min when they first entered the arena, and he rode with only 1 hand on the reins. Simply amazing. Thank you so much for posting this for the world to see!

  • I cut the intro out of this because the television broadcast came to air in the middle of it, so seemed like something was missing.

Was really fun to see though, and he does do it again very briefly at the very end of this one.

  • Saw him perform this at WIHS - gave me goosebumps then and gives me goosebumps now.

Uber was anderes video sprechen sie?

  • die videoantwort von hypernationdk, -->Andreas Helgstrand - Hingstekåring 2007

  • Ah, okay.

  • HUGE RD fan here. 4 gold medals, what can you say. VERY disappointed to hear that he was swindled out of 4 mil by Joey Zada.

  • Not familiar witht hat story, please explain.

  • on his website doversworld (google it to go there) he blogs about it.

  • Like others have said I've been wanting to see this vid again for a long time! It just gives me goose bumps everytime I see it,

  • Thank you very much for posting this! I've been looking for it for what seems like the full 20 years. It's beautiful, and I remembered the outstanding stallion.

    Thank you, again.

  • Very welcome :)

  • Not only is this an amazing performance, but the commentary is great, if we had more annoucers like her maybe dressage would become more mainstream!

  • Agreed...

  • I thought this was just beautiful, so classical. I am looking for ideas for my friend's Arabian Stallion TAEZ's Grand Prix Freestyle retirement ceremony....piaffe pirouette to a canter pirouette...amazing. check him out on youtube, look up TAEZ Arabian stallion doing Grand Prix

  • Thank you kindly for posting this! I've been wanting to watch it again for years and couldn't find it.

  • No prob, very welcome ;)

  • Thank you so much for posting this. I've been looking off and on for this performance for a few years now. When I saw this 20 years ago, I thought it was the most fantastic performace ever.

  • ...welcome.

Based on your screen names, I'm guessing you've already seen my Gem Twist vids? ;)

  • He sure is the best! I may even get the honor of riding with him at the Cinncinnati Traditions Exhibition with him. It'll be terriffic! If I get in....

  • wow. that was incredible! what a beautiful pair...this is truly what I imagine when I hear 'dressage.'

  • ...well said

  • This video inspired the beginning of my career with dressage-I watched this every day for a year!!! I even performed a high school graduation freestyle to this music and was able to do a lot of the upper level movements. What's even better I ran into Robert Dover at a show once and was able to tell him how he inspired me!

  • Not only that, but I'm sure everyone would like to know that it was your website that inspired me to dig this one out, digitize it, and upload it ;)

  • We did not forget. Its just like having your music teacher explain vibratto while watching Pavarotti sing Othello....not now.

  • Thanks for this..I aslo have it somewhere on vid. I just wish Gretdhen would not have talked so much...."this is the PASSSADGE..."

  • I think a lot of you seem to be forgetting that the intended audience here is one that knows nothing about dressage, hence the commentary in the first place....

  • I have this on VHS. Recorded from the actual show. Very cool.. Thank you for posting online.

  • that was beautiful.

  • I remember watching this in 1988!! Thanks for posting this, what memories this brought back. Beautiful ride.

  • Welcome ;)

  • WOW

  • beautiful

  • It definitely was Juvel. I have still a snippet of that ride on Juvel's stallion video.

  • ...and apparently, he's STILL around and going strong. Awesome!

  • Oh, my, yes! Used to have this on video but lost it years ago and have been hoping to find it again. Thank you SO MUCH for posting it. The horse is the stallion, Juvel, and this was a wonderful exhibition ride with moving music.

  • You're very welcome.

There seems to be plenty of debate as to who this stallion actually is, but Juvel also seems to be the name settled upon over at the Chronicle forums... so, guess we'll go with that ;)

  • who is this horse? i bet he went on to do some amazing things =)

  • thats amazing!

  • thanks for posting this...had it on video and lost it. the most breathtaking performance. i have been looking for this for several years.

  • Beautiful! I love to watch old performances!

  • wow ive never actually seen robert dover ride...thanks for posting this it was amazing!

    :]

  • Ah...... the Glory of Dressage ! Equine Ballet.... no actually a Pas de Deux between Rider and Horse.

  • Randomly happened to Google this, and was ASTONISHED to find out how many people remember this particular ride.

So for those who may not have seen it for a while, enjoy! :)
