  • Because Anatomy and Physiology is hard as hell.

    Too difficult.

  • @CLjuc87 cont.. The only two that finished successfully was myself and one of my friends. People need to remember, nursing is not easy and only the strong and dedicated individuals will last. Another one of my friends also went to community college for nursing and could not handle it, and then transferred into a 4 year nursing program and finished. So I cringe at the people that thik an associate degree nurse is any less than as BS nurse because there are absolutely wrong!

  • @CLjuc87 I have been an RN for over 20 years, and I can honestly say that you are 100% right. People believe that nurses with a BS in nursing are smarter, more educated or secure better jobs in nursing. I have actually found that a nurse with an Associate degree in nursing is better prepared for the NCLEX because the exams and tests in this type of program are set up exactly the same as the NCLEX exam. When I first stared nursing school, it was me, three of my best friends, and my sister.

  • There's a lot of reasons why we have a shortage of nurses. One of them is starting to be an aging nursing population, about 1/7 of the nurses at my facility are 60+ and most plan on retiring within the next decade. It's an extremely hard and very competitive field. I really really wish, sometimes, that I had gone into linguistics when I had the chance. Now I have student loans to pay back.

  • There are more nursing schools than hospitals. They are like McDonald's there is one every ten miles you drive.

  • I am a newly qualified nurse and have found it exceptionally hard to find employment in hospitals as my trust aren't offering positions for newly qualifieds. I agree totally with hippopcrazy it's a vicious circle as if nobody gives you a chance of a job how can nurses get the experience all emplyers want. There are plenty of agencies but they want experience 2.

  • I don't understand why everyone is pushing for BSN and MS in nursing. If all the nurses go back to school... who will be taking care of the patients on the floors? If I went to school for my MS I want to get payed more and have a supervisory position. I wouldn't be working on the floor for the same salary as an Associate RN. And an RN is an RN whether AS or BS. People need to realize that. You take ONE Board, the NCLEX. I can't stand listening to professor's saying go back to school.

  • @fukkoutahere I am a 2009 BSN grad. People who graduated from my program in 2008 or earlier had job offers and sign on bonuses months prior to graduation.

  • @magickunderpants how much did they start u off with, an hour?

  • @81kiema I have not been offered a position as an RN yet. The lowest hourly rate where I am at is 21 dollars. People who graduated a year before I did had sign on bonuses of 4-10 thousand right out of school. No sign on bonuses any more.

  • Every time I hear there is a nurse shortage I feel like kicking in the TV or computer. I graduated in 2009 BSN good grades got scholarships and my own Universities hospital system will not hire me. I am a male nurse and I know I being discriminated over this.I can not get a job

  • I was going to be a nurse until I learned that you have to have experience in order to get a job, it costs a fortune and the drop out rage is HUGE >< I guess all you can do is hope to get moved up at some minimum wage job.

  • To those responding to me: Life isn't perfect - getting into nursing isn't perfect either - but the first year of baby boomers just turned 65 and increased nursing demand will follow. I wish you the best in whatever career you choose. You will have to work pool for a while to get experience on your resume - that's the way it is when you first graduate from any degree. This book is how to become a Registered Nurse without sitting on waiting lists: "Get Your RN Faster" on amazon in March.

  • @fukkoutahere Re: video: People living longer but most baby boomers who have lost jobs have lost insurance. Many hospital units are 50% empty. Getting older doesnt mean shit. They are not flooding hospitals as they are putting off admission until they are on deaths door because of no job/no income/no insurance and fear of having their home seized to pay hosp bills. I am a baby boomer (and an RN) and I have not been able to see a doctor since 2008 when I quit my last job to go to nursing school.

  • @maximilian333 - there are No shortcuts - just a different ways to approach things (which may be faster for some and also less expensive overall). The current economy is a blip and may extend another year, however, it's important to note that this year, 2011, is the first year the baby boomers are truning 65. This fact will dramatically change everything - not just medical and nursing.

  • @joyhelpsnurses Just remember that alot of boomers have lost jobs, insurance, etc and no one wants to hire them because of their age. With the govt fixing to cut entitlements (M'care, M'caid and Social Security), this situation will be even worse. And this current economy is far from a "blip". Do you really think the economy will "turn"? With all the high state and Fed debt, people having used up their 401 K's to stay alive after layoffs? Just how do you think it will "turn"? Sheesh!!

  • There is no nursing shortage. There are tons of sick people who want healthcare but can't afford the nurses, yes ("real" shortage), but there is no money for that.

There IS a shortage of open positions for nurses. Do not quit your old job if you go to nursing school.

  • Hot Nurse!

  • @yingdiskette Uh, no retard but I guess you don't know which road one must take to be admitted to the CRNA program, No I don't think I'll like nursing but I know what i do like after im' done with that chapter.

And do i have a crush on this person? No actually I'm happily married to my HUSBAND...

btw manti's are great... you should try 'em

  • Great video and explanation... this is why I wrote the book: "Get Your RN Faster" to help people bypass RN School Waiting Lists. NOTE to some posts on here: Anyone who just graduates for any profession will have a tough time getting their first job because of the "experience" issue. Just be open to working pool positions as a nurse for a while and you'll get on track to a permanent job in no time. Nurses are really needed so it will work out! Keep going! :)

  • @joyhelpsnurses nobody is even getting hired into "pool positions". Are you really telling people to pay high tuition around $50 so they can end up in debt? You can't take shortcuts to RN training. Thank god I didn't borrow money.

  • Just realized 2 things by watching this video. This Nurse has 2 matted hair locks which look gross, and also her logic of the Nursing shortage was and is unfounded. The reason is because many Universities impose a ridiculous strict process just to get into the Nursing program, and because many RN's and LPN's are not being represented.

  • @yingdiskette at least she's doing something productive, giving out details and trying to help others understand. What are you doing, besides talking out of your asshole?

  • @MissDJ Are you retarded? Did you read my comment properly? Hey, besides your making Manti video and your make up ones, could you please favor a video where it instructs you to learn how to read a message? I am for nurses, but you apparently are for the looks of this particular person. You're very shallow, not to mention repulse individual. Now go on and make a Manti.

  • @yingdiskette so you got an issue w/me because i'm into make up and i like cooking and I'M INTERESTED IN NURSING? at least i can say i seek multiple talents.... once again- is there anything productive you do besides talking out of your ass? you don't have to answer my question, you being an idiot tells me everything.

  • @yingdiskette actually they are producing too many nurses. Nursing schools are a business and they want customers. There are simply not enough positions for all of the graduates. The hospital execs love it this way, overabundance of anything pushes down their price/wage and they can hire only the cream of the crop. Nursing is not "wide open" at least not anymore.

  • @maximilian333 You are correct. Thanks for the reply.

  • I'm an RN and 25-year veteran of hospital nursing, spent a year looking for work, the hospitals in our area are laying off nurses, now in a doctor's office and loving it. Nursing is a calling, if you don't have the passion, don't do it. Over worked, underpaid and disrespect are the name of the game, not to mention long hours, mandatory overtime, working holidays, very little vacation, and bacteria that don't respond to antibiotics. Glad I'm outta' there!

  • There is NO shortage of new grad nurses and NO shortage of floor nurses. Maybe administrators, teachers and APRN shortages. hospitals and nursing homes are getting paid less= cut staff. Nursing is a calling If you want it bad enough you will get through nursing school. It will be just as hard to find a job as nursing school was

  • I am impressed by the information given in so little time!

Katie! wonderful demeanor, perfect for the job!

  • The reason there is a shortage is because a nurse works hard and it is stressful...and we are NOT appreciated!!

  • does she have a dreadlock?

  • @savannahjduncan looks like it

  • I'm currently in the U.S Army Full Active Duty for 3 years, after that I will come home to pursue in ADN and RN and reenlist in the U.S Army Reserve to get all my benefits. The Army pays for RN to BSN online school, yipeee. I'm loving it. After get my RN, 1 year in ICU, I will become Anesthetist Nurse. I love the opportunity.

  • im so sick of the "baby boomers"

  • Don't forget about nursing schools only admitting a few students at a time. A school can have 200 well qualified applicants but can only accomodate 40 for each school year. The main reason for that is because there are not a lot of nursing educators because of the drastic pay cut they'll have to take compared to working in the hospital.

  • There's a lot of RNs out there but they do not have the expirience yet that the hospital needs...especially in this economy that hospitals are saving money in trainings and New Grads Programs (that is 2 yrs program I think) and that employers prefer those who has expirience even at least a year. ICU and ER Nurses are in demand still.

  • theres shoratage of qualified nurses in the country..

  • how did u say so?

  • the country cant just employ anybody in the country just to fill the shortage.. they need to employ the qualified ones.

  • i see..... but is recession still there?

  • yah thats one of the reason aswell..

  • i was looking for a job in Chicago and im from Texas does anyone know why they only hire nurses who have gotten their license in illinois?

  • @yasbyeyeLashgirl your Texas license has agreements with many states (compact states) but Illinois is not one of these. You need to apply for an endorsement to your license for Illinois so you can apply for jobs there.

You also may need to take a course on IL's Nurse Practice Act or something like that (maybe).

  • Nursing schools are churning out nurses by the boatload. The hospitals love it, when nurses quit they can quickly be replaced by the next fool...high turnover keeps salaries low. These hospitals even have contracts with nursing schools...it's a big racket.

  • A hospital is a FIRM before anything else...and the majority of there revenue is generated from Insurance providers and individuals. The insurance industry is in trouble like many other financial institutions. Therefore

Insurance companies - profits decrease, less coverage

Individuals - Incomes decrease, debt increases

Hospitals - Profits decrease, salaries/hiring decrease

    Nurses - No shortage

As for the whole baby boomers idea....we live in a capitalist society...nobody works for free.

  • This was a weird little video. I'd put money on this woman not even being a nurse. There is no real shortage of nurses. People are NOT living longer, they Were, but not anymore. Hospitals are trying to be more efficient and use less nurses.

  • Make more money doing something else? Nurses are one of the best paid jobs unless you`re aiming for 6 figure or millionaire status. I always hear nurses complain about pay but compared to most other jobs they are paid VERY well.

  • Ppl are living longer and have a better quality of life? then why do they need to be in a hospital? So they can live longer so they can stay in the hospital more so they can live longer...etc doesn't make any sense.

  • well speaking now, because of the recession. There is no shortage of nurses. All the new graduates are facing a tough market of getting a job. A sad situation since many of them have loans to pay back

  • yeah you right.......

  • @hippopcrazy sooo true!!! hospitals want RN's w/ experience. new grads arent getting hired bcuz they have no experience that hospitals want. Yet how are we supposed to get this experience if no one hires us and gives us a chance?

  • @Juby2kewl I"m wondering (and hope) you've found work? I"m asking only because I plan on going to nursing school (ECC), but I'm worrying about the job prospects.

  • @phoenixbyrd2 you are right if you are worried. Don't get distracted by school- every day on the floor is a job interview and you need to make friends and collect contact info on every single nurse you can. Also save money and be ready for the possibility of long-term unemployment or even the need to change to another career.

  • @Juby2kewl I have an even crazier thing! I grad in May 2010 with RN BSN and 3.5 GPA, never failed a course, never left back. I applied to a local hospital and who gets hired? One of my colleagues who had to repeat a nursing course and grad 6 months late, with lower GPA. I was never even called for an interview. And why? Because she had been working there as a nurses aide. I work in home care, one pt per week and make less than $200 per week as an RN, BSN. Can find nothing else.

  • @Tankweti Same boat here. I am in a FNP program because I can not find a job. I think it is ridiculous that since someone worked a few weeks or a few months as a PCA they get hired.
