Despite being theistic I highly enjoy your videos. You're not out here trying to incite any anger, just stating your opinion. I enjoy listening to opinions so it's a welcome relief from the pure hate videos that just leave me with a bad taste in my mouth. In regards to this video, it makes sense. If we're arguing over what food is best and end up discussing the meanings of vegetarianism, vegan-ism etc then our previous discussion really isn't moving forward now is it?
The meanings of words matters. Semantic discussions can be where all the heavy work is done... I hate BionicDance for pooping on me and also for making semantics such a graveyard.
@WorthlessLoser8 For communication purposes, I agree. All I'm saying is that arguing over what words "mean" is fruitless because it's based on a misunderstanding of how language fundamentally works. The discussions over what you're trying to do don't fit that description because you realise that property of language and you're actively trying to get a meaning changed. BD and her opponents are just arguing over how people choose to label themselves.
Right on. We are in the same camp. I don't watch BionicDance anymore. I fear her head will roll right off her shoulders after a poorly executed jumpcut and head turn. XD
I'm new subscriber to you and quite impressed. Have you heard of the YouTube user "NCrowsY"?
All I can say is this guys is a complete douche and needs to be put in his place. Thanks Orygyn you're awesome. Oh his video was at the top ------------------------>
@Russell192Talks Thanks Russell, much appreciated. To be honest there's too many alarm bells about that video that just scream "poe". I don't do pwnage much anyway but if I even suspect someone of being a poe there's no chance. It would take more than a few comments to explain why but maybe there's a topic for a video in there. Either way, thanks for letting me know about this.
It is precisely because definitions change that I LOVE discussions about semantics. Why do definitions change? It's because people misuse words. Sometimes people think they know the meaning of a word and use it as such. Take the word "ironic," for example. We can blame Alanis Morissette for the bastardization and destruction of the meaning of this very useful word. Why bother having definitions if people are only going to use the word for "what it means to them?" Just a thought.
I don't really know what I would call myself. I believe that there is some sort of being or "God(s)". I believe that anyone or any group claiming to know what god is or wants must be false. I also acknowledge that I may be wrong and that it is quite likely that atheists are right.
great vid...I don't believe in god......that's it. I have absolutely no interest in how you choose to describe me...or what those words mean etymologically or philologically, or even what they mean to you unless it impinge on my life.
Ignostic, Agnostic, Atheist, Apatheist, Heretic, Devil Worshipper, Apostate or whatever. I still don't believe in god and that is all.
I thought BD's definition would have been very useful at the beginning of a conversation as a proposal for how the words might be used. What doesn't really work, imho, is to retroactively critique someone's use of words (in this case Zomgits) based on a definition that has not been mutually agreed upon, regardless of how sensible it might be.
i accept the fact that my POV gets labelled 'atheist' but its not a word i invest any of mySelf in, and i'm fine with being labelled thus, even though i do so knowing how much baggage some will attach to the word.
all the terms have their own set of baggage, and i really agree with you here that while definitions matter, its not necessarily the pertinent point for some folks, depending on how they ascribe the words themselves.
Then again, if a person is agnostic, they're making a statement about their theistic beliefs. This is where I agree with OMGitsChris. A person who doesn't know whether or not a god or gods exist has no reason to choose one side.
@AgentKuo but that simply doesnt happen. its not possible for a brain to be completely neutral on an issue.
if someone doesnt know whether or not they believe in a god, they have somehow managed to bypass a process that everyone goes through with every single claim they have ever heard of.
chances are they know theyre an atheist/theist and are just being a pussy.
It most certainly is. Just because you can't comprehend how someone could be neutral on the issue, doesn't mean it isn't possible. It's not that they don't know whether or not they believe, it's that they have made the decision not to believe either. It may be hard to understand because it's not the norm or not common, but it's definitely possible. They're not being a pussy about it at all. Saying that just further shows your ignorance.
@AgentKuo "Just because you can't comprehend how someone could be neutral on the issue, doesn't mean it isn't possible."
well, at no point did i say anything like "i cannot comprehend how, therefore it isnt possible.
so that was quite a redundant statement.
"it's that they have made the decision not to believe either."
the brain doesnt work like that im afraid. whether they like it or disclose it or not, their brain almost instantly deteremined the plausibility of the claim.
@AgentKuo and even if this ridiculous notion was true (that people could be exactly 50/50 or 0), i could simply disclose a small and trivial piece of information and they would instantly shift away from their position of complete neutrality.
but seeing as they havent been living in an information vacuum their entire lives, they obviously ARE NOT 50/50 or 0 and are in all likelihood just BEING A PUSSY and refusing to publically commit.
Th way I look at it, atheism is a conscious choice to not believe in a god(s). Theism is a conscious choice to believe in a god.
I agree about agnosticism and atheism. So is there a word that would mean someone who chooses not to believe that there is or is not a god? (which is commonly what people mistake agnosticism for) Because people can consciously choose not to believe in theism or atheism. And right now, they're incorrectly calling it agnosticism.
I think what people don't seem to take into account is, the basis of atheism and theism is knowledge (or what's knowable), which is the same for agnosticism. For instance, the basis for me being an atheist is my knowledge of the world around me, of evolution and of theistic beliefs. The way I see it, agnosticism is the same. It's the conclusion some people come to about god based on the knowledge they have.
In the simplest way, no one can know whether or not god exists. It's always going to be a conscious decision to either believe or not believe. The only way we can come to the conclusion that a god doesn't exist is through the knowledge we have about god. Knowledge we gain through experience, research, and information. This is how we come to any conclusion. Agnosticism is simply the choice to not choose one or the other, but to be content that it is unknowable.
Despite being theistic I highly enjoy your videos. You're not out here trying to incite any anger, just stating your opinion. I enjoy listening to opinions so it's a welcome relief from the pure hate videos that just leave me with a bad taste in my mouth. In regards to this video, it makes sense. @Orygyn Response A) I think the OED would have a lot to say about it. Response B) Thanks to Alanis, now it can. ;-P

Slightly Irrelevant: I often tell people I am good with semantics but bad with phonetics. Naturally I slip up while I'm saying it.
