(Spoilers from here incase you ever plan on the game.) He was apprentice to Kreia during their time on Malachor. Traya/Kreia taught Nihilus quite a bit, including helping him increase his ability to use the Force to feed on others (Force Drain). His Force ability got to a strong enough level that it was able to drain (continue)

Kreia, on multiple occasions said that Revan never went to fight the Sith Empire, and instead went on a more metaphysical journey. Yes Lucas only directed the movies, but he oversaw a great deal of the extended universe material as well. George Lucas decides what is canon and what isn't, not you or menknurian, or any of us. If you did even a little research, then this wouldn't be an issue. Some shit is canon, some isn't. But Kotor is in fact canon.
