I slave for a wage in central England. And when I am given the freedom to go for several days on my motorcycle,I do not head for some sunny clime, I head always to Skye and beyond. It is my spiritual home, because when I am there I feel like I have come home to my ancestral root.
YOU CAN FEEL IT IN YOUR HEART, REALLY!!
I say to everyone, check if you can feel the same. If you do, you may be another such as myself who has a historic link, but is an economic deportee from that wonderful land.
Wonderful video, so simple but so... - and I love this song... Shooting from the bike is a great touch - travelling the road, like going home.
I used to be a massive Runrig fan and just this hour had a revival on Grooveshark. They inspired me visit Skye in my late teens and I yearn to return there now. It's a beautiful, breathtaking, spiritual place.
What wouldn't I give to grow old in a place like this?!
I had tears in my eyes while enjoying the beauty of this isle for the first time. No other place I've been before ever caused this. Have been there a few weeks ago for the 5th time and I'm still amazed.
Btw: Flower of the West is a song about North Uist.
@nikl1411 I remember listening to FOTW and following the walk described towards the end of the song on a map. Took a drive around N Uist when I was there - gorgeous, elemental place.
i had the fortune of going to university in scotland and after four years spent in its mountains i have become haunted by her beauty :) although i live in london now, not a day goes by without my mind drifting back to the highlands... i'm sure to return one day. possibly for good!
Oh My God:) this was such a beautiful journey :) I took the same journey about 4 weeks ago a dear friend of mine was my guide through the Highlands of Bonnie Scotland and there are not enough words to describe the magic within each moment being there. From the moment I landed in Scotland I felt truly at home. And being in the Highlands where ma wee heart and soul has always belonged only confirmed everything it is my own personal heaven on earth and I know one day it will be my forever home:).xx
Hi kingdomofdalriada :) Thanks 4 kind comment and I say kind because someone like your self with such a small ignorant mind to call someone a wannabe because they have a passion 4 a country that speaks volume to there heart tells me a lot about you as a person and how you treat others:)..In saying this maybe before sit on high horse and judge others look within your self because am sure the only reason u can make your nasty comments is because what is within is not so nice after all:).Cheers:)
celticlass thats a bit over dramatic, my comments are not Q"nasty" it is mere observations on the sheer huge number of wannabe scots over in usa and canada.
My reply to you was because I felt like you were attacking me by calling me a wannabe and I honestly respect everyone for there opinion whatever it may be but when it comes to things to close to my heart well lets just say you hit really hard with your words to be honest..I am not of Scottish blood my dad is from Ireland but none the less I have always loved Scotland her Highlands with all my heart and the culture due to growing up hearing stories so I carry her deep within my heart on me:).
@celticlass32 Never mind those that have a go because you were not born in Scotland. I was and I swell with pride when people such as yourself speak so highly of my native land. Keep on visiting and having fun and thanks again for your kind words and love of Scotland :-)
Thank you for your kind reply :) and it matters not what others think for they are just words:)I truly believe and know deep within am better and my unconditional love & appreciation for a beautiful land and its people, culture is mine alone and how I feel towards it,is mine alone for it brings me such joy and pleasure, happiness within for no one can take that away from me.Others say what they do because they don't have a passion for they don't know what it is to truly feel something deep within.
I was in the Isle of Skye just last week (ealry Nov 2008) and I found it a fantastic place. Such dramatic scenery, friendly people and the weatehr was dramatic too, cloudy, sunny intervals and a storm hit as I was leaving the island.
I managed to bag some fantastic photographs though. Thanks to Scotland for some happy times.
Don't talk nonsense ;-) I toured Scotland in July, and out of 16 days we had 12 days of blue sky and bright sunshine, especially on the Isle of Skye!
@nikl1411: How did you record this video? Did you use a helmet camera? *g* It was on the road between Kyleakin and Portree, right? I even noticed one of the blue Macbackpackers buses :D
yeah ive got to agree with there. weve been to isle of skye 3 times over the last two years for two weeks each time and we had around 2 days of bad weather everytime weve been. even in the bad days skye still looks even more dramatic. i love the place.
The weather was fantastic on Skye. Will never forget the scenery.
As to the recording I modified the map case of my tank bag for my handycam. It's quite useful as it minimizes the vibrations of my Twin (CB500) and the rain isn't a problem at all. :-)
By the way the video is showing several roads of Skye.
First bit is going up Drum na Cloich, next bit is between Sligachan and Portree, after that it's the twisties at Drynoch coming down towards Carbost - I bet you loved Crossal Straight, I notice you cut that out - followed by Crossal to just before Sligachan (Marsco in the background), back down Drum na Cloich and then the last bit is going down to the ferry at Ardvasar. Am I right?
It's a nice clear straight spot but you need to watch out for lorries leaving the garage half-way along it! You know how you need to open the taps a bit to clean the soot out of the exhausts...
@gordonjcp Right on the button. Ferry at Armadale (OK half a mile from Ardvasar). I drive some of these roads more or less daily, but still watched with pleasure. I listened to this song at a Runrigg concert at Broadford ages ago.
excellent video, nice safe riding.Hope to tour Skye this year.. thanx.(i recognise the flying teddy wearing goggles on front light, seen that a few times)

You are right except one thing: the ferry starts in Armadale. :)
All Skye roads are fantastic but IMO straights are quite uninteresting for the viewer as the point of view doesn't change.
