@dschenek I've actually played with the 5D mark II and it sounded different to me when I was using it in real life. But i agree in here it does sound like something from the rebel series with a hint of the xxD

Would it make sense to put a lens on it for 2 reasons 1) not to ruin the sensor and keep the body clean, 2) nobody takes photos without a lens, so we're not interested in hearing the shutter without it.

In my opinion the shutter of the 5DMII is rather loud and sounds a little as if a spring is loose in the camera. It has never been anything that bothers me though. In the end its just a great camera that takes great pictures.

A) I'll never understand, for the life of me, why people care on iota about the sound of a camera. A cam could sound like ten-thousand people running their fingernails down a chalk board for all I care, as long as the I.Q. is up to par. But, to each his own, I suppose. B) IMO, you're crazy for releasing the shutter with no lens attached. You're inviting all manner of guck and grime onto the sensor.

@BloatedSensations Some people like having a camera with a silent shutter, hence why these are uploaded - so people can decide if the shutter is quiet enough for them. :)

I think the "wheeze" sound stems mainly from :

- slow shutter speed (<1/30?)

- opened mirror box / no bodycap or lens on 5D2

- recording videocam's mic

I have 5D mark II and it doesn't sound like that. The extra squeak sounds like my previous 40D which had a problem with the shutter motor and true enough after it was replaced (since it was still in warranty), sound was back to normal.

To add on, I am also sure that the squeak sound only comes when mirror drops down, not when it's going up. Send to Canon.
