wow, thanks soooo much. my Mom always sang this to me and my siblings at bedtime. I now sing it to my children. I have looked everywhere! thank you so much
This song was on the first album my mom ever owned! Thanks a million times over for posting it! Im sure I have it in my collections, but it would be so scratchy! Awesome to hear it again!
Thanks for sharing! I was just in Willcox, AZ, Rex Allen's territory. Easy to imagine this lifestyle as depicted in the song. noticed it's not on iTUNES...probably not politically correct!
my dad used to sing a version when i was child. it went something like "ook shook mook muskatogeo ook shook moo gee ay mean son don't don't go near the eskimo please do what i say. does anyone know anything about this alt. version?
You are referring to a spoof of this song done by Sheb Wooley.
Where Rex says" My hair was jet black and I was 21 - lots of pretty girls around, but the pale-faced maidens didn't thrill me none around my Cochise County home town" Sheb says:
I was 17 and my voice was changin' but the girls didn't thrill me none. But I longed to go see and Eskimo on the banks of the old Yukon."
@chevyjeffgordon yep ook shuuk mook musky tawkio, ook shuuk mooky a, her name was oomshoknee,im sure the spelling aint right but i remember every word lol
Thanks for posting this on You Tube. I first heard this when I was a child, and bed-ridden due to a kidney infection. It was the mid 1960s, and I had an AM radio that I listened to. My parents were not country music fans, but while twirling the dials, I heard the song, "Son, Don't Go Near The Indians", and I have been looking for it ever since! It is as good as I remembered. Thanks, again!
i also discovered a lot of songs just the same way. bored and curious id search for something different. i used to listen to this on an album my parents had. wore it out.
well it was not rex's song from the beginning but instead Shelby Wooley. when Sheb got an actor job it was postponed and Rex recorded and scored with the song.
Great song thou and Sheb's version "don't go near the eskimos" is a great tune on the same theme!
This very song was on an old 1/4" tape my late father put together in the 1960s - I was always intrigued by it and wondered what the title and singer was. Thanks for clearing up the mystery (!) and for posting it.
hope someone will find a song i heard as a kid on an old 78 Called Heep Big Smoke

Haha, I love this song. It makes me laugh. But Squaws in the Yukon is a much funnier song. I love how politically incorrect songs were back then :D

I really like this record. But I've always seen a definite similarity in melody between this and Rick Nelson's hit "Never Be Anyone Else But You".
