I totally agree. My altar tools are things I found or made myself. My wand is a pine branch that I found outside. My pentacle is a wooden disk that I painted a pentagram and several personal symbols on. My athame is a dull stake knife that has a few symbols painted on the handle. And my chalice is a glass goblet I found in a dollar store. Truth be told, I usually use soil, water, a lit red candle, and incense rather than the tools. I tend to be able to pull more from them than from tools.
