I found these guys in 1979 in San Fran then lost track of them until 2011 over 32 years later, thank you so much, I had these songs in my head all that time comparing them and falling short to others till now
Annie-though so many are biased.... you have no current equal in your genre.....i /no we/ are so fortunate to be alive when you are sharing your talent...
Current? She's never had any equal in female singers for the last what 50 years, I'd go out on a limb to say that. And who cares who doesn't think so, it's not my problem if people are too lazy to open their ears to make out what should be blindingly obvious. All this is of course not to say other female singers lack worth and there are many I love to listen to, Karen Carpenter, Tori Amos, Minnie Riperton, Streisand. But Annie is miles ahead of the pack.
Renaissance fans should check out Within Temptation. Their videos marked "Black Symphony" are from a live recording featuring the Metropole Orchestra & a 20 person choir. Great show & Sharon den Adel is an outstanding vocalist! Thank me later!
@Renaissancefan01 Hello friend! I was very much reminded or Renaissance when I first discovered Within Temptation. I think you'll see & hear similarities as well. Some songs for you to check out: All I Need, Our Solemn Hour, Angels, Ice Queen, Mother Earth, The Promise, The Truth Beneath the Rose, Hand of Sorrow, Jillian (I'd give my heart), & Stand My Ground. Let me know what you think! M.L.
I have heard Within Temptation. Not bad though they were not nearly the first to explore metal with high pitched female vocals. But Sharon is nothing like Annie at all. Anyway, listen to Minnie Riperton, especially the song "Adventures in Paradise" (absolutely incredible vocal coda!) and thank me later. A sadly underrated singer.
saw them twice last week at the Keswick in Pa and last night Oct 17 2009 in AC, although it was just Annie and Mike Dunford, the music was magic !, and they said they be back in 2010, maybe new material?
Annie...going back to Philly's "Prologue", at The Academy.
New York, Philadelphia was always far more aware of what was going-on-musically. As a Philadelphian, after hearing Renaissance back in the VERY early 70's, I embraced Terry, Mick, Jon, You & everyone else I've managed to miss! My faux-pas..!
Think it is safe to say..."WELCOME-BACK", in whatever conformation you're presently in!
Looking forward to The Keswick w/ you and your buds, 10/11/09. Robert
I ran sound for Annie 3 years ago and she still has the pipes. Was a gruelling load in and load out. The venue didnt have any elevators and we had to haul the sound and lighting gear up three flights of stairs, Trussing does not fit well in stair wells. She was great to work with and I would do it again in a second.
I prefer the Classically influenced Metal of Purple or Maiden or Rainbow, but I like Classical Rock as well. Actually most of these
musicians were all influenced not just by Classical, but by Renaissance and Mideival era music as well and of course by Blues, Jazz, and Folk from around the world. Very versatile
I don't see how anyone could come on this video and not say anything kind.
Renaissance is a timeless band.
Their music is young for people who have never heard it and it stands the test of time for generations to come.
There music is still inspiring to me though I have heard it before and over and over. I would like to hear new things though; young or old, I am looking for quality of talent.
I like to close my eyes and hear music the best. I don't need visuals.
These qualify more as "art rock", as do Genesis, Yes, David Bowie, Emerson Lake & Palmer, etc.
I used the term "classical rock", but its known as "symphonic rock" and incorporates groups who use symphonic arrangements on certain tracks but not all.
Wikipedia speaks of Renaissance as rare, noting only 2 other groups (The Enid and Flame Dream, both from Europe) that "clearly embraced what is the principle of the term...used symphonic orchestration and classical styles in almost every composition."
Annie lives in eastern Pennsylvania and records solo. Did a song recently with the band Magenta. I've heard Jon Camp runs a recording studio in England but doesn't play anymore.
Unfortunately No. Annie stated that there never will be another Renaissance reunion after the one of 2001 ("Tuscany" album and tour). Big loss, but I still continue to love ANNIE HASLAM...For Ever....;-)
I still enjoy hearing this track. As a matter of fact, any tune from the "Turn of the Cards" is a winner. I went to see Renaissance back in '77 at Massey Hall in Toronto, Canada. What a voice. Annie still rocks.
I have the complete Carnegie hall concert on cassette tape plus A Song for all seasons, Novella and Turn of the cards on LP - if I can find the part you want will try and post it but I don't know if you can post audio only
Annie sends shivers up the spine of my Sony CRT monitor... by hitting mechanical resonances in its shadow mask, creating fluttering grey stripe patterns which crawl along vertically! **COOL!**
They worked hard at their craft, and I remember how tired they were sometimes backstage during the "grind" of the tour, but they almost always came through in very good form.
Beautiful track from one of the '70s best "art rock" british bands. First saw them in '78 on the "Midnight Special" performing "Carpet of the Sun" & fell in love instantly. Their classical flavor appealed to me as I also listen to various classical-era CDs. I recommend their greatest hits CDs-"Tales Of 1001 Nights. Vols.1&2".
this is a newer interpretation of running hard.i prefer the old one. but thank you for posting it!i love renaissance.if only one there were more renaissance postings on youtube...
