standard PC, good processor, nice amount of ram can start you out , with non home windows version, but you only can connect 10 people to the domain. or get mac server, windows server, any linux.
I'd suggest that you spend a little more time planning what you're going to say. Your presentation isn't very well organized, you omitted or confused information, and you said "you know" quite a lot.
Well you have NAS and SAN storage options when not using drive subsystems within a server. They are starting to overlap somewhat. Typically you use NAS for your consumer or small business mulitmedia needs and SAN for larger environments. Wiki explains it well.
I've tried it on my pc before when I wasn't thinking. I got some sparks when I barely plugged it in and luckily that was all before I yanked the cord out.
I now have a Dell NF500 NAS Rack Server in place (1.3TB) and two DFS Root Servers so I can seamlessly expand my storage in future, or completely move data to another server and user's won't know a thing as DFS will just point to the new share.
RAID 1 & 2? Actually knowing what you're talking about?

Check OpenFiler. You can transform your old computer into a SAN very easy.

But your typical PC sucks for RAID, Connection Limits and Hot-Swap facilities. :o)
I run 11 Servers at my office, by myself and am currently looking at NAS and SAN for my next Storage project.

Well its been a year since my post....

Did this before, very successful.
