Actually, I think it has to do with his gear. One of Burton's big hooks in his music is his vocal distortion in his clean licks. Unlike guys like Warrel Dane, who use simple delay effects and the like to clean up the sound, Burton purposefully alters his voice in recording to fit with the musical style.
He doesn't use these effects live. True, they'd be hard to reproduce, but that's the sound difference. It isn't about skill, he's pretty good. He just doesn't use any effects live.
Burton simply uses a flanger effect in studio and he hits the notes in studio.
Live he sounds simply flat: He can't hit the notes at all and that has absolutely zilch and zero to do with effects: It's about being able to sing or not. He could take lessons but I guess he simply doesn't give a shit. It's ok by me, I love FF anyway.

I think we can all agree that Burton C Bell is no Warrell Dane, but Fear Factory's style makes it difficult for Burton to synthesize his vocals like most other singers do (chorus, fade, and whatnot). His alternation between the singing and growling (which DOES sound exactly like the studio) makes it difficult to process that with vocal distortion.
If they could get him a distortion pedal wired with all that, he'd be gold. And thrashing that hard gets you out of breath real quick.

you guys gotta remember the songs FF are incredibly hard to sing. They have been touring nonstop for the past year. There is a dark bodies video and descent video here somewhere and he nails the vocals nearly flawlessly. Every concert I went to he starts off rough but by the third song he's fine

too bad about the vocals. Burton had a poor start, but recovered towards the end of the song. the second part was definetly better. anyway, great band, great song, great performance !! \m/ \m/ \m/

Saw Fear Factory live in Amsterdam, it rocked but...
The dude cant sing the high clean parts live, sorry to say but its true.
The screaming / grunting vocals were kickass though! And the concert rocked!
