I like some of his songs, but never liked Waits much, and this is why. "His voice is just like that" isn't true, he deliberately makes it more raspy, which is kind of a phony thing to do IMO.
@indalcecio Sure he makes it a little more raspy and deep when he sings, but he really does have a naturally raspy voice, all you need to do is watch interviews of him, even back in the 70's he did
i agree! haha, i was trying to take it seriously, but it just kept reminding me of something the muppets would sing on muppet treasure island or something. i think it was just the extra gruffness
You know, I get overlapping images of the Nightmare Before Christmas opening sequence when listen to this. It's in the same nightmarish vain as that one with similar syncopation.
The only good thing to come from Enron - I now know about this song.

Sounds like a nightmare created by Tim Burton, sung by the devil, personified by this freaky old genius. I love you, Mr Waits.

I've pinpointed Tom Waits' genre. "Topical Avante Garde Industrial Jazz", on the more wild end, even of that spectrum.

I don't know why but this reminds me of grimmer, darker, and much crazier version of Neverhood soundtrack...maybe it's the pace and instrumentals.
