@ColinBobbyDartford you correct grammar on on a site like this? LOL Nobody likes an arrogant grammar nazi. Now your a double twat. Did you see the your? read it and weep.
@ColinBobbyDartford So you made a mistake in English language correcting a mistake in English language?. HAHA. - priceless. At least my 'your' was shot off at 3.30 am when nearly asleep, what's your (read and weep) excuse? Don't you just love it when smart arsed grammer nazi screw up?
@ColinBobbyDartford Yet your (read and weep) able to communicate and answer - I must be doing something right. In addition, I would like to call into question you're (read and weep) intelligence in equating one quite reasonably error when tired (certainly a lesser error than you made) with incoherent illiteracy. I think we can all now can see your (read and weep) the one somewhat lacking. I am incredibly amused at you're (read and weep) digging you'reself a deeper hole.
@ColinBobbyDartford How dense. It is not a Scottish short form of you, it's and informal form of yeah, that is, some Scots will write and say ye for yes. It is an archaic form of you. I already told you this, pay attention.
Would you explain how F, a single letter, is the short form of any word, let alone a two words? F is just F a letter and is a short form of nothing. It has a use for denoting Florine in the periodic table and such, but not the short form of any word.
@Colin You think that is an essay? Do you not know what an essay is? Have you no learning whatsoever? It was a post of two paragraphs explaining your error, obviously it went over your head.
Judging by the fact you have to express your feelings in such a base and neanderthal way this does not surprise.
A further error, I am amused rather than having any feelings of sadness. I'm enjoying laughing at you.
@zaftra Yes, you lost the argument and I told you it's over. I didn't say "it's over and can you carry on typing shite." If you want to continue typing shite then reply below...
@ColinBobbyDartford Of course. I Find it's only polite. Now, which argument was this and specifically which points. You failed to mention. Which is impolite.
You have obviously exhausted what little you had in your mind to start with. Your (read and weep) incapable of answering my question because you've screwed up again.
I am now intrigue as to how important it is for you to have the last word, which, is what this as been all about with you from the get go. You thought puerile swearing would do it, you confused yourself when you actually tried to reason.
ACTUALLY ! ELP recorded it first! ELP as a collective decided not to release it as a single. Greg Lake re-recorded it as a solo artist to cash in at Christmas!
Below tells you everything you need to know about people who hated prog. It wasn't ELP, GET IT? It was Greg Lake and Emerson and Palmer had nothing to do with it. But then you wouldn;t know that and you're not interested either. It's the same cliches about prog over and over again.
Every stadium gig today is overbearing and pompous and it sucks because they rip people off with ticket prices. What planet are you on?
Okay, Im old school...that said at first shot this chick scared the hell out of me with this classic awesome song...but I kept coming back to see what bugged me. The voice was good the song unquestionable and her red hair and black eyes well...ok. I loved this the more I saw it but I figured it out,,,that bloody egyiptian head bobbing deal she does...lmao...if thats all then I need to see more of her work to comment wisely...lol...merry christmas all.
I agree with phocjame... This in no way compares with the original 1975 Greg Lake version. Heck, even his own remakes of the song don't compare with the original...
Started out with negative thoughts about this, then as the song went on I started to like it, if she did the whole song the way she finished I think I would have liked it even more, not as good as Greg Lake (obviously) but better than anyone elses cover.
not a u2 fan but their version is both lyrically and vocally superior.whatever about toyahs version greg should be thanked for a wonderful song but truly awful singer.greg lake awful awful awful.tks again greg
Sack the choreographer indeed, but 2'00" is nice to see.
Still, I've never figured Toyah out.
Saying she isn't genuine is too easy, but I have always had the feeling of...
You know her song "good morning universe, how are you today?" I always picture this little girl full of 'dangerous' make-up, in front of her mirror, and she hasn't noticed the door... "well, for starters, your room needs to be vacuumed, and wouldn't you say good morning to your old mum first? The universe'll wait!"
There are parts about the 80s I love, as a fan of the now canceled Good Guys, but there are parts I can't stand. For fuck sakes, be genuine. This isn't.
My all time Fav christmas song sang by the Brilliant Toyah. I have this on video somewhere Excellent choice Toyah, i think it was a show where Bands sing their Fav songs, shown back in late 1980s i think, great cover version .
Thank you so much for putting this on YouTube! I've wanted to see it again for 27 years! I remember watching this show avidly when I were a nipper, and Toyah's performance was easily the highlight. This is still my favourite Crimbo song (and my favourite version of it) to this day.
This is an example of a moment in time for music. 5 minutes later it's corny and a little disturbing...like parachute pants on MC Hammer. Seemed like a cool idea at the time. But in the end it comes off like a bad Cyndi Lauper knock off (even if this is 2 years earlier than GJWHF), and makes me hope Lauper avoided Christmas music altogether.
You're ignorance of Toyah Willcox's genesis is annoying. You're American right? So you're used to speaking with presumed authority about things you know nothing about. Cyndi Lauper stepped into the limelight 5 years AFTER Toyah began her career. To make the parallel just because they occasionally coloured their hair Orange shows the shallow depth of your observation
great song, but toyah's stagecraft needs some work, way too much vigorous dancing for such a slow piano led tune, constantly melodramatic, and wearing egyptian pagan symbols, dancing egypt style and singing about israelites and christmas...hmmm
@BigChristianMike I'm sure Toyah has worked on her stagecraft a bit since this was 28 years ago. And why can't you dance energetically to a low key song? If the beat fits, go with what you feel. Toyah did her own thing. If everyone allowed their own individuality to come through a bit more maybe society wouldn't be so miserable and hung up.
@KP371 I guess i wasn't saying you couldn't just commenting on contrasting themes, the movements seems incongruous, and yeh go for it, express yourself as you feel, but as i understood it a music video was about making yourself and your song look good, and maybe at the time it did look good, but i would've thought most people would agree that now that looks ridiculous, not as a criticism i'd imagine toyah would think that too
@BigChristianMike I see your point about the contrasting themes. It's an interesting counterpoint really, isn't it?
I actually remember seeing this first time around... IIRC it was a live broadcast or one of those last minute BBC Christmas shows. It wasn't an actual music video. She was still pretty young and new to TV and she hadn't done much like this before. It is a bit awkward in retrospect.
Ah the black contact lenses. Funny was listening to this last night from the 'Mayhem' CD. The sleeve notes contain a quote from Keith Hale the keyboard player - 'the surreal look of the video is probably down to lack of sleep after the tour bus broke down en route from Cardiff. This was followed by having to attend a 7am make-up call which involved most of the cast of Coronation Street!'.
Heard of the existence of this song and expected it would be crap. But fortunately this is the kind of toyah i dó like. Starting off in a way leaving questions (how on Earth a former punkicon can sing a prayer for Christmas?), but then comes up with the question herself.
