  • He managed to fit a semester's worth of material in to 23 minutes. Crazy. Loved his passion. He touched on so many good points. Excellent speech!

  • That guy's breathing is killing me. I'm going to need him to take care of himself :( Brilliant work though.

  • Evil does not exist and hate only exists because people believe in evil. Please stop calling and thinking of things that are bad as "evil". It doesn't exist. I really wish that this thought comes through to as many people as possible. I don't want to see more unnecessary hate and suffering in the world.

  • what you learn in childhood and how you react to what you have learned and developed with present situations will determine what your good and evil choices are in the society you live in. Good and evil are relative. Is it good to eat dogs in the USA, no. In China is it perfectly fine to eat dogs there, yes. So are they "evil" to you. childhood deprevation leads to adult compensation. so when one chooses to do evil in their society they are a bad

    reaction.

  • evil is my ex-wife incarnate!!!

  • M.C: Escher was dutch, not swiss.

  • zimbardo unraveled the psychology of morality - thank you

  • Wonder what this guy's take on sociopaths is? And yes, they are born with the frontal lobe defect that makes them "evil".

  • I resent the fact that TED removed the most graphic images. Stop trying to protect us from reality! I think that to this day the public doesn't really know what went on there. How can we prevent ourselves from doing this again if we are not aware of the full extent of what we are capable of as a species?

  • I meant it often happens from my experience as a follower of Christ is people become Christian because they did bad things and after becoming Christians they look for every opportunity to help others and sacrifice their time an self

  • Often.

  • The internet is growing exponentially! His google "evil" results were 136 million hits in .33 of a second. today, nearly 3 years later, my google "evil" results are 757 million hits in .07 seconds.

  • I don't believe in good or evil is just people perception of whats what. I bought Philips book great book but i still don't believe in good nor evil its still on peoles perception

  • @darkness442003 Yeah, the thing is "What do people perceive as both?" One's idea of evil could be someone's idea of good. For example the Holocaust. Everyone knows that it was bad, but for 'some' German people it was in fact good, because at the time Germany was in the state of economic crisis and Hitler helped them. No, I'm not trying to advocate Nazism or what not. I just think it is the perception of POWER that leads us into thinking and acting that those ways. But that's never going to change

  • @MrRageQuitter Power your talking about is that power of conformity, to be clear following orders. Hitler was a powerful influence this shows humankinds weakness to be swayed by such a weak person. Another example of power of influence in Obama i never believed his speeches are nothing but hot hair i told everyone i did not trust him people called me evil no look at them now. This why good and evil are so unimportant to put stock in

  • @VoxPopuli666 Or, perhaps you're biased in your political views and chose to demonize good people due to their political outlooks? I'm fairly right wing and believe in all personal freedoms to the extent that they don't hurt people.. right wing doesn't mean religious, as I'm atheist..

  • Rumsfeld gave the okay!! Zimbardo has his 'theory' and he is entitled. But to go public with it without the correct facts is perpetrating falsehood. And for those who do not know the facts will believe him. Truly I hope not everyone believes him. Much of what he says, to me, is not common sense.

  • The military members who violated prisoners were trained on torture techniques and were given the okay to use them. One need only do some thorough research to read the facts. We all have choices. I would rather face court marshall than to commit acts of humiliation or violence against a fellow human being. THERE IS ALWAYS A CHOICE even when a gun is held to one's head, the choice is do the dirty deed or die. My choice would be - "shoot me".

  • @inhisgrace007 Amen to that.

  • Interesting. But I do not agree totally. Two contentions - One: Lucifer was not God's favorite angel, nor was he ever considered the morning star. Two; his comment about God not doing a good job of keeping evil in hell. An imperfect man judging God is like shooting oneself in the foot. IF people turn evil, given certain circumstances, then explain to me why captives of middle east terrorists did not turn evil during or after captivity.

  • @inhisgrace007 Well, your research is based on a subjective book written by man, so you are the perfect example of a human being under the influence of mind control. Have a nice day.

  • @AgentxAnonymous It seems redundant to argue with you because it is about decision. Your choice to believe in what you believe and it's my choice to back off from what you believe and just not accept your POV. I mean your view has to be shaped by something and that is what means 'being under the influence of mind control'. Well not in the major sense of mind control but maybe environmental influence.

  • @AgentxAnonymous My decision to back off shows direct similarities to the other people who watched the guy jump off the train tracks to save the other guy.

  • @inhisgrace007 Interesting viewpoint. However, Lucifer "means" morning star. Not "considered" the morning star. Question: Do you personally know the captives? The point of the video is "circumstances" combined with the person's perception under those circumstances will influence people in the "choices" they make.

  • Very interesting. One contention - Lucifer was not God's favorite angel, nor was he ever considered the morning star. I do not believe, personally, all people, given a certain set of circumstances, would do evil. Why? By believing there is always a choice even if only there are only two choices.

  • evil can also be defined as the absence of good

  • man he brings up great points

  • and i married her the next year hahaha!

  • He doesn't look 75

  • When I saw the picture at 1:23 I immediately saw the world of demons, and even after he mentioned there were angels, I had trouble noticing them... I hope this isn't a sign of any underlying psychological issues.

  • TED... I have to sleep...

  • So the Luciferian way to be devious is to diffuse evil in such a way that "what" are those things to be responsible upon is not known and "who" should be responsible on cannot be identified. Is that the gist of it?

  • wow this is very interesting and very logical and explained greatly - good for him marrying her ther next year bizzare!!

  • HEH

Everyone needs to see this. Very well presented. Its funny because I just had a hour debate with my sis about this very topic. To say the least she falls into the "passive" state.

  • Gangstalkers = COINTELPRO perps = US prison abusers = real subjects of Milgram (obedience) experiment

    世界一 病んだ変態 ナチスアメリカ

  • he married her the next year hahahahahahahahahahahaha

  • Reminds me of what the Stanford prison experiment also showed.

  • Nice application to a real life example, but I don't see what this proves that the Stanford prison experiment hasn't already.

  • LOL. Ding! Ding! Ding!

  • this guy is very unique and i support his investigations DR ZİMARDO FTW :)

  • I think he should stop using the term "evil" to describe violent or cruel acts. People often equate the term "evil" with a malevolent, invisible force ~ other than a decision. It might misinform.

  • @MolecularMoonlight evil is the definition of that haha

  • Know what makes his stomach big and round like that? Swallowing watermelon seeds.

  • this is super important. I would love to talk negatively after this and talk about all the "righteous people" and "normal people" to blame. But I will go only this far. If any of you want things different, you have to, like Zimbardo said, not be afraid to act out.

That takes time to learn. Our human instinct is to not stick out, follow what everyone is doing. Evil spreads that way. It's ok if it doesn't work out at first... learn, and break the cycle. I hope everyone can do that.

  • An example of anonymity and lack of a defined set of rules and leadership is the Threat Fusion Centers popping up all over America. Their Stasi-like tactics of placing people on watch lists because they were seen in a political rally or supporting Ron Paul is frightening. If this is the beginning, what happens when they turn up the voltage?

  • The statistical rise in “evil” acts when anonymity is introduced is very interesting to me. During the protests of the G20 in Pittsburgh, most of the police were not wearing name tags or badges. Many of them were wearing helmets which covered their faces. There are many YouTube videos of those police beating and abusing innocent protesters.

  • Comment removed

  • i see the biggest experiment in human history in video games like grand theft auto, u give a nice kid the game and he ends up blowing up cops and innocent civilians, very interesting video

  • Power is the key word here. When I researched this atrocity, I found out that England was being abused by her boyfriend. Putting people into a situation like this is going to end badly, because of a thirst for power.

  • I can't stop seeing the demons...

    I can't see the angels

  • The part where he describes his friends in a Dr. Jekyll /Mr. Hyde scenario and proceeds to relate their drug use as evidence of Jekyll/Hyde.

    @:30

  • I'm very adamant follow of Zimbardo. In fact, I have his autographed stored and actually received a hug from him when he visited my college, at this time he just started writing the Lucifer effect. My only contention with this is the idea of "evil" being a construct of objectivity and not a subjective one. Evil, as we call it always has and will be something that society lays claim to. I wish he'd use a term like "inhumane".

  • fail for very sneakily equating drugs with evil.

  • @thodal2000 can you give me the time in the video?

  • @qttytn The part where he describes his friends in a Dr. Jekyll /Mr. Hyde scenario and proceeds to relate their drug use as evidence of Jekyll/Hyde.

    @:30

  • @thodal2000 My interpretation is that he was tying in drugs as a symptom of greater social problems in that community, rather than demonising the act of drug use itself

  • The dude looks pregnant.

  • i saw the demons before the angels too. does that mean i look for evil first? or i am to quick to see the evil or blinded by it that i dont see the good in people first?

  • Keep up the good video work looking good. When you have time come visit my channel!

  • @ 20:14 GOOD WINS OVER EVIL (-:

  • Atheism promotes these type of behavior. Aggressive Atheism that is.

Richard Dawkins and Dennett are creating a hate group.

  • Comment removed

  • @studiousx3 Yeah all those people in the Milgram experiments must have been atheists, My Lai massacre too. Thats because if you are religious and you commit evil you can't be a "real" Christian right? By the way Hitler was a Catholic but followed Martin Luthers Antisemetic teachings. Read Mein Kampf if you don't believe me. Atheists are a quick and easy scapegoat. Sorry but a non belief in a sky daddy changes nothing, Morality- you either have it- or you don't.

  • wow... who the fuck would thumbs down Phillip Zimbardo? he did one of the most ground breaking psychology experiments in history, geez, some people just can't acknowledge the power of the social situations can they?

  • @Texemosis 57 EVIL people gave a thumbs down

  • Excellent.

    Like - Comment & Subscribe! ;-)

  • This is more by the social training we've received, a person being kind in its everyday doesn't means that he is "good person" just that he have been training like that to receive more social compensations. This and excessive morality always kill what you call "goodness"inside of many

  • Very interesting indeed.

But Escher was Dutch, not Swiss.

  • Interesting, but not groundbreaking, Notice, all of the really amazed, people are psych 101 class members. Evil is not only rampant, it is omnipresent; it is through a balance of good or evil (not and, because some of us choose one over the other) that true happiness is achieved. If we didn't have bad days, we wouldn't notice the good ones; without monstrous evil, we cannot recognize sublime good.

  • @sbhattacherya I do not believe what you said is the least bit true. When rounding a mountain top looking out over an amazing scenic view, we are able to marvel at its splendor...even without having previously viewed any ugliness. I have heard the logic you repeated over and over throughout my life, and can say categorically that we ARE able to appreciate beauty, goodness, and truth on their own terms. Evil is not necessary in this world. I refuse to NEED it, or to justify its existence.

  • @florydory The view of the mountain top is 'beautiful' yes. had you seen nothing but that view you wouldn't just think "oh thats beautiful", you build your own belief of what is beautiful or not based on your past experiences. Even though before you might have not seen something ugly, it wasn't AS beautiful as what you see now so you can appreciate it.

You can only truly appreciate something if you are knowledgeable and can compare it to something else

  • @florydory A man who scores 10, 20 and 30 on a test would be appreciative of a 60. A man who scores 70, 80, and 90 on a test would view 60 as terrible.

You only can view things based on past experiences, and without a "lower" experience, you would have no reason to view something as "beautiful" or a "higher" experience, because you've had nothing lesser to compare it to.

If every single hill on this planet was an "amazing scenic view", you would not think it so amazing.

  • @veget00tegev >if every single hill on this planet was an "amazing scenic view" you would not think it so amazing<

I don't agree. Maslow observed people of note whom he considered to be "self actualized" (content, successful and self determining). He marveled that this group never seemed to tire of life, and had “the capacity to appreciate the sunrise or sunset or nature again and again.” The habit of comparing experiences then ranking them in the order of appreciation they deserve is learned

  • We watched this is our psycology class.

  • Dr. Kenneth Gutmman, Citrus College Psychology Professor, showed us this video today. Disturbing but VERY interesting. Really made the class think.

  • Great video! Applaud.

  • This is exactly what happens all the time in schools and work places... this is exactly how bullying works.

  • I think there is a lot of misunderstanding of Phil Zimbardo's thesis .He is not denying 'evil' impulses in anyone - or heroic either - he is explaining that they are not exclusive....It is very comforting for us to think we are 'good' people and these others are 'bad ' people - the fact is there are just people - and what transforms you is the siutation. This can begin early in life, upbringing is situational.., there may be genetic factors - but ultimately evil needs a fertile soil to grow..

  • @georgiegirlize can i use ur comment on my fb?....very interesting....i will credit you

  • @georgiegirlize can i use ur comment on my fb?....very interesting....i will credit you

  • @awuahnsiah Hi, No problem, feel free!

  • @georgiegirlize thanks

  • i looked at this 3 times..still see devils..wtf

  • @trufiend138 Focus on the white spce.

  • wow he is talking fast...TED should have gave him an xtra 10 mins just so he could be comfortable and get it all out...I THINK..Zimbardo deserves it....

  • Amazing how many would either stand by and do nothing or would rather screw over their fellow human instead for power/pride/sheep mentality or whatever this inner 'reward' is they get from it - makes me sick and glad it won't EVER be me - I was brought up better than that.

I'm with team NYC subway man - first instinct to do what everyone else 'should' have done - there is some hope n decent folk left afterall! :0)

  • It’s a rather naive assumption and highly unscientific to say that these “people” who obviously enjoy torturing their prisoners, were “good” at one certain point, before they were sent to that war(by themselves as no one forced them), or before they joined the military in the first place. This type of deep sadism, it is far more plausible to say based on most psychological theories tested so far, develops much earlier, as early 3 years old.

  • @eldadevata It develops early and its expressed at a later stage, when that particular individual, due to its “achievements” and “ambition” reaches a position of power. I find the idea of power corrupting “good” people horribly unrealistic, and anchored in a religious/irrational view of life. A far more plausible explanation, is indeed that this characteristic(evil) is developed early in life, largely due to genetics and partially due to environmental effect.

  • @eldadevata The fact that this level of cruelty and sadism, (which actually is not far away from that of an everyday soldier that is prepared to kill its “enemy” at any given time) is caused most probably by genetic programming, doesn’t mean that the responsibility of the society is obsolete. We are responsible for finding out, what causes this obvious disease and cure/prevent it. The minimum thing is to expose it and lock them up as to protect the rest of us.

  • @eldadevata Zimbardo doesn't devalue personal responsibility. Look at the slide "7 Processes that Grease the Slippery Slope of Evil." "Diffusion of Personal Responsibility" is one of the bullet points. Milgram's subjects choose to electrocute when they're told they aren't responsible (see 11:10-11:20). Zimbardo calls his wife a heroine for making him personally responsible for his prison experiment. He's saying to investigate the processes that make people this way as well as individual traits.

  • This video furthers my view of what we are turning in to. We are living in an era of irresponsibility in which we blame society, others, and the "system" for our decisions. It takes the responsibility off of the individual. "He was a product of his environment"

  • is adolf hitler riseing again evil appears threw history on mass scales in history and now

  • people turn evil by giving into the world . im just to make a long story short !

  • Just realized that angels are depicted as being very feminine, I remember when I was little I thought the devil was cooler cause he was masculine... that possibly had some juvenile impression to do some bad things (to be cool), I wouldn't be surprised.. I'm a well educated and adjusted person but I can totally see how some boys would think this way.

  • As I am Dutch I must state that MC Escher was dutch, not swiss. Other than that this was an extremely interesting lecture!

  • 5:42 Thumbs up for psycho authority abuse :(

  • This is extremely interesting.

  • 17:54 *ERROR-SPREE* =O

  • 17:37 *ERROR* xD

  • Cant even see the Angles.

  • i guess...IF people could turn back the time, smell a flower instead of running around with there cellphone making meetings to recieve and deliever money.

who gave you life?..who raised you?. who were your neighbour etc, the nature gives us the answers for how to live..how to be..how to see..and what do we do?..we stare at nature thru a f`cking television. animals are beeing erased from the face of earth. and we just continue to grow..and grow....and grow..did you do your calculations people

  • @Wiking80 did you do your shutupyoucuntulations? this is lecture on PSYCHOLOGY not global warming! i have no problem with people that are mindful of the dangers posed by the continued expansion of the human race. However if you talk down to me or anyone for that matter about it, particularly while on an unrelated video then you are simply dumb

  • @TheRapeBear

then indian told a little girl..we all have 2 wolfs livin inside of us..the little girl asked: what do they eat..then indian replied..one eats fear..hate...the other love..warmth..and wich one would defeat the other..depends on who you feed! perhaps you could read my comment for what it is and stop this nonsence refering to globalwarming..iam not in that era..but thanks for your words..peace out

  • American's presiednt's are talking abaut Holocaust, but they are not any better!!

  • Isn't wanting to be a hero egocentrical?

  • when the "angels and bats"slide appeared,he assumed that you see the angels first.

  • i dont see heinous torture,, this guy n libfuktards have an agenda, truly heinous torture is on the order of baboo shoots up nail beds , cattle prods in orifices , maiming , death , n worse,, waterboarding n being embarrassed but not having true pain n damage inflicted , ehh> please stfup

  • Zimbardo seems to buy into the government's explanation of Abu Ghraib abuses as power without authority. Many believe the tactics actually came from the highest authorities.

  • 52 people work for scientology.

  • Not all evil is of the same constitution. Some evil can respond to heart power (self-sacrifice) alone, if the evil is being committed by people whose conscience can be reached (Ghandi, MLK). But sometimes that's not the case, as in Hitler and Tojo (and most criminals) and in those kinds of cases it takes more: self-sacrifice AND power, to prevent and overcome evil. Hence police forces, armed guards, standing armies, etc. ... So you're only partly right in your assessment.

  • There were obviously a few soldiers who were against these actions and submitted these photos and Ivan Frederick family themselves submitted these photos to 60 minutes.

  • remember Philip Zimbardo repesented the defense of Sgt. Ivan Frederick. He is using the government system to blame for the actions of these officers. Saying that they were under pressure to get Intel from the prisoners which was their motive for their torture. It is still down to the individual to choose whether to take part in doing these evil actions or not.

  • @rmjeanes That din make no sense.

  • I love Philip Zimbardo ever since I watched a documentary on psychology with him in it

  • "There is good and bad in everyone." Paul McCartney, "Ebony and Ivory"

  • Zimbardo is leaving out the fact that some 'guards' were sadistic and others weren't.

  • @marvy1118 What you watched was a summary of a 2 hour presentation. He left a lot of things out.

  • USA is evil and read the article in the NY Times by Seymore Hersh about the torture of children in Abu Graib; including sodomizing them. it was all videotaped by USA government workers. USA is the beast.

  • Online dating brides **busizz4me.info**

  • is he pregnant?

  • @LosChicosSexos LMFAO

  • @LosChicosSexos IS HE SMARTER THAN YOU? LOL

  • @LosChicosSexos

    oh gee... another troll

  • everyone needs to watch this.

  • Escher Was Dutch, not Swiss.

  • LOL he married her the next year XD

  • i saw the demons before i saw the angels O_O

  • @theazn07 ;-)

  • @theazn07 ,the reason is that you tend to look for meaning in the black part first,,,as in reading something,,,also the subject was "evil",,,,so,,,

  • @theazn07 i still couldnt see the angels when he said haha eeek!

  • @theazn07 me too =/

  • @theazn07 visually, they stood out much more. or it could be cause you're EVILLLLL! ;)

  • The Devil was not involved in the production of this film. There were no obvious or certified demon possessions. Only Human beings possessed of indifference towards their fellow human beings. Human beings who erroneously saw (and continue to see) cultural differences as physical rather than superficial. Human beings who gloried in their power of death over life.

  • the main point is that while those have been the results there exists a necessity to defy the current of the argued natural response to power. also see definitions of power. tolstoy has a nice rant in war and peace (you probably don't need to read the rest of the book to get it but you should).

  • so the main point from this whole talk is that if u are given power to abuse, you will abuse it. if you can do evil on anonymity, chances that you would, is higher.

WOW. seriously, if i didn't listen to this talk, i wouldn't have known.

  • Loved it when you came to Victoria, Camosun College.

  • Evil starts with giving this video a "thumbs down".

  • Coupled with the t-shirt the irony is that Zimbardo is about the most satanic looking speaker I`ve seen.

  • and zimbardo is super^^anyways

  • Escher is dutch, a frisian to be exact

  • EAT THE DAMN SAUSAGES

  • Phenomenal lecture by a phenomenal Psychologist.

  • wasnt escher dutch?

  • this the reason im misanthrope

  • I saw the devils first in that Escher thing. Thought they were just bats at first.

  • So many ignorant people on here. the ID supplies the notion of "If it feels good, do it" The ego allows for logical thought process to obtain what you desire ethically. The superego, is the "moral watchdog" it keeps your ethics in tact.

  • @severrin That is usually the way it works, but many people who commit immoral acts justify it on an ego (or even a superego level).

  • abuse and deviousness

  • What the hell is happening in this world we are living in?!

  • lolololol

"the good news is that I married her the next year"

  • You are fulll of shit! Too bad you where not alive during the judgements againsts the nazis, maybe you would of help to aquit them! The truth is that when "good" people do bad things it only means that they were evil all along. One makes the choice to do good or evil.

  • Some one become a naughty women mworld5.info

  • I disagree with the hero thing. Hitler thought of himself as a hero and a nation believed him. Look how dumb Obama and his supports are.

  • @Blastfimus777 You totally missed the point. Act socio-centrically not egocentrically is a hero, and the reverse is dictation.

  • @hmsrenown What...Hitler didn't think he was working for the common good? That some how he wasn't "socio-centric?" If people were more egocentric, it would be easier to take the time needed to understand one's self. Than we wouldn't have to establish a system which inevitability employs this kind of dysfunction, as shown above. This is just more "Crusader ism," Now we'll have a bunch of dysfunctional people running around acting like saviors.

  • @Blastfimus777 <-------Republican BITCH!

  • @YoungJTimothyDuece HAHAHA...Republicans ans Democrats are the same; Bush fucks Obama up the ass while you suck their dicks.

  • @YoungJTimothyDuece <--------My BITCH!

  • scary scary scary this is supposed to be viewer's discretion

  • Here's what he had to say in an interview:

    Q. From your book, I sense you feel some lingering guilt about organizing “the most unethical study” ever. Do you?

    A. When I look back on it, I think, “Why didn’t you stop the cruelty earlier?” To stand back was contrary to my upbringing and nature.

When I stood back as a noninterfering experimental scientist, I was, in a sense, as drawn into the power of the situation as any prisoners and guards.

  • @rgz1985 So? It only proved his theory right.

  • @wytentegowawszy That doesn't give him an excuse to violate the rights of others and his theory wasn't proved right. If his proponents acknowledged it was not replica because many of the scientific controls were absent.

  • Comment removed

  • Philip Zimbardo is evil for setting up such an evil experiment. It was totally unethical for him to do. I can't believe he got all these awards. He should be disbarred.

  • @rgz1985 so your opinion is nobody can make a mistake in this fine subject or bear the consequences for their life? It's always easy to criticize than to understand what happened.

  • @hmsrenown It is more complicated than that. Furthermore, your logic makes no sense. For instance, a person can make a "mistake" by getting behind the wheel and texting while driving or drinking while driving and end up running someone over with no intention of wanting to do so but they are still responsible and liable for there actions. The more you know!

  • @rgz1985 "No Intention" The study is about why people would do atrocious acts intentionally

  • @rgz1985 I was rather disturbed by his experiment. It was pretty damn sick.

  • @honesthua Thanks for agreeing. I have no idea why everyone praises him for it. Yes, it is interesting, but so were the Nazi experiments on Jews, Russians, and political prisoners. In both cases it doesn't mean that they were right to do in the first place. Given, the later case I mentioned is much more extreme to say the least than what Zimbardo did, but still both cases were morally wrong.

  • @rgz1985 Do you guys realize that the Stanford prison experiment was initially set up to see if type of mental effect roles of power would have on individuals. There was no intent to cause harm to any individual, and anything that was done was done so BY the people being observed. Point of fact, after the 2nd day of the experiment the "prisoners" staged a riot, and the guards actions were in response of that riot. No observer had any direct involvement in the experiment other than ending it.

  • @severrin Ok...your point?

  • @severrin like the ATF at Wacko Texas

  • @DancingSpiderman Wacko & Jones Town were the work of USA fascist government.
