Alright I've started to do 4 sets of straight crunches and 4 sets of oblique crunches once a week or every 6 days rather, instead of 4 sets of just straight crunches every day with just a 2-3 day rest out of the week. Does this sound more appropriate for a more advanced workout? Curious if I should rest maybe shorter or longer, also should I be sore after? Because usually I can just lightly feel a burn but after a day they're fine.& how long should I rest between sets? :) sry for the questions!
Just want to make sure I will continue to build my abdominal area doing them less frequently than I was by doing somewhat more once a week. Also when you said work them 30-45 mins in a comment you replied to I'm assume you mean both sets of oblique crunches and straight ab crunches together right?. Thanks!
If your neck hurts when doing any ab exercise then you are definitely doing something wrong. Might be time to hire a personal trainer and have them watch your form to figure out what you are doing wrong.
I'm not thin or fat at all I can see & feel my abs but not enough, I want them bigger. Thanks for the advice, I didn't know that crunches cannot increase your ab size.
I didn't say crunches don't increase your abs, I said -300- crunches don't. Does your hand get stronger when you tap on a table 500 times every day?
You need to do 15-20 crunches in 3 sets WITH A WEIGHT you hold behind your head. After some time you use a little more weight and so on, just like you do for any other muscle.
I stand with a dumbell in one hand and my other hand on my head and by leaning to one side then straightening back I work my obliques. A bit more fun than crunches in my opinion.
About that law-suit thing with your newest video I asked my cousin who's a lawyer and he said they cannot sue you for many reasons. First of all you put 8 warnings in your video, including Hans :) Second there are videos like how to make a fireball that don't even have warning signs and could really hurt people, but their creators were not sued. If you need any more info I'll ask him.
Scooby, I'm really sorry for being this boring but I really want to get six-pack abs (my goal is 6-pack abs with deep valleys, not endurance or anything). Instead of crunches with plate, can I workout my abs for 30-40 minutes starting with five ab warm-up exercises (5-8 minutes) and then do crunches (your way) for the rest of the time (around 35 minutes) yesterday I did it this way I did 600 crunches in two sets and now I can feel the abs. Will this give me six pack abs (I have no fat problems)?
Once more: If you are essentially slim and your abs don't show you need to exercise them to make them bigger.
And basically you should exercise them like any other muscle, as in using a specific weight and when that weight is not heavy enough anymore you increase it.
A set of 300 crunches will do NOTHING for the size of your abs.
OMG didn't know you were 47...(O.O); you don't look older than 35 =]. Seriously!~ I've seen some 30's that look way older than you. I guess there is a direct relationship with health/fitness and looking young =]. Kudos!~
Change places? Where exactly are you living?Well, Berlin is very ugly during this time of the year. So i think for me it would be the better deal. But Hans would love it here.Hey scooby what's the story behind Hans and Alles klar? German relatives? Or is it because of Arnold??
Looking forward for your next episode. Scooby...do you post something for ASS-Workout?
scooby son.. you're a god among men. I've been doing an exercise that i don't know the name of where i hold a 10 kg plate raise my legs and twist from side to side and although it did help i don't feel it singled out my obliques properly and when they became more developed the exercise did very little. These crunches help a lot = ]
In tomorrows video (Wed 10/29) I show you how to make your own cable setup for doing cable crunches, lat pulldowns, and tricep pushdowns. Stay tuned ...
I do about 3-4 sets of situps every single day each set until I feel tired then I rest for about 30-45 secs and go again. You said something about doing it once a week working them really hard on that day. Do you think it matters that much? Its hard to tell, I have a developed abdominal area, been working out for about 3 months now. Don't have much body fat at all and I eat properly, very similar to your diet & 21 years old. Not sure if I should give the once a week a shot or continue everyday.
It's just kind of a nice feeling to feel like you're making progress everyday instead of once a week I suppose, but if once a week working really hard is better then I probably wouldn't mind.
You don't want to overtrain. The abs are a muscle group just like any other. If you don't workout your other muscles everyday then why should abs be an exception?
Yeah agreed, I didn't fit everything I do in that paragraph but of course I take 2-3 days rest time (I just meant every day that I work out), that goes for all my muscle groups. I just want to know in his view if it is more effective to do it one way or the other or does it really matter. hopefully he will get back to me.
One thing to point out. Bigger, stronger abs mean increasing your waist measurement - muscles take up room. Some men dont want this and most women do not.
I cover this in the video that is coming out in 2 weeks (cable crunches) because I realize that I confuse people here. IMHO, abs are like any other muscle. If you want the ab muscles bigger (bigger ridges & deeper valleys) then work them out hard for 30-40min with high resistance like any other muscle then let them rest till they are recovered (4-7 days). On the other hand, if you just want a strong core for general health you can do abs for a few minutes every day. Alles Klar?

Hi Scooby, another excellent video, your videos are really best on YouTube.
I have a question for you. I'm a Judo fighter from Serbia and I really need to exercise my abs more. And I don't have any fat problems. I do 5 ab warm-up exercises and then 400 crunches (I do them your way) everyday, and I was wondering can you please post a video or tell me some Killer Ab Workout (like your Killer Arm Workout but for abs), or another way to exercise my abs even better.
Hey Scooby i just wanted your opinion on this workout plan i currently have been doing for 2weeks now. Mon-chest/biceps, Tues- triceps/abs, Wed-rest, Thurs-Legs, Fri-Back/shoulders, Sat/Sun-rest. Is this an appropriate plan? Just asking early to see if it needs changes before i get into a routine. Thanks in advance.
You shouldn't do sit ups at all, they are bad for your back and don't train the abs much anyway. Instead go for crunches like Scooby's describes them on his website under Exercises > Abdominal Exercises.
Hi scooby. I'm 18 now and started going to the gym when I was 15. I was a small guy (110 lbs) but they always told me to do more weight so that's what I did. I was able to super squat 380lbs on 16 year age and going to the gym 5-6 times a week. In about 1-1,5 year I gained 45lbs.
But right now my back, knees and shoulders hurt (only during training) but all I did was what the instructers told me. Many things you said are bad for you I had to do in my gym. What should I do?
hi scooby, I was just watching the Chest Workouts: Self Spotting Techniques for Heavy Lifting video and you said that when you use a bench to bench press two dumb bells, when you drop the weights it will hurt your shoulders. now in my case, im double jointed and never had a problem with using a bench. so is it ok if im double jointed or it is still not recommended?
I am putting this here because i couldn't post comments in that video and i couldn't send you a message.
Sorry, I know nothing about double-jointedness but I'm sure it does NOT mean that you have injury immunity. I would still take all the precautions I suggest.
I was going to ask this question on your nutrition video Scooby, but comments were disabled. So, how often is alcohol OK? Nothing too hard, just like beer or wine?
If your parents/grandparents have any history of alcohol abuse, I would completely avoid alcohol. Other than that, studies have shown that small amounts of daily alcohol (like a glass of red wine with dinner) can have beneficial effects. Then its just a matter of empty calories. If you are lean already, these calories are no big deal. If you have a lot of weight to lose, then I would avoid booze till you drop to your target weight. A motivation of sorts too :)
Thanks heaps. And yeah, I also heard it was some what beneficial as it kills bacteria in your system (or something). But as useul I then heard conflicting reports that it acctual does more bad and kills the "good" bacteria lol. Also weight isn't a problem. I'm just trying to build muscle. What do you suggest in the way of cardio exercise when it is raining? As it seems to be raining 3/4 of the time where I am.
Oh, of course. Why didn't I think of that? lol. I heard boxers do that. Other than the cardio part of jumping rope, does it help simile muscles to that of running?
You know, some of the most annoying injuries happen in the most unlikely ways. I also have had muscle pulls from sleeping in some contorted position that has taken ages to heal. Wanna hear something so stupid that its funny? My weirdest injury came from yawning! I kid you not, I pulled some muscle in my neck near the tongue and it hurt so bad that I had trouble eating for a week and a half.
That is so true. I quite often get pulled muscles, mostly it happens when I'm getting dressed/undressed (and it's not that I'm wearing some kind of latex creation- just normal clothes!)I pulled my shoulder pulling my belt tight as I was getting ready for my Aikido class, and once I dislocated my thumb PUTTING MY SOCKS ON!!! It happened once before, and I have no clue how. One time I hurt my knee without knowing how- it was bruised inside and the Dr said it might have dislocated and gone back in.
OK, thats a good one - dislocating your thumb putting your socks on. I didnt think anyone could beat my "yawning" injury but I think you tied me with your sock injury :)
scooby i hafe a qeustion : i,m 14 years old i do 100 normal crunches/zitups and like 50 pushups each day is that good ? please gife a answer.. and nice vid man again a good vid;)
I cant really give you any advice here because its so specific to where you are mounting it. Best is to use a garage if you have one. Check out my video "Vacation Workouts" to give you some other ideas about places near your home that you could do pullups
hello scooby its me again i checked out your website and i have realised the errors in my ways. i was mainly using the chest press and that was probably the reason for my chest being different.
im going to use dumbbells and other free weights and also use a barbell.
this is a little bit off topic. lol but ive noticed ive seen alot of ppl in shape like yourself that are bald. is there a certain reason or r u balding? sorry if it sounds like im being rude im just curious
No, its not rude. Actually, I'm not bald but I keep my hair clipped very close. I choose to keep my hair closely cropped for practical reasons. I exercise hours each day and sweat profusely and have always found hair a nuisance. Its also a lot easier to cut your own hair than go to get it cut. What can I say, I'm an engineer and its all about practicality.
If you go to my profile, there are playlists organized by bodypart. Am I missing something, is there a better way to organize videos on youtube? I'm still a bit of a newbie and would appreciate any youtube pointers.
I agree with you on the cable crunches. Much better in my opinion than anything else (besides that weird machine that most gyms have that twist your torso with weights...). I always get a nice burn in my obliques when I do them! Still, I tried your oblique crunch and it works great! Thanks Scoob!
Depends. I go to a gym about 6 months out of the year. I've been working out at home since July 1st. I like the change of environment and my local gyms suck.
well he uses no supplements whatsoever, no steroids, the body he has is his maximum genetic potential. you might be bigger because of "better" genes. and actually his videos are great
scooby you fucking retard.. you have the worst side abs ever.. stop telling me shits how eggs are bad to eat etc for abs.. my friend (bodybuilder) is eating eggs every morning and he has 10 times better abs then you!
Kid probably has the metabolism of Michael Phelps... he's only offering food advice, not everyone needs to take it. I am only 21, have that rocket metabolism and fill my diet with fat and carbs to keep me going. Most of his food advice is for those whom are completely out of shape or the metabolism of youth has stopped working for you. There will come a day when eating pizza and coney dogs, while drinking a 2 liter of Coke and Jack in it will start to add up. Lots enjoy the advice, don't hate
You ever hear of constructive criticism? The guy obviously has some knowledge and puts up these videos for free to help newbies. I don't see how that warrants that level of negativity.
hey scoob only my 2 lowest abs are covered with fat and on the rest of my body i dont have any fat at all so maybe you can give me a hint on how to loose that fat.
hey scooby ive been working out for about 1 year now, my muscles are well defined but my weight is still the same, can you give me some advice on how to gain more weight and muscle mass? thanks a lot scooby
Hey Scooby could you please tell me, what should I do for my abs, they are distorted little bit? Will they get straight or is it forever? Thankyou for you answer beforehand.
Abdominals really are left up to genetics. Some people have the washboard, some people have alternating abs, and some people have something in between. There's really nothing you can do. I hope that answers your question, in case Scooby doesn't get to.
i have a Q for ya scooby. when i work out i find that i hardly ever get muscle burn but i kinda run out of energy around 8-10 reps. i used to do alot of endurance when i was a kid, is that why or am i doin somthing wrong?
Ideally as long as you can. You will wake up naturally when you have had enough sleep. IMHO, alarm clocks are the #1 cause of stress in this country.
the reverse curls do your forearm and dumbbell hammer curl. ive never bothered doing them because everything seems to hurt your forearms and mine am massive...
I like the beach idea. Soft ground might even be better. Normal crunches on my floor end up hurting my spine so I'm forced to use a pillow which screws up my form. Catch 22...
if they hurt your spine then your doing them wrong, your probably lifting your head up rather then keeping it in place (i used to that, it killed) just keep your neck straight and it shouldn't hurt, but thats just from personal experience :)
I'll focus on proper form rather than quantity. I'm trying to get myself in proper shape for a PFT so I'm rushing myself through things when I shouldn't. Thanks.
Who is that woman's voice in the background? Is she your videographer, Scooby? You're lucky to have found an open beach in Southern California lol - I find Newport works well ;-)
Hey Scooby, I have a question I hope you can answer. When I work out I never know how many repetitions I should do, I usually do 5-10 reps with 3 sets of high weight but I don't know if I am maximizing my muscle building potential. Any thoughts?
I think hes stranded on a tropical island, and hes trying to escape by building a plane in his garrage, but he wasnt stronge enough to build it with his hands, so he had to get stronger. so he flew hans over to teach him some things about working out. he then got stronger and more educated then hans so he shoved a banana in his face... and that is why he shoved a banana in his face :D
hi scooby my question is how long do u think it will take to get stonger in any of your exersizes

500 reps will get you nowhere, if you want to increase the size of your abs. It will only train muscle endurance, but not strength.
Try to do the crunches with a weightplate you hold behind your head. When I do them that way I aim for 15-20 reps in 3 sets.
For more hints check Scooby's website under Exercises > Abdominal Exercises. The hanging leg raise might be interesting for you.

Visit a doctor and a physical therapist to find out if there is permanent damage and what you can do to make the pain go away.
This again proves that even instructors sometimes have no idea what they are talking about.

A motivation of sorts too :)
scooby1961 3 years ago
Thanks heaps. And yeah, I also heard it was some what beneficial as it kills bacteria in your system (or something). But as useul I then heard conflicting reports that it acctual does more bad and kills the "good" bacteria lol. Also weight isn't a problem. I'm just trying to build muscle. What do you suggest in the way of cardio exercise when it is raining? As it seems to be raining 3/4 of the time where I am.
tyzereon 3 years ago
Jumping rope is excellent cardio.
scooby1961 3 years ago
Oh, of course. Why didn't I think of that? lol. I heard boxers do that. Other than the cardio part of jumping rope, does it help simile muscles to that of running?

i wan the lower abs how i get it ??? this only get upper abs zzz
chainkjr 3 years ago
The only way to make the lower abs visible is to reduce your bodyfat levels by eating less and doing more cardio.
scooby1961 3 years ago
thanks scooby1961

ouch, that happened to me before.
Saphiregun 3 years ago
holy frick was it in a awkward position?
Saphiregun 3 years ago
You know, some of the most annoying injuries happen in the most unlikely ways. I also have had muscle pulls from sleeping in some contorted position that has taken ages to heal. Wanna hear something so stupid that its funny? My weirdest injury came from yawning! I kid you not, I pulled some muscle in my neck near the tongue and it hurt so bad that I had trouble eating for a week and a half.
scooby1961 3 years ago
i wan the lower abs how i get it ??? this only get upper abs zzz
chainkjr 3 years ago
That is so true. I quite often get pulled muscles, mostly it happens when I'm getting dressed/undressed (and it's not that I'm wearing some kind of latex creation- just normal clothes!)I pulled my shoulder pulling my belt tight as I was getting ready for my Aikido class, and once I dislocated my thumb PUTTING MY SOCKS ON!!! It happened once before, and I have no clue how. One time I hurt my knee without knowing how- it was bruised inside and the Dr said it might have dislocated and gone back in.
sexomaticveganfreak 3 years ago
OK, thats a good one - dislocating your thumb putting your socks on. I didnt think anyone could beat my "yawning" injury but I think you tied me with your sock injury :)
scooby1961 3 years ago
Yup, I can't stress enough the importance of practising safe socks :o)

Yo Scooby can you tell me how can I make a pull up bar!!?
vassilli19910666 3 years ago
I cant really give you any advice here because its so specific to where you are mounting it. Best is to use a garage if you have one. Check out my video "Vacation Workouts" to give you some other ideas about places near your home that you could do pullups

hello scooby its me again i checked out your website and i have realised the errors in my ways. i was mainly using the chest press and that was probably the reason for my chest being different.
im going to use dumbbells and other free weights and also use a barbell.
thanks for your help.
btw loving the website

thanks ill check out your website.
GlobalLEMMINGS 3 years ago
this is a little bit off topic. lol but ive noticed ive seen alot of ppl in shape like yourself that are bald. is there a certain reason or r u balding? sorry if it sounds like im being rude im just curious
Poont4617 3 years ago
No, its not rude. Actually, I'm not bald but I keep my hair clipped very close. I choose to keep my hair closely cropped for practical reasons. I exercise hours each day and sweat profusely and have always found hair a nuisance. Its also a lot easier to cut your own hair than go to get it cut. What can I say, I'm an engineer and its all about practicality.
scooby1961 3 years ago
Scooby you have too many videos I mean you need to put them in catorgies
You have Biceps then from no where Legs you need to put bi's n tri's in a arms section and so on with the other parts
Otherwise no one can be assed looking at all your videos
ownz275 3 years ago
If you go to my profile, there are playlists organized by bodypart. Am I missing something, is there a better way to organize videos on youtube? I'm still a bit of a newbie and would appreciate any youtube pointers.
scooby1961 3 years ago
Nope! Your playlist are fine! Keep it up and thanks for this new video dude. I've been following your workout routine sheet online and love it.

I agree with you on the cable crunches. Much better in my opinion than anything else (besides that weird machine that most gyms have that twist your torso with weights...). I always get a nice burn in my obliques when I do them! Still, I tried your oblique crunch and it works great! Thanks Scoob!
Enygma702 3 years ago
I'm editing my cable side crunch video now, I really like those!

Does your workout consist of these home exercises, or are you going to a modern gym?
jinn13 3 years ago
Depends. I go to a gym about 6 months out of the year. I've been working out at home since July 1st. I like the change of environment and my local gyms suck.
scooby1961 3 years ago
hey scooby, i have a different question; how do you work your glutes? what is a good, and fast exercise to work it?

EcuadorianBalla13 3 years ago
Who knows? First thing to do though is lose weight until your BMi is between 20 and 25
After that, it's time for strength training.
Jouwl 3 years ago
Definition of any sort is gained by decreasing bodyfat - more cardio and less food.

scooby you fucking retard.. you have the worst side abs ever.. stop telling me shits how eggs are bad to eat etc for abs.. my friend (bodybuilder) is eating eggs every morning and he has 10 times better abs then you!
Russisretard 3 years ago
Kid probably has the metabolism of Michael Phelps... he's only offering food advice, not everyone needs to take it. I am only 21, have that rocket metabolism and fill my diet with fat and carbs to keep me going. Most of his food advice is for those whom are completely out of shape or the metabolism of youth has stopped working for you. There will come a day when eating pizza and coney dogs, while drinking a 2 liter of Coke and Jack in it will start to add up. Lots enjoy the advice, don't hate

hey scooby ive been working out for about 1 year now, my muscles are well defined but my weight is still the same, can you give me some advice on how to gain more weight and muscle mass? thanks a lot scooby

You keep working out and stay very, very patient.
Evilcyber 3 years ago
Hey Scooby could you please tell me, what should I do for my abs, they are distorted little bit? Will they get straight or is it forever? Thankyou for you answer beforehand.
Renotech 3 years ago
Abdominals really are left up to genetics. Some people have the washboard, some people have alternating abs, and some people have something in between. There's really nothing you can do. I hope that answers your question, in case Scooby doesn't get to.

i have a Q for ya scooby. when i work out i find that i hardly ever get muscle burn but i kinda run out of energy around 8-10 reps. i used to do alot of endurance when i was a kid, is that why or am i doin somthing wrong?
themysteriouscow 3 years ago
hello scooby how many rep or set doing in day

scooby why is it when ever i do the side crunches (50) then the second i stop i feel like i could do 1000
AltonFightLeague 3 years ago
hey scooby, how are you, how many hours a day do you think you should sleep a day for a bodybuilder?
ksa5223 3 years ago
depends on your age...
YouAteMyChicken 3 years ago
Ideally as long as you can. You will wake up naturally when you have had enough sleep. IMHO, alarm clocks are the #1 cause of stress in this country.
scooby1961 3 years ago
Couldn't agree with Scooby more here.
Alarm clocks are artificial, unnatural and recent.
I stopped using mine about a year ago. I wake up naturally about half an hour before I need to in order to get to work on time.
Had to adjust my going-to-bed time until I got it right. Now much more relaxed.
tonycatman 3 years ago
That's a pretty good piece of advice, especially for those who never heed their body's messages about not getting enough sleep.

scooby,
um...i want a forearm exercise for dumbbells as i am new to this and only have them..

the reverse curls do your forearm and dumbbell hammer curl. ive never bothered doing them because everything seems to hurt your forearms and mine am massive...

I like the beach idea. Soft ground might even be better. Normal crunches on my floor end up hurting my spine so I'm forced to use a pillow which screws up my form. Catch 22...
GhostSeraph 3 years ago
if they hurt your spine then your doing them wrong, your probably lifting your head up rather then keeping it in place (i used to that, it killed) just keep your neck straight and it shouldn't hurt, but thats just from personal experience :)
Greysonwolf14 3 years ago
Thanks for the tip. I do tend to bend my neck since my abs are one of the weakest muscle groups on me. Also thanks to Scooby. Great videos.
GhostSeraph 3 years ago
A carpeted floor should offer plenty of cushioning for these. There are no pressure points as you have a lot of contact surface with the floor.
scooby1961 3 years ago
I'll focus on proper form rather than quantity. I'm trying to get myself in proper shape for a PFT so I'm rushing myself through things when I shouldn't. Thanks.
GhostSeraph 3 years ago
Geh... I dont like these, cant wait till you do your cable side cruch video.

scooby1961 3 years ago
Hey Scooby, I have a question I hope you can answer. When I work out I never know how many repetitions I should do, I usually do 5-10 reps with 3 sets of high weight but I don't know if I am maximizing my muscle building potential. Any thoughts?
xodiak101 3 years ago
I think hes stranded on a tropical island, and hes trying to escape by building a plane in his garrage, but he wasnt stronge enough to build it with his hands, so he had to get stronger. so he flew hans over to teach him some things about working out. he then got stronger and more educated then hans so he shoved a banana in his face... and that is why he shoved a banana in his face :D
