  • Oh and btw the scene in the Bank Dick where W.C. Fields gets hit with the ketchup bottle is so funny. I was glad to see it in your list. Shemp is in it and W.C. Fields has a very funny question for him. The chase scene is over the top. Thanks for the list.

  • @plasticglassonion222 Was I in here last night and did I spend $20 was one of the best lines in any movie. Shemp was wonderful in so many movies. Thanks.

  • I concur with many titles although I am a big fan of Baby Doll, The Last Picture Show, Paper Moon, The Third Man, The Good Earth and Paths of Glory oh and Hobson's Choice and Lifeboat Strangers on a Train seems like most of these are b/w God's Little Acre Citizen Kane

  • @plasticglassonion222 Actually I probably should do a video abou best movie music. The Third Man would be very highly ranked. It was a great film. Lifeboat is one I want to buy and watch again. It had so much significance and most of the cast would be unknown today. Hitchcock was a master director. I have bot watched Baby Doll since it first came out. It was great. Thanks.

  • great list man.

  • @gondule Thanks.

  • i like his taste

  • Thanks.

  • I enjoyed listening to this. Maybe 1/2 of these I have heard of a lot, though I have seen few if any of these. I guess I have heard of many of these a lot because lots of people love them. I like the titles that don't sound as common. Makes me happy for some reason.

  • @waterwixxxer Thanks. I did like the movies that had good titles. The current titles like Precious or classics like Harry Potter or Alice in Wonderland do not have the intensity of something like Rebel Without a Cause or Treasure of the Sierra Madre. When I heard those titles I wanted to see the movies.

  • Buffalo 66 isn't bad, but it isn't exactly that classic feel. Not a big name movie either.

  • @Featureman I agree. The great titles added something to the movie which made it more classy. Thanks.

  • It's great to see someone over 27 years old on youtube!

  • Thanks. It is fun to be here. I wish they had this in the 1950s.

  • Invasion of the Body Snatchers! The first horror movie my parents let my watch, and it's still one of my all-time favorites. I was also glad to the Wax Museum in this list.

  • Thanks. Invasion... really worked on many levels, acting, story, direction and just a great look at the 1950s cars and styles. I did watch Wax Museum in 3D when it first came out. Vincent Price was always fun to watch even when he was especially evil in his role.

  • Great list but it missed my favorite - Dr. Zhivago

  • Thanks. I missed seeing Dr. Zhivago. I am sure it deserves a place here from all I have heard about it.

  • great list. I love the 3 stooges films and the comedians of their times :) Film makers can't really put out good comedy any more like they did back them :( Sadly it's kinda true.

  • Thanks. I love the old movies that were good. Comedies and noir and sci-fi and horror and drama. You are right about the funny movies not measuring up to the old comics.

  • I am a very BIG fan of laurel and hardy,,they are just simply exilent iv got the dvd boxset with the 21 discs in. PURE CLASS

  • They were so very great. There was a short movie they did once where they were caught in a traffic jam and everyone gets into a big fight and they tyear the cars apart. I loved those crazy things they would do. Thanks.

  • Another favourite film of mine is Rear Window with Jimmy Stewart.

I just got a boxset of Hitchcock movies for Christmas, so I'm working my way through some old favourites.

Hope you had a good Christmas.

  • Rear Window is great. I recently watched Diabolique (1955 version) which Hitchcock wanted to direct. It is black and white with two female leads. I can imagine a Hitchcock version with Grace Kelly and Kim Novak. The 1955 movie is excellent in a Hitchcock way. Thanks.

  • Thanks.

  • Nice list! I don't see too many references to The Flim Flam Man - an unknown classic by George C. Scott.

There is a 1980's song by Frankie Miller called "Angels with Dirty Faces" - I did not realize that it was about a movie.

  • The movie was a black and white gangster classic. The theme which carried through to the end was unique for that style of movie. There was an actor named Frankie Burke who played the James Cagney character as a teen ager who was so good at doing Cagney it ranked as one of the best performances I have ever seen. You can read about Frankie Burke at imdb. Thanks.

  • lol bank dick

  • Yep. I ordered that recently. I couldn't find it for free so I shelled out a few bucks for it. It has some good lines in it. Thanks.

  • Epic List Tom! You have beautiful taste in movies.

  • Thanks, Andy. I would guess many of your favorite films are favorites of mine.

  • That is a hell of a list,Tom.

I've only watched a couple of those, but I might also try the others. Thanks.

    Alex.

  • Thanks, Alex. If you have not watched Blazing Saddles, that would be one you probably would like. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956 version) is black and white, but great. Have fun there.

  • Peter Sellers is so one of my favorites. Pink Panther was the best one. But I also love his impressions. I've a few favorites and some that are not really but like watching them. I suppose you'll watch your favorites this christmas. That would be something to look forward to I'd say.

  • Thanks. Peter Sellers was so great. I enjoyed the way he could become different characters in the same movie, like Dr. Strangelove. Being There was also great. Pink Panther was wonderful. I do intend to watch some of these movies this week.

  • Was that in ascending order or descending order?

  • Rebel Without a Cause is probably my official favorite movie, but all the others are listed just as I was remembering them. I would have a hard time listing any of them as being more favorite than the others. Some are great to watch alone, others are better with a big audience. I thought of trying to list them in an order but it was too hard to do. Thanks.

  • I have to agree with you Rebel without a Cause, although it's not my top fav. My problem is there would be so many foreign films in the mix people might think I'm nuts.

  • There have been great films from other countries. I am familiar with many british movies and a film I believe was French, Diabolique, which would easily be in my top 100.

  • Thanks! You've given me some great ideas for future viewing.

How do you rate Citizen Kane (1941)?

  • Thanks. I just ordered The Resurrection of Bronco Billy and Tiger Bay and Inherit the Wind which is not on this list but I want to get it.

  • Ah, OK. Enjoy!

  • Hi. I just noticed your reference to Citizen Kane. It was a great movie especially in its use of new camera angles and great acting and directing. I watched it only one time. It is number one on many lists but I have never been a big fan of it to the extent of wanting to watch it repeatedly. It is great though.

  • Thanks for your thoughts. I think you summed it up; it's very obvious that Orson was experimenting, and possibly 'that' is why it is loved. Against the refined styles it influenced, Citizen Kane is a novelty, kinda. :)

  • I LOOOVVEEE ALFRED HITCHCOCK --

    Rear window (AWESUM)

  • I totally agree. Thanks.

  • great vid as always

  • Thanks. I hope all is well there.

  • good taste!

  • Thanks. You make excellent movies also.

  • Thanks for sharing Here are my favorite comedy films: Sons of the Desert She Done Him Wrong It's A Gift Animal Crackers A&C Meet Frankenstein City Lights The Cameraman Safety Last ~Max
  • Thanks. I have not seen City Lights or The Cameraman. It has been years since I saw She Done Him Wrong. Mae West was great in many of her movies. Laurel and Hardy and The Marx Brothers could always make me laugh.

  • We share the same taste in comedy... Here are my favorite dramas: The Champ (Wallace Beery Jackie Cooper) Little Ceasar Al Quiet on the Western Front Wuthering Heights Spellbound Count of Monte Cristo Camille Now Voyager Mildred Pierce The Public Enemy ~Max
  • As far as the horror genre is concerned... Dracula Frankenstein The Mummy The Invisible Man Bride of Frankenstein The Black cat The Raven Son of Frankenstein The Wolf Man Creature From The Black Lagoon White Zombie ~Max
  • Those are all fun to watch. I was surprised several years ago when I watched Bride of Frankenstein again. It is an excellent movie with great special effects. I love the sci fi and horror movies.

  • Hi

    Featureman...

I would say that "Bride of Frankenstein" is one rare case where the sequel was superior to the original (both were of course directed by James Whale...as was "The Invisible Man") If you look at my profile page, you will see a comprehensive listing of my favorite classic sci-fi films...mostly from the 1950's.

    Pax,

    Max

    Thanks for the fun upload.:)

  • Thanks. Nice list of great movies on your profile page. The Thing ( the original ) had one of the scariest scenes in it that I have ever experienced in a theater. It really worked. I am considering doing a top 100 bad movies and top 100 sci fi and so on.

  • Thanks. Of the ones I have seen, Mildred Pierce is one I could watch over and over. Little Caesar was brilliant but many of the titles I have not yet seen. I have to catch up. This gives me some titles to look for.

  • My Top Ten BEST Movies ever (which is slightlly different than my Favorite All Time Movies.).... 1. On The Waterfront The Straight Story Driving Miss Daisy The Third Man The Treasure of the Sierra Madre The Milagro Beanfield War Jaws Forrest Gump Glory All That Jazz (Nice to see you include M -- I was tempted to include it, but haven't seen it since late 80s. Fritz Lang's first sound movie, and sound has never been used more effecttively.)
  • I have tried to answer this several times but the page keeps refreshing and I lose the message. Thanks. I have not watched Straight Story or Driving Miss Daisy or Forrest Gump or Glory. I love the other movies. Marlon Brando was sensational so often. Roy Scheider reminded me of Rod Taylor. He made great movies but did not enjoy celebrity status because he was ignored by the media for some reason.

  • You will LOVE The Straight Story - and based on his career journey, will likely really appreciate seeing Richard Farnsworth quielty light it up the screen. (Beautiful soundtrack you'll likely buy afterwards, too. Right up your alley.)

Also, since Roy Scheider played the lead in two of my 10 Best, I guess I'm in agreement w/you on his underrated skills.

Also, gotta say, I think you're the only person on the planet who has not seen Forrest Gump -- a special film and Hanks is amazing in it.

  • one of My favourite films is "High Noon" with Gary Cooper, - a great Western!

    -John

  • Thanks. I wish they still made the great Westerns. We need new cowboy types. I loved some of the Western faces like Randolph Scott, John Wayne, William S hart, Tom Mix and Gary Cooper.

  • It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World is one of my favorites. I also enjoyed Singin' in the Rain and The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

Have you ever seen Inherit The Wind?

  • I have not seen Inherit the Wind, but I shall watch that sometime soon. Spencer Tracy and Frederick March are among my favorites. I was just looking at the cast at imdb and all I can say is, "Wow!" Thanks.

  • ALL Spencer Tracy movies are worth seeing -- especially Inherit the Wind and Guess Who's Coming To Dinner.)

  • Thats a great list!

airplane! is probably my favorite spoof of all time, i also love naked gun.

one of my favorite movies of all time is 'the sting' with robert redford, i absolutely love that movie.

also the invasion of the body snatchers (original) is one of those films that whenever its on i have to watch it, every time..

    Merry Christmas = )

  • Thanks. I was an extra in Naked Gun. A fellow with whom I often worked who also was an extra, was Guy Wade, who used the name Guy Way when he acted in movies. He was in two of your favorite films as an actor. Invasion of the Body Snatchers he was the police officer who saw the girl scream when a dog almost was hit by a car. In Sting he was a pit boss or dealer. He also worked with me in Sting 2. I do not know if he is still alive.

  • @Featureman

Wow, thats incredible. I will be sure to look out for that scene the next time i watch it.

I'll also definitely be looking out for you in Naked Gun. =)

  • In Naked Gun I am the tall guy in the crowd who reacts to Leslie Neilson when he shoots at his own car after it rolls away. The airbag explodes and the car is on fire as he walks into the police station. Guy Wade was a great person to work with and very modest.

  • @Featureman

LOL yeh i know the scene well, its a great and funny moment.

  • I LOVE A FACE IN THE CROWD.

It's Andy Griffith screaming for two hours. Its great.

  • Thanks. I saw that when it first came out and I used that movie as a blueprint for my show business career. It worked well for me, but much of it would seem dated today to younger viewers. That is one that could be remade if the right cast were assembled, but not the red carpet type celebs that get so much attention. Maybe Johnny Depp, I don't know.

  • Nice list, wonderful films. Did you work on any of those movies? What are you favorite films in the last thirty years? The average high school student wouldn't know any of those actors in your top 100 list. Actors today have a shelf life about as long as rap artists. There are no longer any stars, only celebrities...

  • Thanks. I did work as an extra in one scene of Naked Gun. I have worked in some good movies like Melvin and Howard and Back to the Future which could easily make a top 100 list, but I did not put them on this list. For young viewers I highly recommend any Humphrey Bogart or William Holden movie as an introduction to the Golden Era. For the girls, Marilyn Monroe was actually a wonderful actress in many of her films.

  • You have very similar taste to my dad. A lot of these would be on his top 100 list. I love To Hell and Back. It's not often you see the actual guy playing himself in a biopic. Didn't get to finish the video, because I have to work, but I figured I'd leave a quick comment. Not sure if you included the African Queen on this list, since you're obviously a Bogart fan, but that would make my top fifty or so. Along with American Graffiti. My favorite movie is probably Willow at the moment. : )

  • The only other movie I know where someone played themself in a biopic is I Am The Greatest with Muhammed Ali who was Cassius Clay at the time, I believe, but it was not interesting like To Hell and Back. American Graffiti was great, especially with the songs in the soundtrack. I have not seen Willow. Thanks.

  • Could I get that list in writing? My kids and I would love to use it!

  • I will eventually put the titles in the sidebar. Thanks. There are some good movies there for Christmas gifts if you give DVDs.

  • I didn't realize it was so hard to find some of the movies you mentioned. I've seen a few of them you listed, but now I have a great list to help me pick out other good movies to watch. Thanks Tom. Have you seen The Magnificient Seven? I really enjoy that film.

  • Yes. Magnificent Seven was great. I was in the Army with Robert Vaughn who was in that one. Yul Brynner was always good. Thanks.

  • Good list, Tom, with some of my favorites on it, too -- but I know what you mean that the list could change in five minutes -- although my #1 favorite movie of all time hasn't changed since I first saw it -- Groundhog Day with Bil Murray -- and there are some actors that I like all their movies, even the stinkers, like Bette Davis, Marlon Brando and -- god forgive me, Keanu Reeves -- hahahahaha!

  • Thanks, Liz. Groundhog's Day is definitely one of my favorite movies. Bill Murray is so very funny in a likable way. I am also a big Brando fan. I especially liked One Eyed Jacks with Brando in a Western. Bette Davis was always wonderful to watch even when she was not talking. I have not watched a lot of Keanu Reeves movies but I enjoyed what I have watched him acting in.

  • my favorite is "On Golden Blonde" lol "Merry Christmas"

  • Thanks. Merry Christmas. I will have to look for that one. That s

  • I accidently hit post comment... I was about to type "That sounds like a David Letterman report of Times Square movies. Thanks. Merry Christmas.

  • I think I've seen about 65% of the films you mentioned and agree with everyone of those.

  • Thanks. Some of the movies I mentioned are very hard to find. There are many other great ones I have missed completely.
