Wow, didn't know everybody on here marched BD. Yeah, we should really show this asshole up and take him down a notch. Fuck him for trying to teach something.
I'm sorry but I'm a traditional snare drummer and I'm in 3 bands I've been playing for 4 years, and every band I've been in they all tell me to keep my hands at the same height and i mean both hands. The person that is mainly talking this is just a little thing I noticed but rolls you always seen to keep your right hand up and you tend to bring your left hand down.
All of you that are bitching should make your own instructional video series. If you are a beginner this could be useful info. If you aren't a beginner then you don't need to watch this anyway
I would like to see anyone of you douchebags make an instructional video on how to clean rolls throughout a snareline it is extremely hard especially when you get new people on a snareline who have never played with that line before and dont have that chemistry yet. Good video not great but hey at least somebody is trying to help people out
actually its not hard if you practice. this just sounds horrible and i already did make a video! i play snare and did tenors for the cavaliers so i know what im talking about! this guy is garbage!
@bulldog7968 this guy could not play in time if he had a damn recording showing him what it meant....listening in is the worst idea since the invention of a sling, play a roll in time, and you have no reason to listen, I don't play with a met or listening in because I can count to my book and exercises and play in time, only way to be the best....ask Dave Oriente how many times he "listened in"....I dare you...
I've been playing snare for 6 months...I'm a sophomore in highschool. I picked it up at the en of y freshman year and I play for hours upon hours a day....and I'm this video sucks.....I've seen a lot of professional lines and I know that different lines have different techniques sometimes but...wow...i didnt know there was a technique that made all of your rolls sound so crappy and your heights be uneven and your attacks sound like crap.
i like how at 1:14 he said "you have to be consistent." then preceeded to play quite the opposite. And then At the end he showed us an example of a 'locked roll'. The whole time i thought locked meant clean, guess i was wrong.
lol i love all the comments. At least he's trying to help other people get better. So what if his tehnique wasn't perfect. This whole video wasn't all about technique. It was about what not to do when playing triplet rolls. His info is legit. I bet half of you guys can't even play a damn triplet rolls exercise without any ticks. A lot of you guys just need to grow the hell up and instead of bitching about this guy go and pick up a pad and stop sucking.
its not too tough to do something horribly, then do it a little better as an example of what is right. you should be able to do something almost perfectly before you try to tell others what to do
Hey guys, I only played snare in highschool for two years and now i'm making mediocre lessons for 6th graders. I think I'm going to call it "Drumming With Fonda."
you would think in a video trying to teach about locking rolls, the people doing the teaching would actually be able to lock rolls. And, for that matter, be able to attack together. Which didn't happen once. The last time came close though. Who the hell is this guy anyway?
@kas36spires Heights are obsolete. Try going to a few Glassmen camps, they're using a new technique that's going to catch on fast. It's about the type of sound you produce from the drum, not just how loud or how hard you're hitting the drum. They don't stress heights, they stress dynamic levels. So if one guy plays piano at 3 inches and another guy does it at 4 inches, then it's ok, as long as it sounds the same. It's also way better for your hands than any other technique I've seen.
@quadmaster89 yeah its not actually that new. Went to some colts camps this year, they are using it. Phantom at least to a certain extent. Also pioneer used it for a while. And either way, it doesn't mean heights are obsolete. You can't get carried away. Shit still has to look clean. If you are on the field and playing a roll or something, and the judge is far enough away that he can't hear that well, and the heights aren't matching at all, he will automatically assume it's dirty.
@Chops321 If everyone plays the same, everyone will sound the same.
For anyone who reads the above sentence and somehow interprets "the same" as saying "different" - please don't try to argue with me, I won't respond.
Glassmen aren't the only corps (nor Colts) teaching this. Coats, BD, Bluestars, Phantom, SCV... basically anyone you watch that doesn't look like they're on roids - they're using the philosophy of dynamics > heights. They just teach that heights should indicate dynamics.
@cwsmith73 I'm not exactly sure what you mean... How could I argue I interpret "the same" in such a way that it would actually mean "different"? I agree though. If people play the exact same (or damn near close) of course they will sound the same. And you seem to be saying, at least to an extent, what I am saying. Glassmen or Colts are certainly not the only corps using the technique. However, if heights indicate dynamics (and yes they DO teach that) wouldn't it be more like heights=dynamics?
@Chops321 Some people will read "the same" and picture two squares of different sizes. While both are squares, that does not make them congruent.
And a cold CAN indicate meningitis, but doesn't have to. Heights usually indicate dynamics (volume) but it's possible to play high and weak, as it is low and strong (too strong, that is.)
@cwsmith73 I think for the most part, when people read "the same" they would picture two squares of the same size. If they already know a square is what is being talked about, then when someone mentions another square that is the same, it is implied that they are the same size (at least thats the way it seems to me). @Friedoyster3@Friedoyster3 in my line we pick up the stick and everyone licks it top to bottom and then when it gets back to the first guy,he licks the WHOLE stick for 4 minutes, then we do 100 push ups then 40 laps i think
@Koshimae217 So you're saying you like it? You like licking drumsticks for 4 minutes, doing 100 push ups, and 40 laps? Instead of learning how to play your drum. That's too much, but only because it's a waste of time. You can have discipline without cruel punishments!
