@fajitaboys totally not true, this kid was written in the book, so it wasn't a spur of the moment thing. He was actually a jr. high school kid they made up to look like an inbred. He's a hell of a banjo player.

Yes, he does actually play. Still does today, too. Saw a pic of him online somewhere today, still looks pretty much the same.  But that is not him playing the song heard, Weissburg and Mandell recorded it for the movie.
