Christianity and it's sacred texts makes a number of faith based claims that are not backed by evidence...it lends itself to the kinds of criticisms. I make in my videos. .
As far as I'm concerned this debate is over as soon as one of these deities manifests itself in some way that can't be explained away with science and does not require faith.
If a person is truly a Christian, he/she will never depart from the faith “…for if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us…” If a person who claimed to be a Christian denies the faith, he/she was not truly a Christian. “They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us…their going showed that none of them belonged to us.” No, there is truly no such thing as an ex-Christian.
First John 2:19 declares, “They went out from us, but they did not really belong to us. For if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us; but their going showed that none of them belonged to us.” This Scripture makes it abundantly clear—there is no such thing as an ex-Christian.
@Prov358 Great psychology, isn't it? The men who wrote the bible were ignorant of many things, but not about how to manipulate people. They were masters at it. They knew how to use a carrot and a stick. How to use fear and hope. How to cover all the bases. Of course there are ex-christians. Don't believe the propaganda that tells you otherwise. It's bull, just like most of the crap in the bible.
"LAW" is not the word to use in this context. the hebrew word Torah is more acuratley translated to guidence or instruction. i wound suggest crossing out the titles "old and new testament" and replacing them with old and new "instruction"
@KaylaCloee12 'Law' is just fine, it was in 'commas'. Religion does not fulfil the WAYS of Jesus is just as good. THAT'S the point. Religion is corrupt. Pedantic people are always missing the issue, mindlessly nit-picking on irrelevancies. whilst walking around with a big fat plank in their own eye, eg, i dont think "Wound" is the right word in this context. "The body of Christ is way too latched on to the Republican Party?" Bollocks!!! Sorry to inform you man, but there are more countries in the world than USA, and Christianity is a whole lot older than the States, in case you didn't know that there.
It's a poor argument attributing the Law of Moses to Jesus, when Jesus forgave the adulterous woman, accepted the harlot, and touched the leper. The SIMPLE answer: Jesus fulfilled the Law, but made a way that sinners like I may be saved.
I haven't quite finished: You say, "Tell your church and your pastor...(re: tithing)" You just agreed with the original speaker about institutionalised religion. Jesus Himself said, "You pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith." So don't blame Jesus.
One more thing. You constantly giggle as you speak - does that suggest a lack of assurance in your own opinion, or a blatant contempt for the beliefs of others???
That's my point so many Christians talk about grace and "personal relationships" but I have a hunch that if a bunch of people decided that they don't need to bribe God for his love that as fast as you can recite John 11:35 pastors would be preaching about tithes and we'd see alot of preachers telling their churches to "camp out" in verses in Malachi.
I laugh because once I start poking at the theology, and seeing the flaws in it the absurdity becomes very amusing.
Obviously I meant the U.S! What other country would the refrence even make sense. Jeff was refrencing the fact that some equate Republican and Xian.
My law of Moses point is valid because according to the law of Moses (which Xians believe God created) you do stone adulterous people. Since Jesus and the Father are two parts of the same triune being that would have to mean a deity who is creating strict laws and then centuries later providing a cure of "grace"
Im in recovery now for over ten years and I KNOW that I was in slaved to things such as drugs, unhealthy relationships with women, and because of the teaching of Jesus I no longer am a slave to such things, you take on slavery I find interesting we as a people are not free I agree but with Christ Jesus I have a choice in who is my master and I wouldn't have it any other way,, this is not an attack just a comment with my view point
I believe Jesus is the son of GOD, and I have dedicated my life to service to others in a very healthy way in feeding the poor and teaching a celibate recovery class, and i would never speak ill of anyone who made the choice not to give there :10%" that is a choice every person has the right to make . I have made these choices not because of some doctrine that was taught to me by a church but because of the impact the reading of the holy bible and Christ Jesus has made in my life
I don't get it why this thing is so popular. The poem is mediocre at best, and what it's saying is nonsense. The intentions in the first two minutes sound nice, but in the second half he refutes everything he said before. He hates religion, but loves Jesus, the church and the Bible.
What is Christianity but religion! He seems well-intentioned, hating the hypocrisy and the greed of a certain part of the religious. But as long as religion sets the standards, nothing will really change in society.
Excellent response. To sum up the principle problem at the heart of Jefferson's point: You can hand me a venomous snake and insist that it isn't a snake, because you call it a dove, but if it has scales, a long, sinuous body, reptilian eyes, fangs and a forked tongue, that is: all of the characteristics that constitute snakehood, I'm gonna regard it as a snake, no matter what prefer it to be called.
I have always found that "personal relationship" not religion line to be totally absurd. Religion is a set of beliefs and practices, usually in regards to a deity or deities. They go to church, observe communion, practice baptism, and thoroughly dogmatic in their beliefs. They merely replaced the old legalism, with a new legalism of unyielding faith that only pretends to not be legalism. However, in fairness to Paul most scholars have come to reject the majority of anti-women statements ...
@mojosideburns traditionally attributed to him. Most are found in the deutero-Pauline books and there is reason to believe even in the books he genuinely authored later scribes edited some of his words to fit their preconceptions. If you have not read Misquoting Jesus by Bart Ehrman yet, I HIGHLY recommend it. Amazing book. Great vid. Subbed. Peace.
Freedom? There is no freedom with Jesus. This just goes to show just how screwed up the biblical doctrine of salvation really is. It is designed to evoke "positive" emotions about accepting Jesus Christ while hiding all of the real underlying schemes. The *only* way to heaven is through *Jesus*. Jesus died for *you,* (although you did nothing) and you are therefore forever indebted to him. It sets you up to worship him from the beginning.
That's the thing about the bible...interpretation is a huge issue :)
As a kid, I did attend a holiness church that emphasized the importance a "personal relationship" :)
However, my world was turned upside down as teenager after attending a seventh day adventist church They are notoriously legalistic and at that point I realized it's all about interpretation. You can make the bible say anything you want because there is a plethora of contradictory material to choose from.
I didn't find his video to be at all honest, or sincere. Maybe it's my cynicism, but to me it seemed like cheap, intentionally manipulative, dishonest propaganda.
He makes a distinction, but never explains what the difference is between. Loving church, believing in the bible, and believing in Jesus on the one hand, and religion on the other. As far as I can see they are synonymous. I mean at first I thought he was making a distinction between the church, and simply following the teachings of Jesus, but it becomes clear that isn't the case. Of course the mindless thumbed it up because they assumed that without listening.
Jefferson Bethke's video to me seems to suffer from the no true Scotsman fallacy with a splash of S.P.A.G. (Self Projection As God) There are so many other flaws trapped in his video that I would have to write a book to explain them all. With that said he did make some good points as well.

@MrRedthief That's stupid. "Belief in a god is immoral" that is. Just because someone believes in god doesn't mean it's something they'll try to " force on the rest of us.". Many people, actually most people outside of America and the radically islamist countries in the east, don't try to force others to believe what they do. That sentence you uttered in the beggining is a ridiculous as creationists saying evolution is false because it's just a theory.
@gilless429 Wow! are you blind and stupid? Just look at any history of religion at any time period in any country. Then ask most any true believer and at a minimum they will shun you which is a way of forcing it upon people. Tell your family members that you are an atheist and see what happens.
@MrRedthief Shuning someone is a way of forcing stuff upon them ? You know the definition of the word right ? Because as far as I know avoiding people is not trying to force views on them. I mean what freaky universe do you live in ?
Then, my parents, sister, grandmother, etc, most of my family, knows I'm an atheist. You're so full of stereotypes... Just because some people happen to be radicals, fundamentalists, etc, doesn't mean everyone is. Atheist or not you're as close-minded as any fundie.
@gilless429 Shunning a person because they are an Atheist is a action of prejudice that the theists use against us. For most atheists coming out of the closet is a nightmare and impossible if they want to keep their family and friends connections.
To me that is the force I am talking about as at a minimum.
Just talk to any Atheist that is trying to come out.
@MrRedthief Shuning someone because they are an atheist is a discrimination against atheists, yes. But in no way is it forcing stuff down people's throat. If you can't see the difference between someone avoiding you because they realised you're an atheist and someone trying to force you to stop being an atheist, that's entirely on you. ...cont...
@MrRedthief 2nd part (read the 1st): Yes, there are lots of atheists who have trouble coming out of the closet because of the expected reaction of their family, friends etc.
But, first most atheists outside of America (and mostly islamic countries) don't have that problem. Shit happens but most families outside of those places aren't that discriminatory of atheists. For family members who would or do discriminate toward atheists, that makes them dumb and ignorant. But not their belief immoral.
@gilless429 You are forgetting the catholic South and Central America or Christian African (they kill witches) countries. Also India with their caste system. All based on lies. Lies are immoral just ask any christian. It says so in their bible.
@MrRedthief In those countries people can shun a family member for being an atheist yes.
I won't adress the rest of your comment for a simple reason : that some people use their belief as an excuse to kill or otherwise hurt, even if they kill or hurt only because of their belief, doesn't mean everyone who holds a similar belief is as immoral. Some people who can be considered christians believe god wants them to kill witches. But most christians don't believe that. See the difference ?
@gilless429 Yes I know the difference but I have to base my comments on what I have experienced, not what you have.
Also, lately I tend to use terms and code words that the right wing christians use just so that they can understand. Sort of a "back at them" way of talking. I
