Nice and simple. Too simple for my taste. You left some artifacts on the horizon and didn't show how to fix these. Maybe you should do a series of HDR imaging from simple methods to more complex ones on real examples.
A little tip, when you move one image on the second, hold shift to automatically align the images.
It would be difficult to go into details why your brush tool wasn't available. I think that the easiest way for you to work with three images would be to work first with two, do what you need, then you flatten image as described in this tutorial, and then you bring the third image and again work with two images.
