For those talking about the warranty; in order to receive AppleCare (phone support, and warranty) the phone has to be activated and registered with a valid service provider through iTunes.

If you don't activate it, you have no warranty. If you activate it and then unlock it using a program (ie. dont open it up), your warranty still technically counts.

Though I work for AppleCare and we won't touch it unless it's registered on AT&T (we can check).

Your iPhone has to be registered with a valid service plan to be eligable for AppleCare (I work for iPhone tech support, I should know).

If you register it with O2 (in the UK, AT&T in the USA) and -then- unlock it, you'll be fine, because it's activated and has a valid service plan.
