  • This is not improvised is it? If not then that's some pretty crazy music to memorize and feel simultaneously!

  • @Carthsgtr

    you barely qualify as human

  • @DuskFiend

And you DO qualify as a wanker.

  • @Carthsgtr

diverge your energy towards justin bieber videos, would you?

  • @DuskFiend

As odd as it may sound, Bieber has a greater understanding and talent in music that this pretentious goat fucker may ever hope to.

I will repeat it again; this man may as well be playing random notes as these nonsensical rhythms and complete lack harmony and melody have NO musical merit what so ever. Talent? Maybe. Pretentious wank tard? I think that's pretty fucking obvious.

  • @Carthsgtr dude....you suck and you couldnt even play 10 seconds of this shittt!!!! 100000000x better than youre shitty dire straits cover. and cmon man!! at 4:05??????? you wish you could hammer like that!!! suck my kawk

  • @Carthsgtr at least try and listen to the music they are playing. It's obviously not improvisation the entire way through.

  • @Carthsgtr

I think what's pretty fucking obvious, judging by the way you speak, is that you're a pretentious wanktard. Maybe some people don't suckle the teat of harmony and melody exclusively? You're setting everything to an almost industrial standard. Yeah, money, etc. At least Mick's not so closed-minded and confined in his artistic tastes as yourself. You don't like it. Get over it. In all of his "talent and harmony", I don't give two shits about Bieber. You dont see me crying overit

  • @Carthsgtr i think trying to pass your comment off as an insightful, well researched, and credible critique on modern avant garde music is incredibly pretentious. there is plenty of harmony, rhythm, and melodic motifs in this song, but it happens at such a rapid pace that it's difficult for even the most attentive listener to identify what the hell is going on, and that's why i love it.

  • @Carthsgtr nah i just know more about music then you do.

  • @Carthsgtr That certainly was an intelligent sentence. Well, it's unfortunate you think this music is bullshit. I'm sure a lot of your favorite artists don't feel the same way.

  • mick barr is the fastest guitarist in the world hes insane

  • thats a big ass bass drum

  • is this tape in real time?

  • GAWD DAYUM !!!

  • im guessing zach is playing a double pedal, could someone please fill me in?

  • Actually, he's not. He plays with one bass drum and a single bass drum pedal, that fast bastard.

  • Two of the best shredders in the same room. Dangerous shit.

they've got to be pretty tired after

  • it just sounds like a guitar solo and a drum solo being played at the same time. Until you get to 4:30 at least.

  • this would be alot better if the disortion wasnt so obnoxious, if it wasnt all muddled together i think it would be easier to listen to and prolly sound pretty cool

  • This is cool but way to long.

  • yes

  • this is my favorite video to jack off to

  • Looking at it again, I think I get it now. There actually is a structure in the peice, and measures. They are difficult to discern, but they are there. It seems the guitar and drums are trying to play in perfect note-for-note harmony. Kinda weird, and kinda cool at the same time.

  • I think that's Zach Hill's philosophy about his drumming if I remember correctly. In Modern Drummer a while back he talked about how he saw himself more as a horn player or guitarist on the drums instead of someone who keeps time.

  • more noise please haha love it

  • sure this is fun, but it gets old fast

  • this is incredible. sticklers who don't like it are pimply guitar dorks and not musicians or artists. they should go back to satch.

  • I tried to appreciate this for art's sake, but at the end of it all, I have no idea what they are trying to say.

  • simply because they can. they probably think its funny

  • My favourite part of this video was.. 9:59

  • what a bunch of pussies on youtube my god. Fuck scales fuck song structure fuck harmony just watch in awe as these two men create these beautiful sounds. I love this shit.

  • make no mistakes about it. these guys are not fooling around. whether or not its music you listen to for enjoyment, they're playing extremely difficult compositions in sync with one another. somewhere around 1:50 its distinct enough to hear the drummer doing fills while the guitarist sweeps notes in perfect rhythmic harmony

  • omfg this is the worst thing I've ever heard. Like wow. ok you can play fast, but HOLY FUCK PLAY IN A SCALE OR SOMETHING FOR GODS SAKE! IT SOUNDS LIKE A RETARD ON SPEED IN TRYING TO PLAY GUITAR.

  • Play in a scale? tell that to Schönberg or Lutoslawski. Read something about contemporary music. By the way, both are dead... Keep riffing metalhead, do the helicopter

  • If this is what 'contemporary music' sounds like, I'll pass.

  • Comment removed

  • ......are you seriously judging everyone on earth who creates music right now by watching a single youtube video? that, my friend, is ignorant.

  • ... no? who said I was judging anyone, except this guitarist, who thinks that by playing as fast as he can, which admitedly is incredible, hes making music. this is not music. this is literally jerking off a guitar, and there is no melody, no composition, and no thought put into this.

  • oh, well contemporary music means any that is being written present day. techinically this is music. music doesnt necessarily have to have a melody, a distinct composition, or much thought put into it. if youre going to take that standpoint you could say that most metal isnt music either. i myself dont really enjoy listening to this. i love hella though.

  • we ALL love hella

  • I'm sure other people might enjoy this, but I just did not. And dont come telling me to fuck off and telling me this guy is amazing for playing that fast that long, i mean sure hes fast, but as far as i hear, hes not clean, i dont know if he does that on purpose or not. And I just think its kinda unmelodic, but hey, each to his own, i'll go listen to something else instead.

  • agreed.

  • I'm a fan of Hella myself, but this video is too much for me to handle. I prefer their songs as opposed to their fooling around.

  • yes i understand that its not difficult, n there jus seziuring out on the instruments the whole time! i seen these guys live once, it was good fer a laugh, there was a guy in yellow jump suit, freakin out on the keyboard, very haliarous, when i sit down on the toliet to take a shit, it sounds alot better then this

  • is this a shred fest? or is this rehearsed note for note jams?

  • Dude, my band totally covers this.

  • fucking sweet

  • You ripped off the t-pain's Low.

    Look it up

  • ....

  • God that sounds like horse garbage. What in gods name is that terrible sound.

  • Do you understand the sheer difficulty of playing for this speed for this long? If you don't like it, that's fine, but that doesn't mean other people can't enjoy it. Just avoid it for yourself.

  • cool , reminds me of ruins

  • this is just insaaaaaaaaaaaaaane. my mind is gonna blow up!

  • I actualy perfer the drummer in orthrelm... I don't know I like this and everything but he's got less of a wall of noise, and seemingly more inflection, specificaly in his high hat, especialy in the orthrelm thingy on teh youtube.

  • ...this is so weird...when I first heard Zach Hill I was like "wow he's the Mick Barr of the drums"...and now they're playing together as I watch...all I can say is...wankery music at it's best...

  • I was in class today, thinking about how awesome this was, and I threw up my mind.

  • If you think this is random noise and just wankery, get the album, "Shred Earthship". Give it two listens, a few tracks at a time. You still won't be able to sing a melody and barely a rhythm from it apart on a couple of occurences, but you'll understand what is their point.

It's kinda alien morse code, especially Zach Hill's right foot (bass drum). Sheets of sound wash over you, and it's really soothing. You can listen to it at low volume to go to sleep. It's anything but spastic and hectic.

  • Speaker of the truth.

  • i'm a fan of hella and all but this is kind of just noise. no offense.

  • expression. I was lucky enough to bear witness to the superhuman powers of Zach Hill when Hella played @ Local 506, a tiny club in Chapel Hill, NC. I've seen many excellent concerts, and I will see many more before I die; I am quite certain that I will never see a more mindblowing display of drumming skills. From the very first note played all the way up until the last - Zach Hill played with an unrelenting tenacity that seemed to break the laws of nature. I stopped by to see 2 good friends

  • if you close the comments then i can't chime in...First I would like to say that whoever made the comment: "I just came a rainbow" - sorry i am not going to wade through the negative tripe to look up the username - you Sir (or Mam) made my day! Had i been imbibing a beverage at that moment my computer monitor would be ruined. Secondly, I wanted to share with the folks who truly love music and are thankful that someone was captured a rare instance of musicians out on the frontier of a musical

  • i agree.

  • someone close the comments to this video so these ninnys can pay attention to the shredage rather than ramble about their insignificant opinions.

  • I'm sorry, yes this must be techinically VERY hard. But in the end it just sounds like crap.

  • That sounds like absolute shit. He needs to learn to not shred and actually play.

  • their cd is called Shred Earthship. haha He doesnt want to, but he could easily

  • Jesus christ, i just came a rainbow.

  • oh my god.

  • Man most of you little retards are so simple minded. Hate em cause u ain't em

  • There's a difference between being simple-minded and disliking this piece of shit. I listen to all kinds of jazz and progressive, and I still think this is terrible, so I don't think there is much of a correlation with being simple-minded. By the way, it's actually natural to dislike shit, so, go figure, not a lot of people like this.

  • Weasal Walters,

You are to form a trio with Mick Barr and Zach Hill, you are to destroy free jazz once and for all... Do it.

    Calbee

  • FTL

  • Never listen to metal. Listen to this. All the time, forever.

  • ZACH HILL IS GOD. Not really, but a damn good drummer he is.

  • OUCH! My stomach is killing me! 9:59 of it...they should be the poster boys for Jolt Cola. Gotta add this to my favorites.

  • It's not like this is the only thing these two have done. This was just kind of an experimental side project. It's interesting.

  • you're not supposed to be. either you appreciate the energy it provides or you go find a band with more 'point' style.

  • omg..mick barr is my new hero

  • the fucke dup part is that the guitarist has albums of this crazy shredding memorized...theres one with zach hill "shredearthship" but the crazier stuff is with a drum machine. octis....the best one is orthrelm...its fuckin crazy

  • if any drummer in the world is allowed to lose a drumstick, is mr. Zach Hill. What a blast!

  • okay...i give props to the drummer for playing so fast and clean for so long.theres definitely something to be said for that.

but i'm sorry- does anybody else feel like this is really just a lame, too long video of wanking off?

why would people go out and play this to others?

i dunno- i'm gettin nothin outta this. haha

  • EPIC WIN

  • The idea of that music is much better than the music itself. Still, you have to give props to the musicians, who so skillfully transpose the idea to their instruments.

  • I am amazed that he can play that fast for that long, But just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.

  • I am amazed that he can play that fast, But just because you can do something doesn't mean you should.

  • This is surely the natural progression of free jazz. Zach Hill is the most amazing piece of machinery ever built.

  • barr is buckethead

  • It's no wonder why Mick Barr is one of Behold... The Arctopus' greatest influences.

I want a high quality audio recording of this... lol

  • Wow.

    They are so goddamn talented.

  • That's some bitching stamina.

  • They are pouring this shit from the goddamn soul given to them from the great universe above. Shut the fuck up and enjoy.

  • No. Bad. Fucking bad. Bleeding from the ears bad. You see, it's like kind of like really easy math.

    Sounding good > technical prowess.

    Therefore this = bad.

  • america may still be redeemed if these guys play the superbowl halftime show

  • that would be the single-most greatest event ever. the world may end though.

  • hes not that good its not clean

    paul gilbert is way better!!

  • I would definitely head to a gig to see that in person.

  • bad.

  • you're bad.

  • of course its hard to listen to! of course its not melodic (in any conventional sense)! this isnt even necessarily about doing what one would connote as 'good music'! its challenging and intense.

  • I wonder if this could actually sound good if played in slow-mo

  • As an experienced musician I'm going to say no, not at all.

  • "As an experience musician..."

Awesome dude. Well, let me personally thank you for inspiring people with your groundbreaking music.

  • *experienced

Let me also note that regardless of your opinion on it, there's more happening here than most are ready to admit upon first listen. Maybe it's not your thing, but not just anyone could create this.

  • No. Bad. Fucking bad. Bleeding from the ears bad. You see, it's like kind of like really easy math.

    Sounding good > technical prowess.

    Therefore this = bad.

I can hit Randomize on a music program and memorize that and play it really fast, which is about all you'd need to write something similar, if not almost exactly like, this. But it sounds terrible. So I don't.

  • This is improvised music. They didn't "write" it. Also, I noticed you favorited a Les Claypool track. Les Claypool has done some work with this drummer...but I guess they're all just talentless hacks living it up by "randomizing" music in a program and playing it really fast. Get real, dude. Dream Theater? Give me a break. Pure wankery. No thanks. Go back to listening to Buckethead. His new track on Guitar Hero 7 is going to be incredible brah!

  • LOL

    LOL

    LOL

    LOL

    LOL

    LOL

So many things wrong with this comment, Not going to bother to take it apart. I hate guitar hero.

  • You're pretty thick, aren't you?

  • Depends what you mean by thick.

Look, if DT is pure wankery, (Even though they wrote and composed music for an entire fucking ORCHESTRA on their Score DVD/CD - which, if you'd given it any type of listen, you would know is NOT "wankery" - as well as having some songs with some instruments entirely absent, thus impossible to "wank" on) I don't even KNOW what to call this. I don't care if Claypool did anything with this drummer, it may or may not have been good, but that's not this. This is bad.

  • Dreamtheater writing for an orchestra is exactly what no one needs to hear. they're good at two things: practicing scales, and sucking their own egotistical dicks. everything they do is safe. they've never done anything with real meaning and they never will.

  • Sounds like someone made a 2-song judgment. Boy, I wish you knew what you were talking about. Obvious troll is obvious. Gtfo.

*Mike Portnoy is good at sucking his own egotistical dick -Fix'd

  • Writing for an ORCHESTRA doesnt automatically make you cool or a good musician.

plus I dont understand your absent wank statement? Are you saying the tracks would be in their least wanky forms if all the instruments were absent?

As its DREAM THEATER we are talking about I guess the answer would be yes.

This music is brave, technical, individual, and more futuristic than any of the cheesy 'fusion' crap I've ever heard

  • I never said writing for an orchestra made anyone cool, or that it makes them good musicians, but it certainly means that "wanking" is not all they are capable of. Apparently you didn't bother to listen to any of Score.

  • yeah, "cz838"...you'd better, uh, stick with DREAM THEATER bwahahah...they make nice, shiny recordings with lots of glossy synths tracked direct and no unpleasant...SURPRISES.

  • wow, uh ... good one? was there even a point to that?

I've yet to see anyone come up with anything other than "LoL DT am bad becouse shred LoL" rather than a logical thought process, but again that's not the point.

apparently everyone here sucks so I will now troll.

TROLL REPORTING. YOU ALL ARE GAY FAGGOTS.

  • not bad because shred, bad because pompous. And no I didn't bother to listen to "score" because I already know I don't like their ideas and style, whether they are playing violins, spoons, Banjoes or computers. BTW 'Troll' you must have heard this track what, 4 or 5 times by now, like it yet? ha ha, and yes, LoL

  • You're very confused and have the poorest of tastes.

    Enjoy Sammy Hagar!

  • why dont you just go prog crazy

  • haha, what kind of experience buddy??

    garage band??

    lmao

as an "experienced" musician, and an artist viewing and judging things for the general public, i'm going to say, THIS IS WAY MORE THAN YOU COULD EVER HOPE TO COMPREHEND YOU PATHETIC, LIVER TOUNGUED, BOTCHED CROW BRAINED LOBOTOMY PATIENT, FUCK.

    that is all.

  • Good job. It took you months to come up with that in response to what I said forever ago. Good one. By the way, you might want to consider forming logical thought patterns, instead of forcing yourself to have Tourettes.

  • haha, that's not the case my small brained friend, since i came across this video merely yesterday.

oh, sorry i can't control my tourettes ALL the time, SHIT BUZZKILL FUCK at least i'm not doomed to a fate where upon Dreamtheater is the end all be all in music, that's pathetic. don't get me wrong, not because they're not talented, they're fucking boring. where are the fruits of all this "training/knowledge" they posses? They're all talent with no soul; it's like saying a machine could make art.

  • You have no credibility in saying ANYONE is talented or talentless, your band is TERRIBLE and you had about 12 people standing around watching you idiots jump around and not play anything close to bearable, not to mention, the list of nobody-bands on your myspace that you love so much are all incredibly shitty, and yes, I know who most of them are. DT isn't the end-all be-all of music, but saying that their knowledge is fruitless is just saying you don't understand it at all on a musical level.

  • okay, let's examine this statement, "nobody-bands". If by "nobody-bands" you mean, anything that DOESN'T sound like another carbon copy of disturbed nu-metal, or is hopelessly cheesy and boring like Dream Theater, then yes I LOVE NOBODY-BANDS. especially the strokes, edith piaf, at the drive-in, bjork, the kronos quartet, the foo fighters, and refused who are all by your prior statement these "nobody-bands" that aren't famous and well respected, yet aren't acculterated pop trash

  • Bands that carry musical weight to their songs are those that are not "nobody bands". But, again, you have absolutely zero credibility because of your lack of knowledge of anything musical. Not to mention, I highly doubt you went through all of DT's 9 albums and said, "This is cheesy and boring."

Dissing DT is just dissing yourself for being such an idiot. It's not like they are my favorite band or some shit, so again I don't know what you plan to accomplish in saying all this pointless crap.

  • i have friends that absolutely love "DT" and obviously, since they've wanted to get me into it, i've been exposed to a lot of their "material".

but, i don't even need to listen to a fuckload of it, get me?

it's has no creative spark, passion, or any ounce of viable human playfulness, therefore it is utterly cheesy and depressing uninteresting.

i like machines, but not humans trying to be/emulate them, fucking pathetic.

    (continued)

  • (continuation)

oh, and my point was to prove that 1. you are hopelessly ignorant. 2. fishing erroneous, albeit hilarious commentary, out of you is quite satisfying 3. your rigidity, and lack of flexibility/plasticity of thought would nearly warrant you a mentally ill by todays psycho-analytical standards.

i have to stop, this is too fun.

    goodbye loser.

  • Still talking... still no credibility... still nothing useful to say...

  • acculturated*

oh, and i almost feel like i have to point this out but, you must obviously realize that your "point" is rendered utterly moot because, all the bands/ singers that i just mentioned in my prior comment, are DEFINITELY famous, well-respected, and wonderful examples of music.

i may enjoy the music in this video, or hella, pg. 99, botch, and saetia, but this is not the only shit i expose myself to.

finally, i'm very glad you don't like my band, good day.

  • 3:55...

  • that was probably one of the most annoying songs i've ever heard. I wish these guys could take their talents and just write good music

  • all of their songs are written.

  • nope, the songs on shred earthship is all stream of conciousness, like zack said in an interview, they are having a conversation

  • One of the funniest things I've seen in a while, lol...thanks for the laugh.

  • Sure they can play fast...but are they capable of playing music?

  • there are different kinds of music of which you might not be aware.

  • I just think it's cool that Zach can remember the songs.

It's probably easy though, since he made the songs.

  • There is no doubt that these guys are insanely talented and, as a drummer, I can only stare in slackjawed disbelief at Zach Hill's display of dexterity (not to mention stamina!).

I know these guys are all about pushing boundaries and taking things to the extreme and, on that front, they doubtlessly succeed. But I like my music to have melody and feeling and not just shredding. These guys make Dream Theater sound downright funky and minimalistic!

  • i dunno man, OV is one of the best minimalist records i've heard in a while.

and to back that one up wikipedia (dot) org /wiki/Minimalist_music#Minimalist_style_in_music

  • If Dream Theater is minimalistic, nothing is real anymore. DT makes these guys sound like foolish high school freshmen who just bought their instruments and started a band "for the lulz." Which, I wouldn't be surprised if they were.

  • The single greatest musical achievement might be going a little overboard. I mean these guys obviously have some kind of chops but is that everything?

  • clearly they are both very talented... but this is hard to listen to and i listen to a lot of death metal.. it's just a shredfest.. and while this would be great @ the end of the last song of the night to get off the excess energy.. i can't get into it.

  • AWESOME!!!

  • Is it "not music" because it's not what you like, or because it's not what our society is used to? How can you know their motives, ie. saying "they're just learning a trick and eventually they'll go back to normal music", what if this is their passion and you're wrong about them?

At any rate, whether you like the music or not, it seems senseless to put them down for it. Pushing boundaries is great, what harm could come of it?

  • Should people only commit time and energy to making music that they know will sell? I admire musicians who pursue their own interests at the risk of nobody

liking/buying it. A band I do love is Yowie. I can listen to that CD over and over and it sounds sick. I can hardly pin down a melody in the whole thing (the rhythms are pretty complex too but the sound is nothing as extreme as in this clip).

  • I want to know... who says that "music" has a discernible melody? That its rhythm has to be catchy? What is "music"? If you don't like this, I understand... I'd have a hard time saying I "like" it too, I mean it isn't very enjoyable to sit and listen to. But I can appreciate what they're doing, and the skill, precision, and endurance it takes to do it.

  • this is a pile of shit and i cant stop laughing!!

  • its real jazzy fresh

  • that was shit you convicts

  • That's one awesome explosion of noise !

  • this user needs to disable comments because clearly, none of these idiots have a slight iota of what they are talking about.

  • Catchy.

  • hahahahahahaha.

  • wow, sounds like just a bunch of noise.

  • Not to long ago, to play Jazz was to be musically open minded. And if we have ran out of ideas, and this is what we need to play/listen to in order to become "muscially open minded", then I think we don´t have a bright future to look forward to. That´s my two cents.

But hey, those guys are really tallented. Killer guitarist, killer drummer, love em to bits, but I think that this is nothing more then a cool prank that wont make any standing impression within the music scene.

    /Rickard

  • rickard the gimp

  • well that was a waste of space. jävla horunge.

  • fuck yeah
