Mr Paulsing, the tune comes from a British drinking song. It was a close tie with God Bless America when Congroess chose it because the other was to close to God Save the Queen. I served 34 years in the US Army, two combat tours and two purple hearts. I feel I have earned the right to express my opinion on our National Anthem--since I helped defend it.

Did you know that after both world wars, before every Broadway play or symphony concert, the audience sang three verses and most people knew them!! I totally agree with you. I don't particularly like our anthem as a musical work, but it is a very powerful patriotic statement and a true masterpiece. I know all 4 verses, but I'm sad to say I'm one of a handful. I think Sousa's Stars and Stripes Forever would serve as a better anthem, although lyrics probably could not be written for it, which I'm OK with, because singers today screw with them anyway by adding the random, "Yeah," or, "Baby."

You have to understand, it was written during the French Revolution, violence is the only way to overthrow the dictators. It does remind the future generations that their freedom did not come free of cost, it came with the blood of their ancestors. And take a good look at all the national anthems of every country in the world, I would say, 80% of them are violent and revolution in nature.

Secondly, America helped in rebuilding Europe because without it you had no exports. Thirdly, what you do for Africa is nowhere near what the old colonizing countries are doing.
