@rypt420 It's hard to describe the taste other that it is sweet and tart at the same time. I found frozen ones in a store in San Jose but it did not taste the same. They were smaller and imported from Thailand. Fresh Philippine mangosteen was the best.
I guess I got lucky I bought mangosteen here in San Leandro california I put 4 seeds in a wet napkin last summer and now it's about 6 inch tall, I plant it in a big pot
the mangosteen is my favorite fruit it's so good..even better than candy :) i tried it for the first time when i went to vietnam for the first time to see my relatives.
I have tried twice before to get seeds started here in the Caribbean without success. I just planted 10 more seeds. the main difficulty is the time it takes for seeds to get here by mail. viability of seeds is only a few day, couple weeks if kept moist. even if they sprout, I'll have a long wait around 7+ years before I get any fruit. But it will be worth the wait :)
So the tree takes 7+ years to grow? after the tree grows, the fruit will grow every year at certain times? or is it just a one time growing experience?
My mom used to know an old lady in Vietnam who took a hobby in growing mangosteens among other fruits. She said it took around 20 years for even a single fruit to ripen. The plant needs constant tropical humidity and temperature. You'll very much find it more easily in Southeast Asia, in countries such as the Philippines. Mangosteen is the "queen of fruits." (Also, durian is the "king of fruits.")
The mangosteen tree could start producing a few fruits in as little as 5 years under optimal conditions, but will only produce about a dozen or so. every year after that the yield will increase, a mature tree around 12+ years can make over a 1000 fruits . there is an excellent mangosteen manual, available free to download, in PDF do an online search for " DFID Mangosteen " you should come upon the web site. that 186pg pdf has everything about Mangosteeen cultivation.
@gilgamesh1962 ... i was just wondering, do you know how to tell when they are ripe? i just bought some from the asian market to try for the first time but have no idea how to tell when i should eat them! LOL ... =)
@oopspaw sorry for the delay in responding, I do not have any trees producing yet. if they are dark purplish on the outside they are ripe. they do not hold up long so eat right away. ( you only eat the white stuff inside around the seed ). I assume you have already tried the one you bought, how did it go?
@gilgamesh1962 ... thank you soooo much!!! they came in a sealed package with a label that said to refridgerate. so, they've been sitting in the fridge waiting for me! LOL ... after i read your note i took them out and tried them! they were really good!! the white fruit was sweet with a little tang and incredibly juicy! i would totally buy them again ... =D

@delli2011 Ah your referring to Xango or one of the knock offs, although Mangosteen has some antioxidants like many other fruits, there is nothing spectacular to it, the so called miracle properties would be in the outer shell which is extremely bitter. Mangosteen i want for the taste :) I have Açai palm which really does have high ORAC values, as does Goji, and Cacao, Im also after Cupuaçu ( Cacao Family ) already have Theobroma bicolor .
If you can get it through customs, it's best to buy the seedlings and grow them. Temperature and moisture is an issue for growing successful mangosteen plants.
@4urHealth No, my seeds never sprouted, i think it was probably due to the time it took them to get to me, the good news though is I was able to get 4 seedlings from a research center. so I am very happy about that.
I would LOVE to eat that fruit...It's hard to come by in the caribbean...Hopefully someday I'll be able to taste what's been called the most delicious fruit in the world.
Not only it is delicious, it is very high in antioxidant. It is juicy with incredible sweet and sour taste. Once you eat, you cant stop. I can eat 10-15 mangosteens in 5 minutes. You can buy canned mangosteen in the supermarket but I tried it before and it tastes difference when you eat fresh but at least you know how it tastes.
I envy you...

Mangosteens come in many shapes and sizes. This one shown here is excellent in shape and size, its fruit fully ripened.

Gosh, how would you describe the taste? I'd say a lot like litchi or a sweet white grape with a bit of cotton candy flavor to it.

The tree bears fruits every year. I was in the Philippines in August and they were harvesting them and sending off to the market.
