Subliminal, or reverse. Either way, all I know is that I broke more than a couple of cheap needles on my cheap record players back in the mid 70's playing this. Over and over. I knew what it said LONG before the "cool burnouts" did, and I got a kick out of saying it to some of them. They thought I WAS THE STONER! Ahh yes....I still have the LP, but finding those cheap record players..... I just can't turn back time to get more...!!
Jeff did this on purpose as there were a lot of these being done in the late 60's (thanks to the Beatles) and the 70's. However, it's just backwards masking, not subliminal at all.
Also, the song is the 1st track. This was in vinyl times... so if you kept turning it the wrong way, the needle would come off of the record and bounce on the turntable!
The voice of drummer Bev Bevans. It was a "give it a go and see what happens". I loved it and the year the "Face the Music" album came out I had seen them in DC at the Capital Center, scared the crap out of me at first, along with all the other chemically induced hysteria. The band played to perfection.
This was a deliberate move by ELO. After the release of "Eldorado", for some reason (still unknown) A religious right group had played the title track in reverse and found a very clear, yet unintentional backward message. Something to the effect of "You're the nasty one, Christ you are infernal" and "He hangs there dead on the Cross, not for me, not for you" Creepy, yet the band flew off the handle and went ape-shit on "Face The Music"..and it just started a long battle for ELO & God groups
They just did it because all the hulabaloo about all the other people doing it and Jeff wanted people to buy the record if for anything for people to run it backwards to find out what it said....
Well i guess he just used his lyrics in reverse to make them as FX,so when you turn it backwards,it makes a sense.A lot of artists using their lyrics in reverse to use them as FX
@zev007 You know what is meant... and it IS called subliminal... groups of the 60's and 70's were accused of placing "subliminal" messages in their records... found when playing the record backwards... ELO was making fun of the accusers.
I think that Lynne is a genius. He was then and is now. Nothing more than a very clever way to make sure than the world (at least those who cared to decipher this "code") would get the simple message that we were fuckin' up and no matter if you fix it or not; damage is done. That statement tells us we had/have choices about how we choose to live and that we should make all time count. I remember that "backmasking" was compared to voodoo. Lynne knew this would work, generations later...
Well it is not subliminal, just reverse recording, but very funny nonetheless. I think subliminal means heard by the subconscious. When overwritten with forward recording it is called back masking I believe. I am not looking this up, so if I am wrong please forgive me
@kevinobrien01 or implanted into the subconscious by a HIDDEN means.. such as embedded backwards into a song, where you do not hear it, but your subconscious does.
Back in the early 70's Born Again Christians ( I think. I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong.) accused a lot of rock bands of incorporating subliminal messages in their music and included ELO in their attack. Jeff Lynne thought it was absurd and deliberately put this in the 1st song of the album. The entire album, from the music to the song titles and even the album cover were deliberately suggestive as a veiled slap to those baseless accusations. Great album by the way!
kl, but I don't think it was subliminal, i think it was done intentionally for people to notice, they would have made it a little less obvious if it was supposed to be subliminal.
@JLLproductions Correct. It was simply a joke they threw in for giggles. It's right at the start of the album. When, as I did in 1977, you rotated the LP (look that up, kids) backwards, you heard the warning. If you didn't heed the warning and turn back...OH NO! Your needle fell off the record! Damn funny when I was 15. Today, still worth a chuckle.
lol, it was such a hoot to find this on the album way bacck when. i had some fun playing tunage backwards for a while... i imagine these guys had some fun doing this... thank you for posting this. i wanted to hear it again and wasn't sure if i'd find it on youtube but here it is. your vid was first in the list... :)
Nothing is backward masked about this. It was recorded forward and then rerecorded backward. Done to mess with religious fanatics and stoners heads alike. If this was a real subliminal message it would not be obvious to anyone as they listened to it.
@hvymtlu back then i guess not many people would have known that reversed music was around, so they wouldn't have been any the wiser when listening to this
Yes, it was obviously put there on purpose to satirize the whole subliminal messaging scare back in the 70's.
@Whitepikman: Also, "potentionaly"? Really? I hate to be the stereotypical grammar-Nazi, but christ, come on. INTENTIONALLY. Maybe you got it confused with "potentially", but in that case it completely changes the what you're trying to say. With "intentionally" you state the obvious; with "potentially" you seem dense or too timid to commit; with "potentionally" you sound retarded.
This was Jeff being blatant and facetious in a time where people thought the devil was in the music and any vague phonic was 'proof' [Stairway to Heaven, et al]. Previously engineers did try 'funny' stuff in reverse to see what they could get away with. Nice post!
Yes I was corrupted when I heard this subliminal message afterwards when I heard this I woke up in the middle of the night .... reached under my mattress.... and pulld ... out ... All the money I had and bought more E.L.O.!!!!! O.M.G. I'm so ashamed I havent been able to stop for 30 + years....
I'm turning back, that's what I think! Cool jcuki5. I was told to do this with my album years ago, I was too afraid. Silly. "Fire On High" The "Exorcist" of rock songs.
In the first part of the song, I had no idea what the guy was saying. In other words, it was a total accident, whatever it was you thought you heard. If it's unaudible, what does it mean? Nothing. Anyway, it's been proven time and time again by psychologists that subliminal messages have absolutely no affect on people or animals.
actually....No... it wasn't an accident. i JUST heard they artists on the radio and he said he did it on purpose to scare those funny religious people who believed that playing the records backwards will release the devil or whatever shit they thought.
so what was the point of this, other then giving us the lyrics? Fuck of, I just scare3d the fuck out of my freaking pants omfg his voice, the way he said this, I almost pissed me of OMFG i was just holding toght to my mouse and thinking that the video would never finish...
People, this song was meant to find the child who was possessed by the deamon as it was believed, by listening to this music the demon would "Turn Back"
ok now i get it, my mother told me about this. back in the 60's-80's parents would play a record backward and say there was a devil message, so on purpose elo did this to mess with them basically its fake.
Yes it's an old song they play on classic rock stations, every once in a while. Why would it scare you? This was just something done in a studio. The song is actually scarrier than any music I've heard in a horror movie though.
I heard this was partly a joke on Jeff Lynne's part as Eldarado the previous album was banned from sale in some mid west U.S states as it was thought (and this bit creases me) that he mixed subliminal satanic messages in the music.
ELO was so blatant with the backwards message. They obviously wanted to see if people would catch on to it, and apparently some people did. When played the regular way, the beginning sounds like he is saying "hot girls, hot girls, hot girls".
thats the song forwards the song backwards saya " the music is reversable but time isnt turn back turn back so when it was relesed u heard the gibberish sounds wen played forward but the message revresed
The Pokemon song also has a message. If you play it backwards you will hear the chorus singing ' I LOVE SATAN, I LOVE SATAN, .... If you dont believe me look it up.
This is'nt a bit scary as "Eldorado" was. Actually' All these artists did this for a sales gimmick, And i found it quite amusing. This message is very true and should'nt be taken too lightly.
Thanks! I've been wondering for the last 30 years since this song came out what it said. We tried every means to hear it, but were never successful....Until now.
A subliminal just means a message you see or take in, without knowing you did. Subliminal just means below the threshold of detection. That's the most common way of doing it, but there are others. Like extremely faed text that you cant notice if you aren't trying to.
Hilarious. This was actually in response to all the witch hunting that was going on about "satanic" backward messages on their previous record, "Eldorado" (which, when you hear the accused track, it takes a LOT of imagination to hear anything). Jeff Lynne and company decided to give them all what they were looking for...and actual message hidden in the track (although, quite blatant, also probably for comedic effect).
very cool, however as far as intenionality and subliminal messages go, i would give it to Pink Floyd's Empty Spaces, played backwards, a segment clearly says:
-Hello, Luka [hunters]... Congratulations. You have just discovered the secret message. Please send your answer to Old Pink, care of the Funny Farm, Chalfont...
The entire song is a palindrome and it's fantastic. If you take the whole song and just play it backwards, all of the music and sound effects are the same. I love it. And it's not subliminal lol, it's part of the song
Not subliminal. Aimed at the "Christians" who were playing every Rock record backwards, they KNEW what had to be said.

dude trust me its not real would you really put the music is reverible but time is not turn back turn back perfectly in a song by accedent?
coolscape6 2 years ago
Yes it's an old song they play on classic rock stations, every once in a while. Why would it scare you? This was just something done in a studio. The song is actually scarrier than any music I've heard in a horror movie though.

The creepiest song in Classic Rock History.

I heard this was partly a joke on Jeff Lynne's part as Eldarado the previous album was banned from sale in some mid west U.S states as it was thought (and this bit creases me) that he mixed subliminal satanic messages in the music.
melindarann 2 years ago
ELO was so blatant with the backwards message. They obviously wanted to see if people would catch on to it, and apparently some people did. When played the regular way, the beginning sounds like he is saying "hot girls, hot girls, hot girls".
rockerforlife2001 2 years ago
Sounds to me like he's saying...
kcab nrut..... kcab nrut..... kcab nrut :P

That was put there on purpose. Pretty funny shit.
TehNu0b 2 years ago
they did this on purpose because they had been accused of putting satanic messages in there songs that can be heard when played in reverse : P
bcrklein1992 2 years ago
The Pokemon song also has a message. If you play it backwards you will hear the chorus singing ' I LOVE SATAN, I LOVE SATAN, .... If you dont believe me look it up.

This is'nt a bit scary as "Eldorado" was. Actually' All these artists did this for a sales gimmick, And i found it quite amusing. This message is very true and should'nt be taken too lightly.

does no one know what a subliminal message is? its when like on a video you have a message pop on the screen for 10,000th of a second.
aieoneoneeight 2 years ago
A subliminal just means a message you see or take in, without knowing you did. Subliminal just means below the threshold of detection. That's the most common way of doing it, but there are others. Like extremely faed text that you cant notice if you aren't trying to.
Nejizero666 2 years ago 2
Hilarious. This was actually in response to all the witch hunting that was going on about "satanic" backward messages on their previous record, "Eldorado" (which, when you hear the accused track, it takes a LOT of imagination to hear anything). Jeff Lynne and company decided to give them all what they were looking for...and actual message hidden in the track (although, quite blatant, also probably for comedic effect).
kungfugrip7 2 years ago
Wah... :S
It's kind of creepy... What do they mean...? ;O
Does anyone know the name of the song where they say "Join us, join us, join us" ..?
Some kind of satanic group...
veslefros 2 years ago
very cool, however as far as intenionality and subliminal messages go, i would give it to Pink Floyd's Empty Spaces, played backwards, a segment clearly says:
-Hello, Luka [hunters]... Congratulations. You have just discovered the secret message. Please send your answer to Old Pink, care of the Funny Farm, Chalfont...
-Roger! Carolyne's on the phone!
-Okay.
most creepy

The entire song is a palindrome and it's fantastic. If you take the whole song and just play it backwards, all of the music and sound effects are the same. I love it. And it's not subliminal lol, it's part of the song
