  • I wish I lived closer, I would love to visit Barkerville Ghost Town...

  • im going to do a little bogie wogie flip flop all the way to a place known to have gold and start gold panning lol

  • The mans awesome love the pan too.

  • There's so much wisdom in this, respect old timer!

  • who the hell would dislike this?

  • @JeriDro Haters gotta hate .... Makes them feel important .

  • @Concretehead01 wow i know it sounds stupid but that makes alot of sense and never thought of it that way

  • Shake or talk, brother. Your southern accent already makes it difficult to understand. :-)

  • Ima try this in my backyard >:D

  • wow 2000 worth of gold. in about 10 minutes of work. wow. but sometimes you will not get lucky and not find anything. but its all about luck.

  • I kinda wanna do this, not even for the gold, it just looks cool.

  • now this is how to get gold

  • Im on hour 3 of gold vids..

  • What a greedy person.

  • If it was "just that easy" this guy wouldn't be working at a tourist shop... ;)

Cool video though. Thanks for posting.

  • @ellisgarvin

Maybe the guy is content with what he's got, unlike so many others who just keeps wanting stuff.

1 ounce (28 grams) of gold was at $900 when this video was posted. That big nugget in there looks to be at least 40 grams, plus the smaller ones and the finer gold specks, another 20 grams or so, so that's easily $2000.

Today's (December 3, 2011) gold price is $1742/ounce. That makes the gold in this video worth about $3500.

  • @ellisgarvin like the man said, the creek's got other ideas

  • Wealth of knowledge.

  • Thank you:-)

  • working a metal pan is a gift and a craft and through your knowledge of the years u have spent honing this craft :). I thank you for your generousity and time in showing this.for no matter if it is a "classic" metal pan or on of the new plastic one they are both the same in the way u work it . and with saying that i personally think that this is a great quick tutorial on this.

May the Fates smile kindly down upon You and let there always be color in the bottom of your pan.

  • I have watched this vid over 20 times and I learn something new every time. Thanks for sharing your craft with those of us who need it...like me!

  • I finally found my gold pan in that bunkhouse of ours (basically a huge shed) after two days! I've been looking through every drawer that wasn't blocked and it was just on a top shelf! There's a creek down by the road not far from where I live, looks really hard to get to because it's in its own little canyon, I might look for gold in there.

  • When your on good ground, you could use a 1950's Ford hubcap!

Just get on some good ground, then any pans a good pan...

  • Which one is better metal/ plastic ..if plastic the ones that have ridges or without?

  • He's Old School...

  • why a metal pan instead of plastic?

  • YOur awesome thanks for the wonderful info on the pan ... YOur the godfather of gold paning :)

  • $2,000 then $5,000 now

  • 2 people disliked this video? Friggen trolls! This guy is awesome. I never thought about moving the gold up in the pan and panning out the sands and bigger stuff. Thanks for the vid!

  • Great video.

  • verry nice

  • this guy is probably one of those miners in the gold rush and is probably rich

  • awesome accent, very skilled many thanx.

  • i remember this very guy teaching me to gold pan when i visited barkerville. amazing!

  • im gona try this meathod in my river soon it used to be mined further up

  • One grain of sand every 45 minutes lol

  • nice, a very helpful video with the tips.

  • Holy crap, if you look at the bowl right, it can be an illusion, pretty cool =)

  • this is the very best video on panning technique with a metal gold pan. Thanks for sharing

  • Great presentation. Nothing like watching a pro make something look so easy...

  • Great teacher! Im going to go to my property where ive found SOME gold dust. I just didnt know how to look and pan properly. I now feel more confident to try again. Thanks for your 40 years of experience in 7 1/2 mins.. THANKS AGAIN!

  • Old dude, got skillz!

  • great video, looking forward to getting out and doing some panning.

  • what a great explanation and demonstration! thanks for posting! :)

  • And the pan did not have any ridges on it either ta boot! nice!

  • you are awesome!!!! i am so into rocks... ive been rock hunting sense i was born because of my dad. i love it!!! your video has taught me alot.

  • good vid i took an old rusty pan my father had from the yukon and panned a nearby riverbank with the technique you showed in this vid and what ya know two "very-small" flakes my first pan

  • I went out panning this weekend for the first time in 26 years, I was 5. I wish I had seen this video first. I had spent a season living on a small mine [placer?] on the cottonwood river or lightening creek?, just out of quesnel. One of the most memorable summers of my life. I don't think I've ever seen anyone use a pan properly until now. I was pretty close, that rotation is an excellent tip.

  • Maybe it was $2000 in 2008. It's probably worth a good $3000 or $3500 now.

  • The best demonstration I've seen. Much Thanks!

  • Your are a great man Gary. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience with us. Regards from New Zealand

  • Hi Haynerbass, some creeks coming in to Stave lake show good signs and when they built the Stave Lake dam the workers panned Gold on their Coffee breaks.

Try the leading edge of the Fraser River Bars after the spring melt, should be good for flour gold. Try Thompson River Camp site "Gold Pan" & Dig under the trailing edge of the biggest boulders. I hope this helps. I will be giving an Audio Visual History Talk at the Maple Ridge Library, August 27th. Check the BcGhostTowns.ca web site

    GOOD Luck

  • I live in Maple Ridge B.C. Anywhere near here I can go panning?

  • this guy is a master panner

  • Thanks helped alot

  • i heard the OOOOH in his voice when he saw the nugget.... so great.

  • The more i watch gold rush alaska and all these other vids of gold and how to find gold, the more i want to move up there.gold rush fever perhaps? maybe so.

  • very great video

  • this may sound stupid, but could their be gold in way northern NY rivers?

    thanks

  • what is that at 29 cecks thx

  • how far is this from fresno

  • 2 29 he panned out a nugget

  • awesome!!! i think im gonna live off the land now! thanks for posting.

  • Gary if you were at Barkerville in the late 70s you probably taught me how to pan because I pan Identical as this system ironic never forget , Funny you`d think that the Cottonwood would be worked over by many minors since the 18-1900 hundreds but we panned out 3gr in one weekend still have it Thanks.

  • The best " how to " Gold panning ive ever seen :-)

  • does every creek have gold or is it a matter of finding the right spot

  • That is aWeSoMe!!! I've never seen a panner have such control to be able to weed out all the black sand. The absolute best tutorial anywhere, thanks for sharing!

  • That was fun. Thanks

  • best instruction on panning anywhere thanks old timer....willie

  • so where do you go when you want to pan some gold? if there was really that much money in it, I'd say companies would cut off that creek and filter out the gold by machines.. unfortunately. But maybe I miss some point here, I'm german and I don't really have much knowledge about gold panning and the whole gold rush thing with the claims and such. Are there rivers known to carry gold or do you just take a random one in your vacinity and start panning?

  • he made it look easy...not that easy..

  • Thanks ! well done.

  • There is amazing artistry in what he does...it's funny how this level of mastery (of anything for that matter) is so compelling to watch...and, it doesn't take a college education to spot it.

  • Impressive...

  • great video..what kind of oil did you bake the pan with..cooking oil..motor oil?

  • great video..what kind of oil did you bake the pan with..cooking oil..motor oil?

  • Nice vid, wondering tho how much earth was moved before it all came down to that one pan?

  • The creek has its own ideas eh.. hmmm i ran into an fellow years ago hitching through Hope and he said "Once you get the glimmer of gold in yer eye, you'll never get it out" I don't think him so crazy anymore though with just what i've been researching.. thanks BcghostTownsDOTcom

  • So is this guy wealthy?

  • @lordway If you measure wealth by happiness,I'd say this guy is LOADED! Just look at what most folks do to make a living, and apply that against being out in nature,in a beautiful setting. Now add the surprises that lie in wait for you with each and every day doing this sort of thing.Soaking up nature in an outdoor setting, where there's lots of fish and game. What more do you need? Build a shack and live like you were supposed to. Is this guy wealthy? YOU'RE DAMN RIGHT HE IS.GOLD OR NOT!

  • i wish i could pan for gold :(

i would do it for hours non stop.

  • Hi @akhero47 The nuggets are under two ounces Troy But large nuggets have a higher retail than just their troy weight.

    Thanks for your comment

    John

  • looking for more country like this - banjo, fiddle, simple rhythms. any suggestions?

  • nice music in the background :)

    and awesome video, of course!

  • I could pay my rent w/ that panning technique.

  • people dont watch this and think your going to get nuggets like that!

the guy put em in the pan to demonstrate how to pan

you dont just get a big nugget in every pan when you go out ... in fact if you start gold panning for cash over a hobby you've already lost the game

  • where can I get such a pan mailorder??

  • going panning next weekend first time, thankyou your giving me the inspiration

  • A++

  • this guy isnt really a gold guy.. hes an ex wall street exec

  • ol dan tucker love it

  • Dang I wonder how much gold I can get out of False Creek in big old Vancouver?? or maybe I should just stick with the jewelery shops...

  • The greatest generosity is shearing knowledge, experience and truth. Thank you, great video!

  • @089674532 BRAVO@!!!

  • Excellent vid. Love the accent.

  • old is gold so this old is like a gold

  • Do you have to Blue those steel pans before you use them?! Thanks!

  • Oil and bake the pans and do this again

and again, depending on the use. Plastic

is the way to go but just doesn't have the

sound of a plinker in the pan...

This hobby is no flash in the Pan !

  • @BCghostTownsDOTcom where could you buy a pan just like that?

  • I love this guys voice, great video, GOD BLESS his soul!!!

  • LOL i worked with this guy all summer!! I've heard this speach so many times and it never gets old

  • Thank you very much for this.

  • Love the videos!

  • Awesome mate! thanks for sharing this , now going to get myself a nice pan, and harvest that beauty.. ^_^

  • This is great will be keeping this in mind if I ever get the chance to pan. 5/5

  • Hi Bleppe, Sorry I'm just a British Columbia Historian, But I can tell you with some confidence that gold dose not react to UV-Light. I think the guy that took some Gold Nugget trained gofers, to the Yukon Rush of 1898, well I think he had the right idea? "ha-ha" Keepup the good hunt...

    John

  • live in Chilliwack BC right beside the Vedder river...should i bother panning in the Vedder or go straight to the Fraser or Coquihalla? Its winter right now..i can still find sand bars all over the vedder should i bother???

  • @BCghostTownsDOTcom great job keep on panning/ I live in western pa ,not much gold but have some. thanks for the video.

  • How much did it weigh? I know the gold price is around 28 usd per gram, but that couldn't possibly be 71 grams of gold, or is it really that dense?

  • Hi no they were not 71 grams but natural nuggets that size take on extra value. But gold is very dense.

Thanks for your comment and happy panning...

  • Cool beans. I've never found a nugget, at least not that big. I have one more question that i've never found the answer to online. Is gold uv-reactive? By that i mean, does it give off a glow under uv-lights?

It would speed up the process of finding placer pockets.

  • @Bleppe 19.3g/cm3 is density of gold.

  • Hi orangedac, The pan is just a regular metal pan.

There are gold baring creeks in Ontario just read some History books for your area. If gold was ever taken out there will still be some to be found.

Good Luck and thanks for your email.

    John

  • There are a few areas which have placer gold in Ontario. One of them is the Vermilion River east of Sudbury. Another is the Monroe Esker north of Kirkland Lake. East side of James Bay had good placer coming off the mountains. Red Sucker Creek in Timmins also had placer gold. There is one fossil placer in Day twp, north shore of Superior.

  • No it's a regular pan,

    Thanks for your question.

    John

  • well could you explain what kind of a pan is it? would that technique work with a stainless steel pan?

i feel like running down to the local creek with a pan from the kitchen. i know the only thing i'll get is a sore back by the end of it all.

To begin with, is there any gold to be found in the toronto area in ontario or would i be wasting my time?

  • Hey! I think you already found something near Toronto but anyway! There is Madoc and Marmora on the road to Ottawa about 160 km to Madoc(it's almost halfway to Ottawa) then Marmora is on the same route about 140 km from Toronto. I know there were finds there but you will be on your own (finding a creek and everything, it's just luck). About 680 km from Toronto there is Timmins gold mine! And you can pan there (they will give you a pan and some grave it will cost about 30$)

    Hope this helped!!!

  • Madoc, marmora..etc are too damn far.

I need something closer. Unfortunately my research has revealed there's not a geological formation in sight which might yield gold.

I busted my balls on the weekend trying to find gold but came up empty handed. DAMN THIS PLACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • is that a stainless steel pan?
