  • I'm not gonna lie, I never heard of this song or this band before. But I was checking out the movie Prefontiane & this song came on during his death scene. & it's been haunting me ever since & that's been over 10yrs ago. I saw it again today, It was just a few bars of it, but it had me. Beautifully sad, my man sang this song with so much emmotions, he makes you feel it.

  • I hadn't heard that the belt was part of the 12 step program... at least he kicked the habit.

  • I get a real deep sadness from this performance.

  • dear, the12 people who disliked this video... suck it.

  • dear, the12 people who disliked this video... suck it.

  • webster hall is in princeton nj .if I'm not mistaken...the vocal by manuel is sublime...only saw them once but they definitely blew away the competition ,,,something real

  • So sad it wasnt expressed on "The Last Waltz" HUH...We got to see a whole lot of animated Robbie and no Richard. BOO

  • U got that right,,,, He never got what he deserved for sure and it wasnt a frickin belt around his neck to make any one Understand..... RIP Richard,,, I Miss you soooo much,

  • legendary song!!!

  • The best... his "4% Pantomime" with Van Morrison is the only performance that tops this one.......but the fact is ( and I treasure all their performances) the absolute best is Levon Helm's rendition of "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down"...and Levon is , God bless him!, still performing!

  • 12 bieber fans were here

  • The only thing I hate about this video is the knowledge that that fucker Robertson is NOT SINGING...his mic is off. He is a faker.

  • @JimClutchSportz Well, it's because his singing is awful, it's was a common thing in their concert, even in The Last Waltz. He had a mic to make people think he sang and wrote every songs

  • The tiny photo of Richard & The story of the way he left us will always be embeded in my mind. Whenever I watch "The Last Waltz" I still shake my head in disbelief. RIP Richard.

  • Never ever take this video down, not until the world ends!

  • I just heard this ssong on everything must go and it made me cry and relate to this ssong so much I hate my ex

  • @goofy420247 Sorry for whatever reason you have.. but just remember, you can't be released until you release your own hate.. Good luck

  • whenever I had felt fatigue, this tune gave me the necessary courage to live... R.I.P. Richard

  • For every man who put me herte…

  • Not yet but /// I Shall Be Released, someday

  • 12 man didn't know what real music is

  • this is one of the best performances in rock history............richard manuel's vocal is so far above the clouds.......it just tears the emotion right out of your body............just a legendary vocal.... like so many others, never got the recognition that he so well deserved!!!!

  • just discovered this song, it sends shivers down my spine, such a beautiful song and voice...life affirming for me as i've not been at my best recently...so sad to read the singer has passed...thank you for uploading this, off to track down the cd tomorrow...

  • I wonder if because it's a Cameron Crowe film, that Jason Lee looked and sang so much like Richard in Almost Famous in the bit where he's playing piano...

  • Love the Wonder Years, purchased the whole series a few years ago! Great songs

  • everything must go brought me here. BUT JESUS CHRIST IT TOOK A LONG TIME TO FINALLY FIND THIS SONG

  • had to swich to my big ass clunky headphones after i started this.

  • chills & tears...

  • 2:16

    Woah

  • @midwestaverage24 No kidding, made my spine tremor

  • It's the first time i listened to it and i'm gonna put it on replay for some time :))

  • its a prison song is it not

  • I agree with the Wonder Years comments...great song and great episode!

  • :) QC

  • Want this played at my funeral

  • @IOIOIOIOIOIOIOIOIOIO

Beautiful song with some awesome lyrics depicting ones life's troubles. Despite your post name this song is very much a befitting send off.

  • 9 people were released

  • i love beer

  • Is it true you have the coolest video on YouTube? Inquiring minds want to know! :)

  • I love this song so much!!!!

  • i wish more people my age listened to the band! i have yet to find another 15 year old girl who likes this kind of stuff :(

  • SO GOODDD! THANK YOU!!

  • Great to see a good vid of Richard singing. Does Robbie really need to pretend he sings whenever a camera's around?

  • @kman2300000000000000 I´m sure his mike was always turned off. During the last waltz helm gets pissed and yells at the sound guy to turn that !"""@@3´s mike off. lol

  • @blackdogleg Actually I think Big L says that in Festival Express during "The Weight"

  • that voice and song fits perfectly.

  • I swear to God, for thirty years, I thought Rick Danko sang the lead on this.....ooooops!!!

  • Another sublime version that comes close to this is Gov't Mule live with Tim Reynolds on guitar.

  • holy fuck, manuels falsetto is beautiful...

  • absolutely wonderful...I love getting old ;)

  • This is my favourite song of all time. If you want to know why ask Viv Bradley why my first kiss was my sadest.

  • 7 dislikes... what can be said about such people????

  • This is just the best version of this song alive. What a singer! No offense to Dylan, but this is stratospheric in its beauty.

  • Six people are complete idiots! Richard Manuel was amazing!! And The Band had/has no peers!!!

  • Dylan wrote this BECAUSE of Richard Manuel.......

  • Long Live Richard Manuel.......

  • That "lonely crowd" note gives me goosebumps.

  • Dude could sing!

  • Man...the band was just plain great. Accept no substitutes

  • almost perfect - just need the audio synced just a tad bit more; still awesome

  • rip richard

  • THE greatest video on You Tube.....PERIOD!!!

  • i hate to be that guy but i like the original much better

  • IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS SONG FOR OVER 20 YEARS NOW! NO KIDDING, SINCE I FIRST HEARD IT ON THE WONDER YEARS 20 YEARS AGO, I COULDNT FIND IT, BECAUSE THE INTERNET WASNT IN EVERY HOUSE HOLD BACK THEN, AND EVER SINCE THE SHOW WAS NO LONGER AIRED, I COULDNT REMEMBER ANY OF THE LYRICS, I JUST KNEW WHAT EPISODE IT WAS AND THAT I REALLY LIKED THE SONG!

I JUST WATCHED THE RE-AIR OF IT ON HUB NETWORK, AND GOT THE LYRICS, NOW I HAVE FINALLY GOT THE SONG I LOVE.

    TODAY IS A GREAT DAY!

  • @0311GRUNT awesome, that is the best when that happens. I used to go to a blues bar and watch a band play some covers of tunes i never knew then have to remember certain lines from lyrics, so i could go home and search for the lyrics to find the song on the net. then search for it on youtube. best feeling when you find it. a musical quest.

  • @dannyiswellcool thats awesome! this is not the first song i have had to search for. but it was the longest, most memorable, and the most rewarding. what made it even more difficult, was the fact that there are so many other bands who have covered it, BUT THIS ONE IS THE BEST!

    thanks!

  • @0311GRUNT

    what episode of wonder years?

  • @plimsoul222 the title of the episode is "Triangle". in the episode Waynes new girlfriend kisses Kevin and confesses her feelings for him, behind Waynes back. the song is played at the dance in the end of the episode.

the episode can be seen on HUB network

  • @0311GRUNT Thank you. I loved that show. You gave me a good reason to rent the box set. Thanks again

  • @plimsoul222 me too. they dont make em like they used to.

    youre very welcome.

    enjoy!

  • @plimsoul222 just found the episode on here on youtube title 'Wonder Years 75 - Triangle Part 4'- song starts at 2:02

  • @0311GRUNT Crap.. LOL, I hve the CD. Thats like going away now too. Richard Manual just blows my mind! Some reason, I feel a Connnection there but he is gone,, But his Music Lives On!!

  • @0311GRUNT Have you checked out "The Last Waltz" by these guys and Martin Scorsese? If not, you should.

  • @0311GRUNT ... Make sure you get Bob Dylan's original version of the song (just Bob,and acoustic and a harmonica) that is the best version.

  • @maissinp i'll be sure to, thanks!

  • @0311GRUNT Everyday is a good day when we can listen to this song

  • @aditay I have been a fan of The Band since forever, glad you found the words, after the tragic death of Richard Manuel Bob Dylan sang this song at a concert as a tribute to him, i can tell you the tears flowed.

  • @0311GRUNT Youtube has been around for twenty years??? Ey bud, turn your caps lock, OFF... It's highly ANNOYING

  • @DurbanpoisonXskunk YOU OBVIOUSLY FAILED READING COMPREHENSION. THOSE 8 YEARS OF HIGH SCHOOL DIDNT PAY OFF, DID THEY? (IF I COULD INCREASE THE SIZE OF THE FONT, I WOULD JUST FOR YOU)

  • @0311GRUNT Congrats isn't the internet fantastic,and youtube,the music is infinite

  • @0311GRUNT fascinating

  • @0311GRUNT Just watched the episode... WONDER YEARS IS THE BEST SHOW EVER - GOTTA LOVE KEVIN RIGHT AMIRIGHT GUYS?

  • Funny you should mention Wonder Years. I just finished watching that episode on Apple TV, like the song, turned on the subtitles to find the lyrics, and went to YouTube to find it, and during the whole thing I wondered what I would've done back in the day without the internet.

I would've had to sing the song to my mom and get her to identify it, and well... something like that just doesn't wash off.

  • @0311GRUNT oorah

  • This makes me cry like a girl

  • This is such a beautful and wonderful song. It is very well performed but strong powerful yet oh so delicate and emotional. This can really stir your soul. One of Dylans best efforts for sure!. "I see my light come shinning..."- wow!

  • Richard has one of those special voices. I think I saw that Elvis Costello was thinking "I'll just be a songwriter" but then he heard a song by Rick and thought "yes! one can sing quirky great". This should bring a tear to ones eyes because of fallen friends but more so just because IT"S a beautiful haunting song that I couldn't screw up if I sang.

  • brings a tear to my eye every time.... reminding me of all my fallen friends...in music

  • THE BAND/I Shall Be Released

    いつの日か、解き放たれる、天上の気分。ルーベンスの絵を見たネロか…。

  • Can't get any better than this.....Richard, we mourn you (I went to his memorial service in Woodstock - I just wish I had known him better before he was released from this world - he was too sweet and nice to remain here any longer). I miss Richard and Rick constantly. Rock on Levon!

  • Richard's voice is amazing... totally agree.

They're all so young and vibrant.--And it's so nice to Robbie in there playing with them.

  • those silly Canadians,,,,and the great drummer too.

  • I also think it has a more literal meaning, being released from prison

  • Comment removed

  • Released from the body that you are inhabiting of course. It has to do with the ninth chapter of Paul's epistle to the Romans. Verse 24 most especially. Wonderful song.

  • What do you think the lyrics mean in this song? Released from what? My daughters favorite song who has left this world. Any suggestions?

  • oh wonderful ..

  • Manuel's falsetto brings tears to my eyes and shivers down my spine.

  • @MegaBobsmith1 me too buddy. What a beautiful song.

  • Dear America...................watch and cry!!

  • Free .

  • lovin the beards

  • Okay. Who could honestly dislike this video? Some people, I swear.

  • Holy jumpin!!!

  • Jesus Christ at night, this is just SO good. Can't even sum it up in words, it's just unbelievable.

  • Makes your soul ache and eyes tear up w/ love

  • THIS TIME PERIOD..... perfection...

  • No one will ever touch Jeff's version, but this ain't bad.

  • I cry every time i hear this! Whenever im sad i listen to this and it makes me slightly better

  • This is one of my favorites Enjoy !!

  • A real high point in the history of RNR, The Band, so earthy and soulful, a BAND with 5 equally GREAT and integral players. One of the greatest bands ever, no doubt about that. RIP Richard, Rick.......I'll love you guys forever!

  • RIP Richard Manuel. You broke my heart about 25 years ago when I saw you and the Band, minus Robbie, in Dallas. Two weeks later, you hung yourself. I cried for you that morning on my way to work. A very sad day indeed.

  • I wonder if this version was in the film "The last Waltz", great song!

  • @Silverniten A version similar to this was done in "the Last Waltz" as an encore, with all the musicians that performed in the movie coming out on stage. Dylan sang the 1st verse, Richard sang the 2nd, and pretty much everybody joined in on the third verse. It was very emotional, very moving, and truly awesome!

  • Comment removed

  • @strummersbrother . That was the last tour with "the band" if I remeber it right!

  • @Silverniten yeah they had already stopped touring. The Last Waltz was basically the last time they played together as a group, although they did go into the studio after the movie to record some extra songs for the movie, like: "(Theme from)The Last Waltz", "Evangeline" w/Emmylou Harris, and "The Weight" w/StapleSingers, but "TLW" was all she wrote for Robbie and the Band.

  • Those first two albums amazing !! No other group have reached those heights then or since.

  • Best version of this song ever! I believe this video is off of festival express. Also Janis Joplins last video, see it! Great DVD!

  • Richard Manuel had one of the most soulful voices I've ever heard.

  • Sweet!

  • words of wisdom

  • It is still relevant more then ever oh man. I have seen it....

  • Man oh man.....man...oh...man....

  • WOW

  • Man it doesn't get much better than this.

  • anthonythirteen, don't you mean your a GOOF !! lol

  • from what dvd is this from?

  • It was on The Big Pink album and also on the early Greatest Hits album. Great song...one of my Band favorites. Loved that Richard...wish he was still gracing us with his talents. RIP in my dear friend.

  • Fave version of my fave Dylan tune. Richard's falsetto is heartbreaking! So much talent in one band is remarkable and unforgettable.

  • @Timsmusic100 Just chaps my ass, Robbie, acting like he can sing and cameras all on him.... When the REAL Voices were Levon, Richard and Danko... Funny but Robbie CANT Sing! Plays the hell out of a guitar though.

  • RIP RICH!!!!!!!

  • The Greatest Rock Band to ever come from North America. Period.

    May Richard & Rick, R.I.P.

  • i own this and yes martin scorcesse directed it

  • @tatoo56 you can't tell... what with all the close-ups of robbie and all!

  • What an awesome Band! It is hard to believe one band had three singers that could do leads...Danko and Helm are just fantastic too, Manuel is beautiful. So sad. I love this band!!!!

  • great song R.I.P richard

  • Great song!

  • Poor Richard sang like a bird.... check "The Rumor"

  • That's a mean falsetto!

  • was this at woodstock

  • This was Festival Express footage

  • As a psycho Band fan it feels weird saying this, but to me Nina Simone's cover is the definitive "I Shall Be Released". This is my favorite version from The Crackers though.

  • ¿ʇɐɥʇ op ǝıuuoɹ p1noʍ ʎɥʍ

  • Don't you mean 'The Honkies'???

  • One of the best ballads...ever!!!!

  • I think Richard was my all time favorite male singer ~Peace

  • Read somehere Levon the drummer said Richard was a good looking guy and then when he went into that high pitched tone all the girls went so crazy . I like Whispering Pines too , am sure that was played at this concert, that one would be a great song to play at a wedding.

  • What a voice.

So much pain and emotional in it.

  • Happy Birthday Richard Manuel (April 3rd)You are still an amazing performer

  • They were just a bunch of guys that backed up Ronnie Hawkins in the 60's, God bless them.

  • they also backed up some guy named dylan in the 60's too....

  • That was a time where things like that could happen.

  • True my Fav. story is the legend that Eric Clapton wanted to join them to. Not sure if it is real but ...

  • Watch the movie called 'The Last waltz', the last concert The Band did. You'll be surprised who's there.

  • seen about 20 times thank you

  • EC admits this himself in his book - he was v keen on a group that seemed to be 'true' to its roots, unlike the latter days with Cream. But he also wanted to hook up with Duane Allman!

  • and with Patty Harrison (which he did). I saw EC probably a dozen times, The Band three times. They were both SO amazingly awesome!!! True to their roots, Yes. These guys were big time partiers during the day, which is what got the best of Richard eventually. Still, he was one more amazing talent, I love him and may he rest in peace.

  • Bit like saying The Beatles were "a popular beat combo from Liverpool"!

  • just listen

  • hes the Brent of The Band! great voice

  • In a way. Richard was a more prolific composer and also was a multi-instrumentalist with that great voice. Brent was the man too though

  • such a great song

  • they say everything can be repleased ..

    such a phrase....such a songwriter....such a band ..

ou sry i mean THE BAND ...the only band which is able to play dylan songs the way they should be played..

  • the grateful dead can also do that

  • grateful dead plays them too slow, IMHO

  • One of the best voices in musical history, in my opinion.
