It is an awesome spectacle to watch and hear thousands of people sing the notes and words in unison, paying homage to Thyagaraja (that's the purpose of the aradhana).

This 2006 session is particularly wonderful because of the presence of master violinist Kunnakudi Vaidhyanadhan (who passed away in Sept. '08) - you can see him in the clp at 1:34.

  • So moving.. Thyagaraja (along with Muthuswamy Dikshitar and Swama Sastri) laid down the foundations of modern Carnatic music. These 5 songs (pancha rathna kritis) highlight Thyagaraja's musical genius. The 5 ragas he used are 'gana' (heavy) ragas - majestic, beautiful. The songs alternate swaras (underlying notes that make up the ragas) and the words composed on top of the notes. They are masterpieces.
