correct me if im wrong but doesnt the balrog have i dont know...wings which can be used to like fly!!! and why cant gandalf summon that eagle thing again through some moth so the eagle can like fight gandalfs battles
I never read the books so this probably is why I am confused.First of all when I saw the first movie I assumed Gandalf fell and died, just like everyone else.BUT THEN,I saw 1:10 and I was like WHAAAAT!?? So, yeah, he didn't fall and die, he fell and fought the Balrog, and somehow "got on top of a mountain"??(from what I saw somewhere)Not to mention that I don't understand the you shal not pass part. Was he using a spell or something because it was apparent the bridge could not support the Balrog?
Gandalf is not a human. He is a Maiar (like a low ranking angel). After they fell into the lake the Balrog's flames were put out, and Gandalf chased him through the abyss and up the endless stair to the top of the Silvertine mountains for eight days. At the top of the mountain they fought again for two days and nights. Gandalf won, but died of his injuries shortly thereafter. He was brought back to life as Gandalf the white some days later.
@yeahchris Hmmm. Should've been in one of the movies. They showed the very beginning and very end of the fight, but that's all. How would Gandalf even beat that thing? It doesn't seem like he has strong spells. Does it have something to do with that sword? Also why did he bother chasing after it, he could have escaped right?
Probably had to cut it out due to time constraints and for the sake of pacing.
In both the books and films the full extent of Gandalf's powers are never fully explained, however it's hinted at that he is very, very, very powerful.
As to why he didn't run away; he had the upper hand, and they were more or less locked in a mortal struggle at that point.
Udûn was the first fortress of Melkor, also known as Morgoth, which was the first of the Ainur to rebel and attempt to steal the secret fire for themselves (the fire which brought life to Arda.
The full quote is:
"I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the flame of Anor. The dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udûn. Go back to the Shadow! You cannot pass."
'Flame of Udûn is being used as a name for the Balrog. It's akin to calling it a Beast of Hell.
Notive how the bridge is completely flat when and after Gandalf breaks it, but after he is hanging onto it, it's suddenly filled with cracks and holes?
one thing just dont understand... they fell in water at the end of this clip but in the continue they fall in the water then 1 sec later they end up on a top of a mountin....how the hell did that happen?
Yes they did, I'll quote the reaction from VulpesFideli:
There was a staircase built by the Dwarves, called the Endless Stair. It goes from the bottom of that pit - Middle-earth's lowest point - to the top of Silvertine, it's highest known point.
There was a running battle all the way up, concluding on top of Silvertine.
That's what Gandalf meant by "from the lowest dungeon to the highest peak," when his final defeat of the Balrog is shown.
Well they didn't built the staircase all the way down, they built until they reached tunnels of unknown origin. Tunnels that were built by beings they had never seen before.
@lolisho0 I haven't read the book, but i read that they actually fought for some days after hitting the water, going up the tower. You can tell they spend quite a lot of time fighting judging by Gandalf's deplorable state.
"From the lowest dungeon to the highest peak I fought with the Balrog of Morgoth... Until at last I threw down my enemy and smote his ruin upon the mountain side..." -Gandalf
Gandalf fought the Balrog at the very bottom of Khazadum (pit/lake), but the Balrog was weakened by the water, so he fled up the endless stairs (built by the dwarves). Gandalf pursued the Balrog for many days up the stairs and confronted him at the very top of the mountain, an observatory built by the dwarves.
@lolisho0 They fought all the way through the tunnels, up the mountain onto the highest peak. The movie just skips it over, but they fought for days and days.
@lolisho0 It's a part of the books that was left out.

Do you feel like Gandalf as we declare to this health care bill, "YOU SHALL NOT PASS!"? Just when we think we have it licked, it snags us again. It's time to kill this bill for good!
Why the hell did they not just simply give him a hand between the 4 or 5 of them. They could not spot him for one pull up.
