and Harry potters going to play him in an up coming film.. apparently.. which is likely to result in the portrayal Allen Ginsberg as a man with one facial expression... for every occassion..
A great poet, a great writer. Obsessed with his work for years, and yes, he seemed a thoughtful person. But he was a pedophile. He harassed and haunted and fucked young boys. Art is not more important than character...
@treid100182 i believe they are laughing because some of its funny. but i agree that they laugh at inapropriate times... but for some of it they are laughing at funny things.
@treid100182 It is funny. Obviously there is more than humor, but it is very funny. You'd be surprised how unseriously literature takes itself sometimes. He wants people to laugh. He doesn't want people to just sit there and pick his words apart.
Allen Ginsberg was a man with clear, transcendental visions and an ability to express them in ways that struck chords with all those not constrained by rigid, mainstream thought processes. He was a sweet, gentle person, with a great love for his fellow man. I am 71 and lived during his, and Jack Kerouac's, great creative periods. They never knew me, but I count them as very close friends.
@theskystretchesblue Agree to disagree, I love the piano background on Waits version. But this is great to hear too. I'd like it better if I didn't have to hear chuckles from the crowd.
@ronrutherford I didn't really like Ginsberg until I heard this version of the poem, and along with the serious version, gives it more symbolic value.
@nuglet304 It's half serious/ half sarcastic. The way he actually caricatures everything, in a way makes it seem more obvious and real to the audience.
Everything that's wrong with America......

Poets deal with the worst audiences imaginable ... they don't get it, so they just ... laugh.
annoying as hell.

I can't understand why this is funny, the laughter makes it seem ironic to me...

I much prefer this version to the one with Tom Waits' music in the background.

wow, this reading offers a side of the poem I've never thought about before. not sure what I think yet, but still the man at his best. :-)
