@snowline79 The ads may have been shown in cinemas in 1978, but they were definitely filmed around 1971 or 1972, I'd say 1971. You can tell this by one main thing: the fashions. Everyone in the video is wearing early 70's fashions, and when you take in the hairstyles, make-up, sideburns etc you can narrow it down to either 71 or 72. Most probably late 1971. Also, most importantly, the cabin crew are wearing the 1971-74 uniform. A completely new uniform was introduced in 74.
@ManfredDeJesus yea, its actually quite simple, Qantas didnt receive its first boeing 747 until sep.1971. so you didnt need to evaluate their clothing or hair.
This is flying in style! All that gourmet food and everything. Spirit has nothing like that. Today you pay for everything you eat and drink and you can only use a credit or debit card. See what 9/11/01 did.
I think Qantas got their first 747 in 1972. And this looks to me like a cinema ad, not a TV ad. Ads on TV never ran this long, but the cinema ones were short films (remember the Peter Stuyvesant ads??)
Great to see this, thanks for posting this little bit of history. Just change the date on the title! :P
@Aussiemarco Yeah these were not flown commercially until 1970 .... I have been searching for the ad of the koala bear crawling up the business class stairs ... this may have been about the mid to late 70's
@spikie4 Right, this is early 70's. I flew with my family from SYD to SFO in 1972 in the 742 First cabin and I spend my time in the upper deck lounge as 7 year old chatting with the Canadian band the Guess Who. Food I remember was great and the true lounge appointments and view of the Pacific from up top.
Agreed...........somethings wrong there. Somebody f#%ked up. And Qantas didnt get any delivered until 1973. Nope- this is a seventies add for sure. Probably 75.
I remember those rubbery ear head sets and that 3 colour picture projector....colour tv im not sure if it was in mid 60's thought it was in late 60's early 70's..hmm..
This reminds me of the tv show Are you being served.

A simple world, pre-oil shock, pre-climate change, boundless optimism - it would be nice to go back to those days. sigh...

Definately early 70's. And that food was definately First Class. I remember the plastic trays of food in economy in 1974.

You can tell this was back in the old days, because there not mamy airlines that feed you like that any more, unless you in first class.

Hmmm...great ad, but it can't be 1965 as the aircraft (B747) didn't enter service until about 1970. Still, great footage, thanks for posting!
ads998 3 years ago 2
I agree. Plus, the women's hair and men's sideburns are too long for 1965 as well. I'd say early '70s too.
scottbaino 3 years ago
It is definitely not 1965. The the 747's maiden flight was February 9th, 1969. Qantas didn't start recieving any until 1971.
