I will ask Jane in this video to be Sec of Education. I would ask her to build a game for all American kids to play for a diploma as a 4th year collage level with all knowledge such a Level would entail via videos in game inventory & banking for storing money and game items. Learn all sciences , Math, make it fun with built in testing and demonstrations. Then give this game to the world. We could use the current teachers to help build it then not hire so many
wow nice job adding to the stereotypical gamer chick jane u ugly bitch and why does she wear the same cloths all the the time? at gdc she wore the same thing as she wore at this other conference last year her games must suck cause i never heard of her and shes obviously poor cause she were the same cloths
Thank you, slightly OT: but I'm tired of hearing other parents saying that video games are violent then them talking about how they are making their kids do sports like football and wrestling not to mention all the abuse ie drugs/steroids,breaking necks, gambling etc that pro/organized sports involves.
@halo6534 games included. You cannot say that playing games is not an experience which happens to you. Of course McGonigal can distinguish between realities, she is acknowledging how the two influence one another, for the constant, mediating in both, is yourself. Also, does it matter what clothes she's wearing, or how many she owns, assuming that success is represented by the size of your wardrobe is seriously incorrect. However all that aside, you resorted to calling someone a faggot...
@halo6534 on a youtube discussion. Try not to, it's offensive, use gay, or homosexual and don't use it to insult someone, that's about 10 years in the past brother.
By the way, appearance is subjective, you can't tell someone what they see, or say that some ones evaluation is wrong and yours right, you both have different eyes and different minds and therefore see different people. Moreover I don't see why her looks entered the discussion, she's talking about how work not her face.
@RyuuSkyez wow ur a fucking nerd video games are ment to entertain people not change the way we live inly a nerd with no life wood say something like that
@halo6534 Institute for the Future, is an organisation which receives funding from the World Bank Institute, to innovate and progress the discussion on video games, their applications, and potential place in the future. Their job is not to create the next best selling game, they are not a profiting organisation, their success is not measured in money but ideas. Everything we come into contact with influences and teaches us, we are the sum of our life experiences, no phenomena is less valuable...

I feel she also should mention that gamers are trained from a young age to do problem solving, often seriously complex problem solving. Different kinds of gamers are trained at different sorts of problem solving, and develop different skill sets.
F.ex. MMORPG gamers develop great collaborative skills and pursuit of longer term goals through hours of continual focus. RTS gamers process a huge amount of information and must optimize strategy and resources. FPS gamers work alone or in small groups,
@gulllars (continuation) FPS gamers work alone or in small groups, and must react acurately and quickly (almost instantly), have great spacial awareness, and analyze their enviroment for subtile clues in real time, and when working in groups must have great coordination and timing skills.
Turn based strategy gamers require a greater level of logic and deep thought to think through their strategies and anticipate what's coming many turns ahead.
Some gamers, like me, get mid+ at all these genres.
- just carrying on a particularly long post!... :D
The construction of narratives, whether that be of a night-elf variety or that of someone trying to benefit the rest of us through their own 'epic tale' of challenging adversity and supposition seems to me to be maybe slightly relevant...?
The thoughts of a slightly drunken Irish man with an inexcusable love of video games.
Jane, I really like your approach. Although, can I suggest that you take a wee look at the work of a guy called Shadd Maruna? He's a psychologist that specialises in developmental psychology - particularly regarding how ex-prisoners (those excluded, separated from "main-stream" society - ...i dunno, the disjuncture between 'gamers' and the rest of 'normal society'..?) construct a meaningful self-narrative for themselves that leads to an overwhelmingly pro-social outlook on their 'new life'.
Low risk, that is true. But, there are some games I've played where, if I die, I totally freak out. Games like Zelda: OOT, Dead Space, and when I get absolutely destroyed in Star Craft 2 ROFL.
On topic: I think Jane McGonigal is a genius. She's the next level of world guru for the coming decade.

@TheInfinite91 but when you die, you learn to deal with it and high chances are that you will keep trying again until you succeed.
