@MrTabby5000 Linux is faster than windows. Granted, it's graphics support is nowhere near the same, but that's it, ALL of Linux's filesystems beat the shit out of NTFS. Very little hardware is incompatible with Linux, but, do to the general lack of propietary software, the newest hardware is not supported because it takes time for the experts to code open source drivers and such, and out of use hardware becomes deprecated.
That's weird considering all the drivers on my netbook work fine. It boots about 20 seconds faster than when I had Windows XP on it, and it doesn't lag when I'm trying to do something as simple as opening a folder.
The only driver I had to get for my Asus G72GX was my graphics driver (proprietary NVidia driver). All I had to do to get it was take about a minute to install them from the software center.
@AmiableAdder 10.04 was SO BUGGY for me, lol. I've since updated to 10.10 Maverick Meerkat and I freaking love it! Basic folder navigation is so fast. File transfers, internet browsing, downloads, YouTube video loading and all that is a hell of allot faster on Ubuntu than any version of Windows I've seen.
Amazing OS.
PS: I hope they (Whoever develops it) get heavily into Wine so we can use some Windows apps on it.

Soon as they make that appstore on Linux, and programmers get paid, then there can be more programs. But the OS itself is rock solid, nothing wrong in it. No video editing software for Linux comes close to Final Cut Pro, free or paid for. I could go on and on, but I'm running out of character allocation for this post. Linux can easily become a great OS for any user with patience and perseverance. If you take the time to learn the the OS and learn the programs, it can grow quite enjoyable. But if you are impatient, then you only say "Linux sucks (because I don't know how to use it)" and quit in frustration. Sure Mac is better for Video and Audio production, and Windows is better for gaming (which would change rapidly if more people used Linux), but just about everything else Linux can do better/as well.

not sure why, but compiz was very laggy on my GeForce2 mx400, not sure if its an nvidia driver issue, but it was laggy (scrolling pages / rendering was slow) bear in mind the chipset in my motherboard is probably from ~2001 (athlon xp 1700+)
I don't mind complaining, I don't like XP (mac os is much better in every way, including the support for popular programs); but XP gets the job done, I can even theme it with shadows, a nice theme, and a dock and works effectively. Ubuntu, not sure about it

Anyone who plays games seriously on the PC simply CANNOT get away with using linux. There are some compatible games, but not nearly enough to make it viable. And Wine will only get you so far. It doesn't even come close to supporting most games.
All of the games sitting on my shelf are incompatible with linux except for maybe 2 or 3. And that's out of like 40 games. Not to mention I own a TON of games on Steam. A program that is, once again, incompatible with linux.
Hows that dependency hell? Sudo App - Get (general public can't understand that) the General public can't adapt even if you put a GUI on that shit. I mean unix isn't supposed to have a GUI. Also both Slackware and Debain (main distro bases) are buggy as hell. Tryed them both and a few of their derivitives.
Oh fuck you all, if you like Windows, Linux, or Macshitosh... If you want an easy life use Windows, if you want to spend your afternoons at home, use Linux, if you want to burst your RAM then use Macshit...What's so difficult?
actually, if you want an easy life (the easy way) use Ubuntu: it has a flat learning curve (only requirement is the ability to read and understand what you read), impressively big community (a place where your PROBLEMS have popped up and possibly have been SOLVED), and outstanding improvements since it first began.
If you want to spend your afternoons (and nights) at home COMPILE your software you will have choosen the hard way, but not only you'll (eventually) have MADE the BEST PERFORMING system around town, but you'll also end up with SKILL, something that can help you in life.
If you want to use Windows SPECIFIC software, or Software designed by Microsoft Partners (I have autocad in mind), you may choose Windows only system, dual boot or virtualization (I use virtualbox for some games -in 3D too!-, but I still have a WINXP partition on my laptop - I unwillingly purchased the licence, like most people do without realizing it, but I don't want the fuss of asking for a refund)
If you are USED to Windows and GOT SICK OF IT, like I did, you must UNDERSTAND that some APPLICATIONS do not work in Linux distros, they NEVER were DESIGNED TO WORK that way. The cool thing is there is a POPULATION of EQUIVALENT APPLICATIONS: some are very alike the ones you are familiar with, some are the same (like VLC) some are DIFFERENT IN CONCEPT.
once you decide to switch, you must realize that the process is not immediate: you will have to GET USED to the NEW WAYS OF DOING THINGS to feel comfortable.

Well I did try Linux, have done on and off for a few years now, but I always end up coming back to Windows because I find that Linux lacks in certain areas. Now if it was to address these issues then i would keep it on my hard drive, but not so. If it works for what you want then great, but it just doesn't make the grade for the over 90% of people out there.

Linux can easily become a great OS for any user with patience and perseverance. If you take the time to learn the the OS and learn the programs, it can grow quite enjoyable. But if you are impatient, then you only say "Linux sucks (because I don't know how to use it)" and quit in frustration. Sure Mac is better for Video and Audio production, and Windows is better for gaming (which would change rapidly if more people used Linux), but just about everything else Linux can do better/as well.

This isn't the way we need to talk about new people. We were all like that when we started using linux, we hated it! But it takes a willingness to learn everything from the beginning, because many of these people expect it to run just like windows, it it doesn't.
So, relax. Be patent with new people, they will either catch on, or they wont.

not sure why, but compiz was very laggy on my GeForce2 mx400, not sure if its an nvidia driver issue, but it was laggy (scrolling pages / rendering was slow) bear in mind the chipset in my motherboard is probably from ~2001 (athlon xp 1700+)
I don't mind complaining, I don't like XP (mac os is much better in every way, including the support for popular programs); but XP gets the job done, I can even theme it with shadows, a nice theme, and a dock and works effectively. Ubuntu, not sure about it

Anyone who plays games seriously on the PC simply CANNOT get away with using linux. There are some compatible games, but not nearly enough to make it viable. And Wine will only get you so far. It doesn't even come close to supporting most games.
All of the games sitting on my shelf are incompatible with linux except for maybe 2 or 3. And that's out of like 40 games. Not to mention I own a TON of games on Steam. A program that is, once again, incompatible with linux.

If you want to use Windows SPECIFIC software, or Software designed by Microsoft Partners (I have autocad in mind), you may choose Windows only system, dual boot or virtualization (I use virtualbox for some games -in 3D too!-, but I still have a WINXP partition on my laptop - I unwillingly purchased the licence, like most people do without realizing it, but I don't want the fuss of asking for a refund)

If you are USED to Windows and GOT SICK OF IT, like I did, you must UNDERSTAND that some APPLICATIONS do not work in Linux distros, they NEVER were DESIGNED TO WORK that way. The cool thing is there is a POPULATION of EQUIVALENT APPLICATIONS: some are very alike the ones you are familiar with, some are the same (like VLC) some are DIFFERENT IN CONCEPT.

Well I did try Linux, have done on and off for a few years now, but I always end up coming back to Windows because I find that Linux lacks in certain areas. Now if it was to address these issues then i would keep it on my hard drive, but not so. If it works for what you want then great, but it just doesn't make the grade for the over 90% of people out there.

I just installed linux on an old compaq evo 620c P4 and its fine,It seems that ubuntu 9.1developers are 5 years behind.
