Producer Jack Broder simply wanted to "cash in" on the public's appetite for "Martin & Lewis" movies by creating this one. He discovered Mitchell & Petrillo in a small night club outside Los Angeles, and built this movie around them. Naturally, Hal Wallis, Dean & Jerry's producer, did not want this released, and tried to persuade his poker playing friend Broder to abandon the picture- he refused. Jerry was angrier about Sammy's "impression" of him more than Dean was about Duke...
i'm so confused. so did these guys literally make a living off of imitating martin and lewis? i mean i understand impersonators but that's usually in clubs..or concerts...but these guys actually made movies? does anyone know what martin and lewis thought about these guys^?
watching this I'm reminded of the rob schneider episode of south park where they make fun of the trailers for rob schneider movies and watching this is like a rob schneider trailer. I can just imagine the goofy voice over guy saying: "he was just everyday party boy until one day he's about to wake up to be [brief pause] a brooklyn gorilla! and he's about to find out that being a brooklyn gorilla ain't as easy as it seems, sammy petrillo is a brooklyn gorilla! rated pg-13
Okay so was there a big fear of apes around the 30's-50's or something? There were ALOT of movies about them back then. I suppose it might have been somewhat because of King Kong, but The Monster Maker, The Ape Man, Murders in the Rue Morgue, The Gorilla, this (Lugosi was in the last hree as well), The Ape, Captive Wild Woman which had two sequels and so many more make one wonder. That said Lugosi is a role model for me for his serious acting even in roles like this. He deserved better though.
@balrog13571 I always figured the use of apes in horror/crime movies had to do with Edgar Allen Poe's story The Murders in the Rue Morgue, which was the first detective story ever printed, and then they find out the ape is the killer, that had to have a profound effect on people at the time.
Man, I can't believe how blatant of a Jerry Lewis imitation that was. It's one thing to imitate greatness. It's another to blatantly copy it. You don't compete with someone by stealing their gimmick.
You can't copyright "mannerisms". Saddest of all Lewis was so threatened by Sammy that he had him blacklisted. The REAL jerk is Jerry Lewis, a jerk his entire life. God Bless Sammy.

Well, if you gotta look like Jerry Lewis, might as well try and make some lemonade out of that particular lemon.

With all respect to Sammy fans, this guy was indeed a total ripoff of Jerry Lewis. Lewis didn't need to blacklist him, this movie was a flop.
