  • Excuse me. Any documentaries on Joyce's life without necessarily concentrating on a specific work? Just a general biographical piece? Thanks...

  • @Nonpeon You could watch the movie Nora.Although it is mostly an artistical rendering of James' relationship with his lover and (much)later wife,Nora Barnacle,it does feature a lot of interesting and sometimes touching biographical details. Also, you could go on reading Richard Ellmann's compelling and well know biography "James Joyce",as well as Stanislaus Joyce's "My brother's keeper".Enjoy!

  • @Kirillov23

    Thank you very much. :-)

  • James Joyce is great!!!!! F**king legend!!!! Don't judge unless you have experienced his writing for yourself! End of story!!!!!!

  • Dublin has to be the most boring and morbid town in the world and people who live there just dont know life or there own self worth its like a prison because almost every bar and food store has arrogant polish security gaurds on them and everyone judges you for simple things like the way you dress act behave walk and talk its SICK get the fuck out and live your life . You cannot express your true self in Dublin because the culture is so extremely different to everywhere.

  • James Joyce is my great great uncle =)

  • I would say reading Ulysses would be as complicated as an american reading the ross ocarroll kelly books lol

  • LOL... I could not say it better...

  • I'm thinking about reading Ulysses someday and I'm curious, when I do should I just try to enjoy the work and not stress about things I might not understand?

  • Ulysses has so many allusions and references, don't become overly preoccupied with catching every single thing. I would suggest an annotation of the novel to go along with your reading. I'm no expert but I enjoyed the Gabler edition.

  • aalent: I've heard/read that an annotation is a good way to read it.

Ulysses - The novel with a roadmap. ;)

  • Yes, just read it.

I say No! to annotated guides, they'll just bog you down. Read to enjoy. And if you enjoy it, THEN explore books that help explain it further.

  • seuil: Plus one could always reread it sometime after they've gone through it once. :)

  • Go with an Annotated on the 2 or 3rd reading.

  • The piano song is used in the movie 'Bloom'. Does anyone know who wrote it?

  • just check out the end credits

  • ulysses is one of the greatest pieces of literature EVER written

  • Ulysses, À la recherche du temps perdu, & Voyage au bout de la nuit. . .

  • Does anyone know where I can find the full video of this? It is fantastic.

  • I'm going to recommend this video to all my friends who can't get their heads around Ulysses.

  • joyce recognised how parochial and inward looking Ireland was, particularily Dublin... provincial, always looking to London for approvance, as it still does.. the jester in the court , the emerald in the ciggarrette box, the cracked looking glass of a servant. thats what RTE is, and the art... Patrick Ryan, u should have being an american football commentator

  • Ireland still looks to London, but also much to America and also inward and backward. Look at Patrick McCabe's books.

  • My favorites:

    JOYCE

    KAFKA

    CÉLINE

  • Quanto ti ho amato: maestro!!

  • i once did a poo in the sea

  • And your da did a pee in the sea which, when your mum saw when she sat in the sea, went home and did a poo in the loo which, when you found out, you gave a shout in the ear of a kraut who, when he heard you found a flea in his tea, which he held on his knee , when a bee from a tree by the sea.....

  • Goodstuff. I'm surprised no-one has commented on this. Oh well. Good little summary of Ulysses. Now I know what the stairhead of Martello Tower looks like. Cool...
