@afser he's on beat, however, he's improvising with tango moves in the middle of a salsa social dance. Tango isn't danced on the beat it's danced through the beat in phrases. So it seems like he's off the beat. When one improvises anything goes as long as it doesn't disrupt the partnership and your improv ends on timing. That's the difference between learning patterns and steps in the studio and taking your dancing to the next level.

From watching some his other videos posted on you tube, he seems to be some what repetitive. This style of dancing is unfortunately what you see a lot of in west coast salsa performances where you see a lot of tricks and very little interpretation of the actual dance which is Mambo.
I wont hate on Alex..used to be an Alex fan when i first started dancing. His style nor his moves have changed much over the years - he dances the same way to fast or slow music.
Now I prefer to watch people like Frankie Martinez social dancing..awesome body movements & isolation and music interpretition. Social dancing aside, Alex is still a great choreographer and peformer.
By the way, the name of the girl is Alién and she is a terrific instructor. Patient, compromised and doesn´t just show herself. I took a class with both of them, and well Alién is much better than Alex.
i watched her class with alex and talked to her after the class. very down to earth and a good teacher. alex is also a cool cat. why all this noise about the way he dances??? just leave the guy to do his own thing after all he brings diversity into the salsa scene.

Its all good! If we are to be totally honest.Lots of the video clips we see even from the famous and respected dance instructors show them dance straight through the music. The moves are very stylish and contemporary but at times lack feel, rhythm and connection with great salsa beats. Unless it is a Show rehearsed 50*

Those who can do. Those who cannot imitate the usual common moves. They could be practising the moves for an upcoming show while social dancing or entertaining the crowd or dancing for the camera.

That's true that videos on youtube are desynchronised often. But I've seen Alex live and he is not dancing to rhythm as well. I will upload some video of him from my camera soon so you might see it.
The answer to this mystery is that when he pulls off stunts as cool as the one at 1:44 in this video, you have to forgive him for being off time. This is the special Alex da Silva Exception to the "Always dance on time and to the music" rule. Yes, it would be even better if he did the stunts on time, but ya can't have everything :)

Her skirt got caught with the heel, there is nothing he could've done about it. He just waited until she was ready to keep going.
I've been in the same situation and that is totally fine.
(And I'm not an Alex fan, but in this case, i don't think he did anything wrong)

We cannot know whether he was on the beat or not. Too often these videos lose audio sync, so it could be a problem in the video and not the dancer.
And know that I look closely, he seems to be in sync with other dancers, so he is probably on the beat as he should.
