Tennis was not an Olympic sport when Connors played. Connors won the US open on grass, clay, and hard courts. Connors had an all-court attacking game, Agassi stayed mostly on the baseline.
pitbull, You have got to be kidding. Connors ranks higher than Agassi in the tennis pantheon. Let's start with 106 victories, and then move on to weeks at number 1.
@tacprc or we could discuss who was the more complete player? or who won a gold medal? excellence and greatness can be measured in different ways. this is why so much debate is currently surrounding fed-nadal
anyone that worked as a volunteer at a tournament know that agassi was a diva, screaming at tournament officials regarding playing times, practice courts, etc... berating lines people. boris becker summed up what players thought of agassi, and no one has ever bashed boris becker, he had huge respect by his peers.
such dumb, wrong comments below; this was their 2nd match at the Open in 1989 in the quarterfinals. Jimmy lost to Andre the year before in the qtrs in straight sets. This match was much different, going the distance at 5 sets. Connors is 37 here...looks pretty damn good vs. a very young Andre, most would agree.
The connors Agassi relationship soured backin the late 80's when Connors and Agassi met n the US Open Semi's. Jimmy ended up losing like straight sets 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. A few days later a reporter asked Connors what he thought about Agassi having predicted the win - which ticked off Connors
A few weeks later Connors and Agassi ended up being seeded against each other again. The reporter described the situation as Connors the elder Statesman, handing off the torch to Agassi, the up and comer for the USA. The reporter said, "In fact you are 36 ad Agassi is like 19. You could be his father."
To which Connors replied, "Maybe I am, I spent a lot of time in Vegas in the 70's!!!!"
That's like saying to Agassi, I did your Mother...
Connors weak shot was always his forward flat down the line. Connors always hit his shots flat and hard. Their was never any topspin. When he hit the ball hard and flat, the ball stayed down - unless it was on the line, and then it would skid and stay down. Try do something with that - especially when Connors hit it deep in the corner at you. Only a few could, namely Borg and McEnroe. It was also the reason Connors had so much longevity in a sport where people retire at 30....
Boy does Connors come off as a huge jerk in Agassi's new book. The only pro in the locker room that did not applaud after Agassi's final match? Connors.
Wow....yeah, well you know Jimbo's character unfortunately, especially if it isn't about himself. When Agassi was establishing himself about the time of this vid, he was being compared to a modern-day Connors and Connors seethed at that! So it doesn't surprise me that Jimmy didn't applaud.
He probably couldnt stand the site of a grown man balling like a p*ssy and blowing kisses to the crowd for twenty mins on court. There is no crying in Tennis. Man up Andre you meth head you
More likely he still remembered being destroyed by Agassi in the U.S. Open semifinals. We know now that Agassi actually toyed with Connors in that match, purposely moving him from side to side just for the hell of it. Gotta love it.
Way to toy with a guy 18 yrs older than him. Reminds me of the great Benjerman Becker toying with methy at his last cryfest in 06. Ask him about who Jason Streisand is, the real reason he "dated" his mother. Can you say Beard?
Yes, Connors had it coming, and Agassi enjoyed thrashing and embarrassing the man that is universally recognized as the foremost asshole of tennis -- Jimmy Connors.
Yep, Agassi is the biggest philanthropist in sports and Connors is the biggest asshole. Two radically different legacies to be sure.
You clearly are an Agassi troll, and an ignorant one at that. I suggest you go back to your vintage Agassi poster and masturbate, because your crush is glaringly obvious.
You would not even know about Agassi's brief drug use if he did not make it known in the book. Yes, he's going to devote millions of his own money and countless hours to a PR stunt. Yep.
Incidentally, if you believe that Connors did not do plenty of cocaine in the 1970s and 80s, you are incredibly naive.
All you are doing is regurgitating what you read in his book, Connors didnt do drugs as seeing he played until he was in his 40's while your lil buddy flamed out earlier. Connors was making slam semis at 39 while Andre at 39 cant beat Todd "Lurch" Martin at a senior event. AA also got popped for roids after his 99 French Open win but had it covered up as it would make the game look horrible. See Gil Reyes, think he does any roids, now hes got Verdasco on them and hes suddenly a top 10 player.
@conndogg79 yep. no doubt agassi did roids. he goes from this skinny little kid to a full bearded hairy monster in a year. look at him in 88-89 and look at the guy in the 1990 final of the french. plus, what about losing your hair at 17? give me a break, agassi got away with almost as much as stuff as OJ.
His brother started losing his hair at pretty much the same age. I know loads of people whose hair started to go at that age. It's genetic: how your hair follicles react to male hormones.
@robertk2007 Not sure where you get that impression. I assume you have not "asked most people who played with Agassi." If that is the case, you are someone extremely close to pro tennis.
I have read a LOT about Agassi. I was a ball boy for a long time, and I was also a linesman into my late 20s -- all of this during Agassi's career. I never heard anything overly negative about AA. Not the case with JC.
AA has also been incredibly charitable in retirement. Again, not true with JC. Take care.
Agassi achieved a career golden slam despite having a period taking crystal meth. Isn't that like winning an Olympic sprint despite having been out drinking the night before? Sign of a REAL man if you ask me. :)
Was that Agassi's real hair? When did he start going bald?

@conndogg79
That's mainly because Agassi was born with a congenital spine disorder that made the last few years of his playing career hellishly painful.
Many players retire at the age of 30, so by going until 36 Agassi went a lot further than most.
