The United States did not lose the war of 1812. Washington was burned down, but the war went on after that. The United States, in fact, returned the favor and burned down York. The Treaty of Ghent restored the status quo and both sides were left primarily where they were before the war (although the US did gain fishing rights, and their concerns about American sailors being forced into the Royal Navy was moot since Britain's wars had subsided).
