  • Cool

  • "hey could you grab me a drink? i mean i know im only flying a huge jet with another giant space craft attached to it but it be so nice if you could help" lol how do you get that job i wonder......lol

  • I looked up and saw this once in the 80's over New York. It was probably just the Enterprise but it was cool to see.

  • Absolutely fabulous. I get goose bumps the size of oranges watching this video. Thanks for sharing!

  • I think the shuttle was actually heavier than the Boeing 747. It's wonderful to see how that plane can carry so much.

  • But according to Official statements, the SHUTTLE IS NO MORE HEAVIER FOR THE 747 THANKS TO MODERN DESIGNS

  • che tenero *_*

  • VIDEO DE POCA MADRE NO?

  • Get a room you two!

  • The shuttle is roughly the size of a DC-9

  • Actually, 2.5 Roughly size than de DC-9, that's true according to official statements

  • o_O^

  • ma continua a salire o rimane cabrato per volare livellato?

  • ma che te sei magnato? un libro de meccanica del volo? xD

  • IoI

  • So did the shuttle enjoy the ride?

  • More than you think

  • Seeing one chase plane in the footage at times was interesting. I also liked the close up footage as the filming chase plane moved from one side to the other. I would have liked to see a landing too, however. The 747 pilot must be top notch for this job.

  • Great job,NASA YOU GOT IT.

  • wow.. watching it was boring.

  • what the

  • its a joke NASA have all this techology but caint

    send humans to the moon

  • Thats what you think. Its going to happen -again.-

  • i know in the year 2020s i think they r takin the piss

  • Machine porn, lol

  • they are totally doing it!

  • haha, good one

  • why don't they just disassemble it and carry it inside the plane ?

  • its for transport ... are u dumb or what?

  • the shuttle wont start when its up that plane ... its just for transport

  • They don't watch news that's why they are idiots...dumb.

  • another photo op?

  • are you an idiot? they are transporting the plane back to florida. people are soo damn stupid these days. what a waste to society.

  • The 747 is modified so it could have been remade to withstand the temperatures. It might even be able to withstand those temps for a while as stock.

  • what exactly are you implying by saying its bullshit? that the video is fake or something?

  • can sum1 please tell me y they have done put a smaller plane on top of a bigger one??????

  • ..another creationist.

  • it's not a small plane it's a space shuttle and they put on the boeing (the big plane) to transport it

  • A fine video. I expected it to drop that small one. ☺

  • Lol shuttle on plane sex :P

  • buono...

  • I want to know that how they placed the small one on the top of big one?

  • What is the purpose of placing a shuttle on a 747?

  • Transporting it from west coast to east coast

  • less fuel for the shuttle to take off. its better this way then taking off vertically

  • I wonder if, and I'm just asking, mind you, if, since the shuttle isn't being used for anything other than a passenger during this time, if I could ride along, in the shuttle's pilot seat.

    :)

  • me too :D

  • The true amazing part is take off and landing. Oh and I'd like to see how they put the shuttle on the plane, and how it is attached.

  • Yes this is pretty amazing, however once in flight the wings on the space shuttle are helping the flight along, the space shuttle doesn't actually weigh as much in flight as it does on the ground, because the wings are creating their own lift.

No the shuttles wings aren't the best, but they are helping out, and for those of you that will say something, weight is relative to gravity, yes the shuttles mass is the same, but it will weigh less in relationship to the plane once in flight.

  • the funny thing is the wings are only designed for upwards thrust and landing....... if nobody told you yet theres no air in space so what would be the point of fitting wings that give lift? secondly, the split tail on the boeing..... thats so the plane can still have manouverability with the shuttle on it, please read into these things before leaving comments like that

  • Actually the shuttle's weight didn't change anymore than 747's did. The correct phrasing is that the shuttle's wings are generating lift, which is correct. But on the whole, the shuttle creates a lot of drag which probably cancels out the helpfulness of the wings

  • whoa. i just noticed the cover that goes over the engines.

does anyone know wut thats made of? cus i can imagine that it waays down the plane quite a lot.

  • Are you serious? You are gay.

  • Btw, the guy i was responding to said in his comment:

"These planes are gay!" which i dont understand as both of these planes/shuttles are two of the most revolutionary aircraft ever built.

  • You're asking me if I'm serious? Do you honestly think it's possible for shuttles to be gay you dimwit.. Get a life!

  • Dude, you are just another stupid idiot on youtube that cant think of a decent comeback and decides to just say that they meant something else in their comment than what they really meant. Gay nowadays is used to describe something as lame or stupid, kind of like you.

  • You obviously are another idiot on youtube(troll) who cant use their brain and says pointless idiotic things as you did before and now. Btw it's also very obvious you meant gay as lame/stupid, kind of like yourself.

  • Are you gonna start crying now?

  • No, never type a comment again because after reading all of your comments in this video i can tell you are a complete idiot. Your mommy would be doing us a big favor by not letting you go on youtube anymore little boy.

  • LMAO.. You even answered me, lol... You're a 1st class idiot!

  • Comment removed

  • cool

  • Now if the shuttle could take off from the plane; Thats something I would watch!

  • Yes, I dont really get this whole thing, if its not taking off from the plane then why isnt it being shipped by boat

  • "I dont really get this whole thing, if its not taking off from the plane then why isnt it being shipped by boat"

For starters, you can relocate something much faster using a plane, also boats usually only work when you're near water. I suppose people going to Hawaii should also take boats using your idiotic logic.

  • Yeah, the guy is stupid.

1st Rocket fuel costs way more than jet fuel

2nd Rockets burn anything behind it and launching it from a plane would burn the back and possibly crash it

3rd You cant control the speed of rockets unlike jets

4th If you shipped it, it would cost more and you would have to drive the ship through the panama canal which would take 1-3 weeks because theyre taking it from California to Florida

People need to use their brains before they use their mouths(or hands in this case)

  • lol. Are you serious? "Why isn't it being shipped by boat?" Ummm, because boats don't travel across land? Ever see the Shuttle land? It's either in the desert or in Florida right next to the base... And when it lands in the desert... need we explain more?

  • Why dont you think of how shuttles work and how its mounted. Seriously some people dont use common sense before posting comments.

  • Check out the Wikipedia page for the Space Shuttle Enterprise which was used for Approach and Landing Tests in the late 70's. That's basically what they did: Took the shuttle up to a certain altitude, dove the 747 and released the shuttle.

None of the space-qualified shuttles did this, just the test models. I remember watching these tests in high school.

  • Who cares dude, It's Youtube, not an English test!

  • Shhh.

  • what a waste of 10 mins

  • and you couldn't tell after 3mins what it was going to be like? lol

  • It took you 3 mins? LMFAO It only took me 1 min

  • Why did it take you 10 minutes to realize you weren't into it? Did you think there was a twist at the end?

  • I said it was a waste of 10 mins I didn't say I was there watching it for 10 mins.

  • Haha. Ok wiggled your way out of that one.

  • kewl video, but should have ended after 1.25 minutes instead of 9.5 minutes

  • maybe, but do we really care about youtubes hd space?. and you can just stop the video. And then there's another person who hates the title. haha. people on yt are so funny. and finally me who comments on it all, lol.

  • Awesome stuff never seen something like that in my life!

  • lol jackytothe :P and blkpopeye chill know ones hating :P

  • I'm sure that didn't cost much ..talk about a white elephant.

  • Wow....so thats how planes do it.....Bit like dogs really...

  • hahaha, ya thats how babies(planes) are made...

  • To musí stát ale peněz :-(

  • airplane matting season?

  • wait a minute... Am i watching Superman Returns again...

  • ha,

  • Call em what you wiil (don't hate!) But I love my women as big as I can get them!!!!!!!

  • I do not understand your comment. Unless its a joke? I mean you say things like everyone is ugly in America... that means you are too? for the fact that America is multicultural and there is at least one person representing your nation. You say everyone is fat but im not.. and I'm not obese as well... although in my definition fat and obese are the same. So i negatived your statement.

  • Shuttles will be retired in the year 2010 and will be replaced with a new spacecraft

  • only in America...

  • show!!

  • awesome

  • lol damn thats heavy

  • I love seeing the shuttle piggybacked on that 747. It might be the last time we see it with the shuttles retirement soon. :(

  • wait are we retiring all shuttles?

  • see the wings directly over other wings, its jut like a big biplane.probably more stable than on there own.thanks nasa.

  • Woe ! it almost felt like that thing wasn't going up in the air !

  • Thanks NASA for everything

  • the russians built a bigazz plane to carry their spaceshuttle... too bad it never gets used...

  • I would love to be that F-18 (I think that's what it was) pilot following the 747 and shuttle the whole way.

  • It's a T-38. Astronauts use them to train and get around in.

  • Comment removed

  • he's there to catch it if it falls off...

Or shoot it down if it tries to fly away like in 007Moonraker!

  • Comment removed

  • this one reason i love this great country

  • wait, I have another one.

If it aint Boeing even NASA aint going.

  • Once again Boeing carries the rest of the industry.

  • Awesome. And the take-off is breath taking. When you watch it, you think it won't be able to take off. Great stuff NASA. And thanks for keeping everyone so well informed.

  • A beautiful sight. I'd like to see a video of them attaching the shuttle to the 747, how they lift and secure it.

  • Yes, that would be VERY interesting to see, spotofbother.

  • simple amazing...

  • SUPER BIRDS!

  • My very favorite airplane, the Boeing 747, carrying the amazing shuttle that first amazed me as a kid. Awesome!

  • where is she goin?

  • Back to kennedy or houston I believe

  • Kennedy

  • Florida it said on NASA, so yeah Kennedy. Thanks.

  • amazing ;-)

  • The Jet Pilot was flying really close at 4:00!

  • how high did they have to go?

  • 15,000 ft

  • This has always been one of the dopest things to me.

  • nice

  • Very cool to watch. I'm surprised at how short of a runway it needed to take off (not as much distance as I thought it would).

Wondering though what it's flight ceiling is.

  • What a great video. Thanks for sharing. I follow this on Twitter. Cat, Chaps and Emma

  • WOW, tbh.

  • What is that thing at the back of the shuttle? Is that there due to some aerodynamics issue?

I think there should be a description of what this is, why is this being done, why is this important etc, along with some details of the "exercise". Otherwise this is not very informative...

But it looks pretty cool anyway!

  • having that great lump stuck on top of it probably makes it very unstable and unbalanced, I think the cap on the back just makes it more streamlined and smooth

  • Thank you. It makes sense, but it just doesn't look that well adjusted to the shape of the shuttle from what I can see in the video...

Do you know what the "exercise" is for? I was half expecting them to release the shuttle so the could practice the landing, but apparently they didn't do it...

  • You have probably figured this out butt this is not an exercise. The astronauts couldn't land in Florida last Saturday due to weather conditions and landed in California instead. This is to take the shuttle back to its home: Florida.

  • Indeed, I was poorly informed about this

Thanks for enlightening me about it!

I am glad that there is a description of the video now also.

  • Comment removed

  • A second thought: it does seem well adjusted! As we can see at 2:00. The difference in the painting is what made me think it was not well smoothly patched, but it really looks like it is now! :-)

  • it is to keep the engines safe during the flight and during any actions involving the shuttle itself.

  • Are you sure? I mean, the engines don't seem exposed, since they are facing backwards.

  • Engines are not backwards. There is a cap there for protection.

  • I was referring to the fact that they don't look forward.

There was no need to be rude, man. I don't follow up these news, nor does the media here in Brazil. That is why I was looking for a video description to find out what this was about.

  • Cap is also there probably to make a more streamline profile and reduce turbulence behind the shuttle- otherwise reducing stability and control from the tail... also why they'd add those extra fins to the tailplane.

  • Imagine this is your car. A very expensive one. Would you leave it onto the open just like that. You would cover it or put it in a garage. What else do you think that is for? It is for protection and safe carriage to its destination.

  • The back of the shuttle is not exposed to the wind.

Besides, we know what kind of turbulence it can endure during the launch, so that riding on the top of a commercial plane is just a ride, right?

By the shape of the cover, it really looks more like an aerodynamics aide to the rudder.

No, I don't think they are just treating the shuttle like a pet car.

  • may be you should ask the people who build it. They will tell you for sure.

  • NASA MEMBERS & BOEING

  • More than half of the Shuttle flights have landed back at Florida. They only go to Edwards if the weather is bad in Florida at landing time.

  • Comment removed

  • Atlantis had to land at Edwards Air Force Base in California. It had already delayed it's landing in Florida for nearly two days due to weather. California is the first choice of alternate landing sites for Shuttle when it can't land in Florida. :o)

  • An awesome site. They would have prefered to land back at Kennedy Space Center, but after 2 days of weather delays, they had to land at Edwards and ferry the shuttle via the 747 back to KSC.

  • lol owned ^^^

  • thank you thank you, i try my best

  • Great video! I hope to watch it land when it arrives in Florida!

  • I tracked the flight on Flight Explorer. Believe the chase plane doing the vid was an F-18 (two seat model) since it also showed up. Great vid.

  • I think because the weather in Florida was raining.

  • wow

  • Thank you NASA

  • wonder how fast the carrier plane has to start off to get to flight with that kind of heafy burden on top, looks amazing

  • Safe journey, Atlantis, you magnificent bird.

Humorous trivia: the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft has a sign on the mounting post that says "Attach orbiter here -- Black side down". There's a snapshot of it on wikipedia.

  • Freaking awesome!!

but I ask again why no sound....

  • There is sound, its just rather quiet.

  • I feel silly I forgot I had my headphones plugged in...

  • great footage from the chase plane!

  • Sweet an escort! Go NASA and go America!!!

  • I wonder what type of training those B747-200 pilots have to go through...

  • Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's not THAT much different to pilot it with shuttle on top. Shuttle itself is kind of a glider, so after reaching certain speed it should feel as stable as plane without shuttle. But landing could be very tricky, especially with stronger crosswinds.

  • Yeah plaukaspyragely,

you're probably right in that it's probably not all that different, but there are a lot of factors that change, the Center of Gravity of the plane is moved a lot higher, making it less stable, plus the landings probably have to be quite smooth too. But you're probably right about the Shuttle producing it's own lift at a certain speed :P.
