I remember this from when I was a kid in the early '70s. Of course I didn't know what the hell VD was and I used to go through the house singing this! Once I did it when the insurance man was visiting...my old man put the kibosh on that double quick...
I sang it because I was 7-8 years old and I thought it was catchy. I also sang a version of it with my older step-brother's name in it...he was pissed to say the least.
"I heard if you douche with Diet Coke after sex, you can't get pregnant." --actually said by a girl in my health class in high school. Who says you can't learn anything from a PSA?
Reminds me of the Herpes commercials we have now that make it seem that you can have an exciting life with lots of interesting things to do if you suffer from the herp.
Cures for stds only occurred with the invention of Penicillian in the 1940s.. many people went insane from syphallis and died of ghonorrhea much less other STDS ... today cervical cancer is caused by HPV which is an STD.. we have innoculations for it now...when people are about 10
because many children are born with STDs too when the parents do not take care of themselves... often syphallis caused insanity ..it use to be called inherited insanity.
The shock was not that people wanted it.. but that anyone even the government would have the nerve to talk about sex in any way or form on tv , even for health.. at that time VD was skyrocketing from the 1960s sexual revolution, it was epidemic proportions..in just a few more years.. AIDS will have shown up.. People felt sex was free of any responsbility... Jim Morrison and all the commune crowd.
Matthew - the general idea of the commercial was a good one. As you said, it's trying to dispel the idea that only certain people get venereal diseases. But it's awful in that it doesn't educate at all, it just confuses the crap out of the viewer. I can't tell you how many people I've talked to who remembered that ad from their childhood, simply because they got so incredibly confused and started asking their parents and teachers how to get VD so they too could be happy.
I can't quite put my finger on why this ad bugs me. I think it's the background music. It sounds like it's better suited for an early 1970s deodorant commercial or a soft drink commercial. Anyway, I think it's horrible. Just my opinion, though.
I understand, but it was made in 1969, and that song was an old 1940's song sung by Sophie Tucker , who did tours to entertain the troups in WW2 ,,it was a very noty tune in its day
I was a teenager and watched this and am and was gay and never had a STD in my life, I think I paid attention and this helped.

Does anyone else find it creepy that she sings "Anyone can share VD..." right when the young teenage girl is smiling sexily at the audience?

Old people have sex, too, and most VD can be passed onto babies when before/during birth.

What a horrible public service ad.

i think it's a great one - it dispels the (then) common idea that only certain types of people get STD"s...

Why is it horrible?, I think it should never have been removed from the public eye, the Christian Coalition had it removed .
