  • Thanks for explaining what the song is about. This song means more to me (now that I have come out as Transsexual). It's almost as if Matt is talking about lots of the bigotied crap we have to deal with day in day out like lots of gay people do. It is a great tribute & a great song. I've often wondered why there was never a video made as it stirs up some real images in my head when I hear this song.

  • Wherever you are Matthew, hope you'll never have to suffer through such cruelty again!

  • Does anyone know to whom this song is dedicated? The shepard? I would like to know since it feels like a really heart-felt song and i am in ignorance :x

  • @thebitchishungry This song is dedicated to Matthew Shepard, he was only 21 years old, he was decieved, he was getting a ride home from 2 men, they took him into a hidden area, tied him to a fence robbed him and beat him severely and left him to die, he was a target because he was gay. The reason matt says "scarecrow" is because their was a person jogging the next day and he was the 1 who found him and at first he thought he was a scarecrow. His wounds were too severe, he sadly passed away.

  • @megapretzel How sad :\ Thank you for letting me know ;)

  • im addicted to this song right now

  • Epic fucking jam!! Get Stoked\m/

  • Awsummmmm

  • this song...is the song!

  • Awesome! Get Stoked\m/

  • R.I.P Matthew Shepard sorry that you had to die for peoples ignorance

  • i dont usually listen to Trivium but im glad they made this song

  • Now, quite personally, I am a Christian, and it is rather disturbing the way the WBC treated Matthew. I would hope that people understand that not all Christians are terrible. In fact, I would argue that those people at the WBC were not Christians in the true sense of the word. God take Matthew and may his soul rest easily. And, quite frankly, even if you do not believe in an afterlife, being dead is still probably more pleasant than being alive.

  • @metalguitarist321 What does WBC exactly stand for and what did they do to Matthew? I am atheist and, to be honest, I very rarely come across such a reasonable Christian like yourself. Didn't mean to offend or anything but that's just how I see it and I think you might agree. Peace

  • @Qminoo WBC stands for Westboro Baptist Church, and they protested his funeral with homosexual slurs and vulgar names. And thank you, I appreciate it. The problem with religion today is that it has become all about the institution and not about true belief. True Christians do not discriminate. In fact, the oldest texts of the Bible are not homophobic like so many translated versions are today. Also, as a transcendental idealist, I believe that all metaphysical beliefs are faith based.

  • @metalguitarist321 Wow, that's so out of place. What you've said is so true. Today, it's all about the institution rather than belief itself. People, as always, just wanna get some more money so they can sit on their asses a little longer and not care about anyone else. Cool. Well, we've all got our little unique look at the world. :)

  • this song has such strong lyrics, i love it.

  • en wikipedia orgSwikiSMatthew_Shepard

Replace all spaces with a period and all S with a forward slash (/). This is the guy the song was made in memory of.

  • Rest In Peace Matthew Shepard.

  • Fred Phelps, leader of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas, took his church's "God Hates Fags" message to the funeral of Matthew Shepard, held in Casper, Wyoming, on Saturday, October 17, 1998. Two of his picket signs read: "No Tears for Queers" and "Fag Matt in Hell." This guy is someone else that everyone can hate almost as much as Henderson and McKinney. I hope they all rot in hell.

  • @KDR466 I don't believe there is a heaven or a hell. But if there are, I seriously hope all people of the WBC spend the rest of eternity in the most unbearable suffering. I seriously hate those guys, they're pure scum.

  • @Shady32 same here. i don't believe in them either and completely agree with you

  • @Shady32 agreed!

  • @KDR466 Those sick fucks! Ironic how churches claim they love everyone of their children. AND THEN, they say there's no place for gays. Sick garbage, i hope everyone from the WBC die in the most painful way possible. Fucking hypocrites every goddamn one of them!

  • @Incineratethemartyrs i completely agree. our world is so fucked up. that's why i don't believe in any religion. it's all bullshit. if there were a god, or gods for the people who believe in more than one, there would be no hate, no war no drama, nothing. now, i'm not trying to hate on anyone who is religious, it's there choice, but that's what i believe. it's a waste of time and bullshit.

  • @KDR466 yes! unless hes a sick fucked up god

  • @mitchmoberly1 after everything i've been taught, god is the most demented, twisted, sick thing ever even though of. slavery, wars... not needed, but caused because of this so called "god". seriously, this entire world would be really different, and better.

  • @KDR466 I dont really like the world either I even made a music video about it.

  • @KDR466 How can someone picket a FUNERAL?

And how the hell are those guys still allowed to protest? I know it's free speech and all, but those guys make me sick.

  • @KDR466 not to mention, this is the same hate Hitler was motivated by against the Jews. There is no reason for it, just ignorence.

  • One of their best songs :DDD

  • goosd song

  • trivium is amazing man i love every album theyve made

  • All of their album covers remind me of Magic: The Gathering.

    Friggin' awesome.

  • I wonder if his parents have heard this song? A great tribute

  • @bbishop88 Matthew's pronounced dead time. They call him scarecrow in the song, because the cyclist that found him, tied to the fence and in a coma, thought it was a scarecrow at first. Wiki Matthew Shepherd. This kind of ignorance and brutality needs to stop. Everyone should mind their OWN business. If people can't do that, then accept the fact that we're ALL brothers and sisters, and take care of each other.

  • This is one of the best albums i've ever fucking heard, one of the best bands i've ever had to come upon, thank you Trivium for keeping heavy metal the best music there is!

  • It's songs like this one that make me wonder how people bashed The Crusade. In my opinion, this album is still fantastic. I can't think of a single song, except maybe The Rising, that I would consider less than excellent from this album.

  • Death penalty for homophobes!

  • any one knows who is refering to that died in october 12th at 12:53am?

  • @ILmans666

    Matthew Shepard

  • This album is very different from the other ones, but that doesnt make it bad. highly underrated. We Are The Fire kicks fucking ass! so do most of the other songs on this album! Granted, this isn't my favorite album, but, its still Trivium... which means its still earsex to listen to it. Trivium 4 life \m/

  • This album blew my mind when I was a Freshman in high school, and still does. Classic.

  • <3

  • who have died in october 12th?

  • @ILmans666 I asked myself the same thing, I remember on the news about 10 or so years ago that this kid named Matthew Shepard was beat to death by classmates for being homosexual. If im not mistaking this was one of the events that helped created the hate crime laws in our country. Until watching this video I never knew this songs was about him, but "12:53am October 12th, when the Shepard died" kinda gave it away.

  • Trivium's most beautiful solo.

  • Check my Channel for a 30-second preview of every song off the new album In Waves.

  • I personally and dont bash me for this but i think even the idea of homosexuality is gross. But killing and torturing someone for it is horrible. Great song

  • Why are people crying over this? Heafy wasn't trying to mimic Hetfield in the Crusade. After Ascendancy, he strained his vocal cords and had to take it easy on the screaming. That's it.

  • IMO... IN MY OPINION!... it seemed to me that on The Crusade Matt Heafy wasn't really hitting the mark with the lyrics, compared to later albums. This particular song has the best lyrics, on the cd musically they are all amazing but i think they are lyrically weak this go.

  • man knowing what the song was about makes it so sad to hear

  • Tied to the fence as they rape you....

  • I remember the Matthew Shepard murder growing up in the nineties. Every time I hear this song, it brings me back to 98'. I was only twelve, but for some reason, the death of Matthew Shepard was really one the first time I ever found myself without faith for humanity as a whole. The thought that such prejudice is still enough of an issue to write music on its behalf definitely makes a tragic statement about the world in which we live.

  • @igashijin Humanity is wound up in destruction, peace is almost like a forgotten way of life now. Music is the only real peace a person can get; this song pulls all of my remaining faith for humanity into one bundle.

i hope some day i will be able to change the way the world thinks, back to peace.

  • Well, Shogun and Ascendancy were MUCH better. In this album Trivium tried to be something they aren't - Metallica.

  • @Szamot97 You on that wagon too bro? This album sounds nothing like Metallica.

  • @ChaosGod87 You can ehar very heavily in Heafy's vocals that he was going for a James hetfield voice, the intruments dont sound liek metallica, but hus voice does alot

  • @Szamot97 Explain .. how were Trivium trying to be Metallica in The Crusade?

  • @cjay606 The instruments arent like emtallica, but Matt's voice sounds ALOT like 90s James Hetfield, thats all

  • @redwing104 Metallica*

  • how does this song have 7 dislikes?? it is apparent to me that 7 people are deaf

  • god, so fucking boring.

  • This is maybe the best song about what tolerance mean! Trivium has other songs about intolerance like "A gunshot to the head of trepidation" but this stands above all I've heard. Great meaningful lyrics which could really change your mind/opinion/reason.

  • @XNorrinxRaddX You're one of those government close-minded creatures ;)

  • I love this song...Trivium kicks ass!

  • 7 people are sad

  • Duuuuude. I've known the lyrics to the song for ages. JUST realized what it was about. Damn...deep shit

  • @metalligeek093 dude me too, i put this cd in my car a few weeks back and actually listened closely and I came to an epiphany and I was like NO WAY this is totally about matthew shepard. such a sad song but amazing song and its terrible what happened to him and im glad trivium is getting the word out there good for them!

  • this whole album kicks ass

  • Wasnt this about a gay man who was murdered?

  • @turd111111 Yeah - Matthew Shepard who died in 1998 at the age of 21

  • favorite song of this album

  • This song sends chills down my spine every time I hear it. It really captures what happened. I grew up in Colorado and remembered hearing everything about the murder. It is a sad world we live in.

  • I listened to this in school this morning, and I almost cried. Strange.

  • @ShelbySarles happens to me every time i listen to it. don't worry.

  • This isn't Matt's greatest vocal piece, but it's amazing all the same. I love the meaning. I love the fact that Trivium can have songs like this, with great meaning to them, and fun songs like To the Rats on one album.

  • im using the idea of wolves and the scarecrow for my final peice in my art course . . . if it wasnt for Trivium, i would be lost.

if anyone has seen 'to kill a mockingbird' they will understand why im using this idea :)

  • usually metal is a close minded gentre of music... I am a metal fun but i have to admit that... I give my grats to trivium about that rage expression!

    Lovely song!

  • @Anandros1 Hmm I would not say that close minded...sure there is a redneck white trash aspect to certain types of metal (I believe we have pantera to thank for that) but metals roots are very much left wing. Hell one of the most famous (and influential) metal vocalists of all time is openly gay and most people dont give a shit, he still literally has the title of 'metal god', can you imagine something like that being accepted in say rap?

  • @MetalguitarlessonsUK which metal vocalist are you talking about?

  • @equilibrium24 Rob Halford

  • @MetalguitarlessonsUK judaspriest for the fucking win son!

  • @demondim5 Daaaaaaaaamn right!

  • @demondim5 Lol you talk like a rapper.

  • @MetalguitarlessonsUK what u fag cock cheese suckn heap of fairy dust, pantera rules .u over critical bitch musos that over anilize music can eat shit.pantera was just good and thats all.go fuck urself u aids victim

  • @LOUISEANNMCSHERRY Fuck fuckity fuckin fuck fuck fucker bitch faggot dyke cunt rug muncher pickle puffer jewish nigger faggot. Did that make me look smart and important or make my opinion more important or valid?

  • @KayoteThunder Hahaha Your Gayer than Aids

  • @LOUISEANNMCSHERRY Aids is not gay. To be gay requires an attraction to the same gender. Aids has no gender so it is not gay. Technically speaking you are and I are both gayer than aids.

  • @MetalguitarlessonsUK you are a dumb ass with that pantera comment, music is music mother fucker and Dimebag Darrell was one of the most accomplished guitar players in the world, and beyond that he was a decent human being.

  • @bluesshredder911 Calm the fuck down. All he did was call him a redneck. You act like that is like calling him a fuckin disgusting human being. Redneck is not a bad term to call someone. It is just a type of person, usually it is used to describe a middle class or lower class white man from the south. Redneck can be used as an insult just like any other word if you use it that way but from what I see I don't think he meant it that way.

  • @bluesshredder911 Did I say music is not music? Or that Dimebag was a bad guitar player? Nope, reread my comment. I just pointed out that Pantera brought a strong white trash element to mainstream metal which many people have since tarnished the whole genre with...having confederate flag guitars and confederate flags plastered all over the stage sends off a strong message, especially when combined with a singer who in between songs was known to give talks about 'white pride' and other bullshit.

  • @MetalguitarlessonsUK I get what you mean but that is easily taken out of context. Pantera would often write on the flag heritage not hate meaning they use the flag to show their heritage and not to show support for all of the things the south stood for such as slavery and human trade. I haven't heard white pride speeches from pantera though. That would be stupid if he was preaching superiority when many of their fans are hispanic or black.

  • @KayoteThunder Just because they say the flag was for their heritage that does not in anyway make it moral for them to use it. The bottom line is that flags meaning still carries hate and because of people waving it around freely to show "pride" in their heritage, they are pounding those ideals, beliefs, and values into other people. I love panteras music and I love to get down and dirty with some fucking good ol southern metal, but its the truth. I also know Pantera loved all kinds of people.

  • @anoceanbetweenus89 Symbols can change meaning over time. The swastika was once called the manji and was known as a sign of peace and eternal life in the hindu faiths. Then Hitler came along and made it his emblem for the Nazi Regime. Before that it was also called the fireswirl or hammer twirl and stood for the god Thor. Throughout time symbols gain meaning and lose old ones. The georgia flag was once a symbol for confederacy but now it is used as a state flag. I can't fit all of this here.

  • @KayoteThunder meaning doesn't change, although a symbol can have multiple meanings but will always carry its history of meanings with it and you can't change history. I just think they could show their pride in their heritage through some other way that doesn't spread prejudices into others. There are many other outlets available for them to do so. Despite this, its obvious pantera is close to the most legendary and revolutionary of all metal bands ever.

  • @MetalguitarlessonsUK OK so what is your point then??? It's like you are trying to circumvent your main point...so is he a great musician then? a great guitarist?? if so say that and leave it at that, because that is whay Youtube is for...now if you have any videos of him showing this so called "White Pride" element you speak.. of then post the video, just because someone has a confederate flag does not make them a racist..you need to educate your self and smarten up a bit there

  • @MetalguitarlessonsUK OK so what is your point then??? • @bluesshredder911 seriously it stands for the culture of the south

  • @panteraslipknot200 you mad bro? Doesnt stop it being true.

  • @MetalguitarlessonsUK :iaintevenmad: Pantera is redneck, but not whitetrash.

  • My favorite Metal band of all-time, hands down. Stay Metal, brothers. \m/

  • its absolutely disgusting what cruelty humans are capable of over the most retarded things :/

honestly i was never really a guy that thought anything of homosexuals but after hearing this song and readin about what happened, im in full support of gay rifghts :)

  • 1st of March is Justin Bieber's birthday. This little roach has been infecting the whole world. Because of him, the world of rock is extincting.

So on his birthday, we all will go to his "Baby" official video and push the 'dislike' button so that the 'dislike' bar becomes 10 times bigger than the 'like' bar.

If you are a rock fan, join with me and thumbs up me, copy-paste this message to all rock videos. We have six months to unite and fight against that error

  • @Origin1993 Dude get the fuck out and take your Beiber shit with you

  • @Origin1993 dude there is no way rock or metal is extincting. You are the one who truly does damage to our genre. thats right "our' genre. not your, so stay the fuck out.

  • @ScRaPaZz I have a couple of arguments against your nerdrage. First of all, rock and metal are less popular today than 20/30 years ago. Fact. I think it's a bad thing Justine B. and her likes are more popular than rock and metal bands.

Secondly, I am not doing damage. Justine B. is. I'm just saying things you do not want to hear.

Thirdly, you have absolutely no right to tell me what is my music and what isn't.

tl;dr stfu and gtfo, fag, or I'll find out where you live and fucking skullfuck you

  • @Origin1993 you might be right that fucking shitty ass pop an hiphop are more popular than metal or rock or what ever you wish to name it, but as long as there are still some people out there who go to metal and rock concert, listen to the music and keep the fucking spirit alive it will NEVER be extinct.

    peace

  • @mysourromance Not really go over to Europe and metal still reigns over their so metal is a hell of a lot more popular than hip hop and rap still and always be because niggers dont exist in europe lol

  • @TriviumDFTS you don't have to tell me that, I'm Dutch myself...

  • @TriviumDFTS Britain still counts as part europe yes? Well we certainly have lost the metal...

  • @Origin1993 everytime you watch a justin bieber video you give him fame and money. Why don't you go to a Megadeth video or something like that?

  • @97Luis97 I have watched a JB video once. That doesn't give him fame because that 1 view is negated by the dislike I gave him, seeing as the vid has far more views than dislikes and 1 dislike has a larger negative impact on him than 1 view will have a positive impact.

It also doesn't give him money, because I didn't watch an ad before the video, so he made nothing off me.

I also do watch Megadeth vids far more frequently than JB.

All in all, I dont get what the fuck youre whing about.

  • this song is incrediblly powerful i have sevral friends who are gay and how much shit they went threw because of close minded bigotry was disgusting props to trivium for nailing this one perfectlly

  • man after figuring out what the song was talking about its a bad ass

poor kid tho, cant believe they did that to Shepard just being gay....

  • Meh... The lyrics are not that groundbreaking...

  • beautiful song!

  • RIP MATTHEW SHEPARD

  • The beginning kicks ass!

  • who ekse thought the chorus riff could have used a squealing at the end. just a thought.

  • faggot is a word that just makes you look fucking ignorant and matthew shepard wasnt hitch hiking he was in a bar and met the 2 men that would later kill him and they took advantage of him have respect and dont be ike those west borough douchbags RIP Matthew Shepard

  • Metal is the most pure expression of music and emotions every mettalfan knows. If you do not agree thanm go listen JB

  • this song is so fucking deep. I love it

  • @MonsterMetalMusic don't you watch southpark just cus you say faggot does not mean gay! Faggot!

  • ERIC NOTAR IS THE BEST GUITARIST!!!!!

  • EVERYONE LISTEN UP

    thumbs up!!

  • @roentjeu16 next year? but then Jb might have hit puberty

  • @roentjeu16 A little late dumb ass

  • @roentjeu16 comments a little late, but also why would you post that on this vid. I hate Justin Bieber just as much as any other who actually listens to real music, but calling him a little faggot on a song about someone being beat to death because they were gay isn't really cool. I'm not supporting gays or anything, just saying you should think before posting

  • @MonsterMetalMusic " I'm not supporting gays or anything, " ? = Fear of being judged.

  • @Ryld101 not at all, just me being truthful. I dont mean that i dont like gay people or anything, im just saying that i dont support gay pride parades and that sort of thing. Just cause someone is gay doesnt mean everyone else wants to hear about it.

  • @MonsterMetalMusic Very true, but its not like they are shoving it in your face, they are celebrating their newly acquired rights and freedom, its only been about 10 years now that gays have really been in the spotlight, before society would beat them to the sidelines, and refused to acknowledge the fact that they were human. Not something less, so I "support" them by attending the parades, its like a giant middle finger to the contempt of today's society, and the powers that control us.

  • @Ryld101 Valid point, and your right that most gay people don't shove it in your face but it really aggravates me when that one person goes out of their way to make sure that everyone knows they're gay. I guess that i can agree with what you said about gay pride parades too, they should be able to celebrate their freedom.

  • @MonsterMetalMusic Agreed on the really obnoxious gay's XD But this song is awesome, only metal can capture so many emotions, share so many stories, and unite so many people. METAL IS LIFE!

  • Great song.

  • just think, those two assholes that killed shepard are probably getting their asses raped everyday in the showers. thats a little ironic, and it proves karma is a bitch

  • @charger619c lol thats an awesome thought

  • best band ever (my opinion) (no hate comments please)

    <3

  • @mysourromance Dude, you suck for sharing your opinion, you aren't allowed to have an opinion

(I am kidding, incase trolls can't tell)

  • @worldof12 lol xD but seriously some people actually do think like that >< idiots...

  • @mysourromance It is sad. But atleast they have the smartness to click on this song! \m/

  • @worldof12 yeah that's true

  • Guna blast this song at school today Rip Matthew Shepard

  • awesome song, ive been addicted to this song for a while now

trivium is the best thing thats ever happend to my life !!!!

  • @mysourromance if you really like trivium, i suggest their album Ascendancy. It's my fav so far, and having listened to that first, I'm having a hard time with this album...sound completely different. They sound more MetallicAish in this album. Nothing bad, really, just kind of a strange kind of transition in a years time... B Ascendancy is serious kick ass!
