Most of the time, and intense twinkling effect (specially on the ones that seem to slowly move and revolve around their assigned "spot".
To be sure that what you are seeing it's true, I recommend to use a comfortable chair, specially one in which you can rest your head completely so you can be sure your head and eyes are completely still (even a good beach chair is usefull) and enjoy show!
It takes a long period of observation to distingish these "star or planet" like objects from real star or planets, but normally in a span of 10 to 30 minutes they will show one or more of these traits:
Side to side movements, slowly or quickly and suddenly.
Changes in apparent bright and/or color.
Flashes of intense bright light.
Quick changes of position.
If lucky and patient enough, the sensation of being interactive with you.
Before many people jumps in saying "it's just a lousy light in the sky" one should note that is completely alone in the sky, so no stars visible, or at least they aren't enough bright to be visible compared to the object being filmed, or better yet, stars are behind the cloud cover, so this object cannot be a star.
I see this kind of bright lights, that can be confused with a star or planet, any time I look to the sky.

Sudden disapearing without movement (cloaking?)
Sudden shoot off out of sight.
