Great video - what I like about our western empirical use of examples of actual fighting is our ability to create weapons & training apt to the context both of previous wars & readiness for future wars. I welcome the fact that modern ships can track thousands of targets but without a suitable number of ships or say a ship of great size (cruise-missile battleship to replace Iowa class as a armoured missile platform) a destroyer could be overwhelmed (mass air power (china) due to limited munitions
@infokemp That's the problem, the UK destroyers only have 48 air defence missile and the French/Italian destroyers even less, the US destroyers have 86 and crusiers over 100. But in terms of air defence, the type 45 is better, everything else the US destroyers are better, and even the China can't build as money destroyers as the US. I agree about having 40,000 tons missile battle ships, holding 500 plus missiles, a few of them would destroy most air force.
@mynoon1999 Thanks for sharing this view. The paradox of dominating coastlines is that you need small ships to get in close to the complicated shallow coastal areas but you will be vulnerable to being overwhelmed by shore defences even if you have destroyed enemy air-power (look at the Falklands RN un-armoured surface ships where being engaged by light land based weapons) - you need a platform that has many munitions & is armoured - until energy & nano-tech weapons dominate we still need scale.
@infokemp The Russian tryed something like this with their current carrier, having long range SAM missiles in their carrier, but it means the carrier isn't very good. That's one thing Europe needs long range SAM missiles, cheap ones that you fire off to anoy enemy aircraft, so they have to came closer, then they are hit by the Aster missiles. And what you said is the worry in any war with Iran. What do you think of Air Attack submarines, that go ahead of the carrier group to find enemy aircaft?
@mynoon1999 P1 reply The idea of the U-Boat / Sub having some air-defense is at least as old as the true submarine designs from late WW2, the problem could only be confronted by the primitive missile technology they had then by towing water-fall missiles in tubes behind the U-boat but this developed into the idea of internal tubes for V-2 missiles - although near the end of the war they did fire such missiles near the US coast - it was not an offensive op just for research.
@mynoon1999 P2 reply - the air defence side was under cut by the desire for offensive weapons both on land & at sea for the V2 project although a sea-waterfall & land-waterfall missile would of given the Germans a defensive shield. If we had a modern sub for air-defense it could either use physical floating sensors or some electronic system, like bouncing sonar off surface water for NATO satellites to send a energy pulse back which the sub could receive a picture or signal where to be & fight.
@mynoon1999 My comments or yours? - If you do put my comments on the forum please put my comments as anonymous (not the group obviously) or infokemp; Thanks.
@steamingpoopfart I'm actually just laughing at how shittingly stupidly funny you are! hahahaaa! seriously though..... the T45's weren't even around then you fucking foreignor!
@hotpocketpoison Who are you kidding, the Burg is still better then the Type 45. The modernization of the US navy with new Carriers, Zunwalt, Libery ... are far beyond anything anyone has.
@hotpocketpoison Ha you bellend it hasn't even been built yet! it also focus's on land attack, the Type 45 concentrates on ebign the ebst anti air ship on the planet, it could destroy all the aircraft of south america all by itself... and I'd imagine when all 6 are built it'd give the USAF a challenge too... but let's not go there ;) we're allies so lets just concentrate on giving those rag heads a good bashing together :P
@XxGREATxBRITAINxX the type 45 destroyer only has 48 missile cells, whereas the Arleigh Burke class has 96. this means the type 45 would be HALF as effective against land, sea, and air targets. seriously...48 cells is pathetic. not to mention 61 AB class destroyers are in active service, and only 3 45s are in active service...so which one is better again???
@hotpocketpoison lol I love how opptomistic you are you dim bastard... never heard of something called 'reloading' it's what people who don't use spears anymore use ;)
@XxGREATxBRITAINxX and what are you gaining from that statement? if the Type 45 is able to reload than so is the AB class. which means firing the same volume of munitions as the AB will take twice as long with the Type 45. im sorry, but this does NOT seem like "best" level quality to me XD
@hotpocketpoison Aren't the British and American's meant to be allies? The AB class was first commissioned in 91 of course the type 45 will be an improvement on it in some ways, just as the new Zumwalt class will be. At the end of the day Britain is tiny compared America they always will have a smaller navy, point is when Britain and America come together no country on earth can stand up to them so who cares which one has the most destroyers, they learn from each other they adapt they overcome.
@DeadMemories03 the whole point it, these brits come onto videos about american equipment and claim theres is "better" when they are CLEARLY wrong, i just like to PROVE to them they are wrong.
@hotpocketpoison not sayin some british people aren't arrogant but so are just as many americans, in some ways the Type 45 is better than the Arleigh Burke and in other ways as you said munitions for example the Arleigh Burke is better. Anyway some competition is good every so often means when we come together to kick the shit out of someone else we can prove to each other just how good we are. Respect from us 'Brits' by the way =)
@DeadMemories03 and i never said some americans arnt arrogant, but i will not stand idly by while lies are being spread, i will retaliate with facts if need be. the Type 45 has a farther maximum range before refueling than the AB class but that is its only real advantage.
@hotpocketpoison Arleigh Burke without a doubt has greater ground attack capabilities through its 96 missile cells a large amount of which contain the BGM-109 tomahawk and RGM-84 Harpoon. The type 45 can carry both of the above but currently doesn't instead it is deployed as a dedicated anti-aircraft vessel, it also has slightly superior air surveillance radar and was designed with stealth aspects giving it a reduced cross section. These are two very different ships in two very different roles.
@DeadMemories03 it does have slightly better radar range but not enough to really count as a true advantage. the AB class is capable of carrying 4 RIM-162s per cell(384 in total AA mode), meaning it has far better anti air capabilities as well as anti ground capabilities. it could carry the same number of missiles as the Type 45 class and still have 46 cells left over for up to 46 BGM-109s(and soon the hypersonic ArcLight cruise missile with ranges exceeding 2300miles). they are both good ships.
@hotpocketpoison They are indeed both very good ships personally I still believe that with its advanced radar capabilities it is the superior AA ship but I'm British, proud and very bias =) I will say though if you american's do go ahead and build the Zumwalt class and incorporate the rail gun as planned that will be a ship I will bow down to 440 miles range rail gun shooting a Mach 8 solid boar projectile + ballistic missiles and a stealth based design. Sounds pretty badass to me.
@DeadMemories03 we are indeed going through with it. 3 are being built as we speak. if everything goes as planned it will be VERY badass! accompany that with the Gerald R Ford class supercarrier and the F-35C and the naval power of the US and NATO will be undoubtably superior to all other countries combined.
@hotpocketpoison aye, do you know what the Gerald R Ford class carriers main improvements are over they current Nimitz class? on the outside they both look very similar in layout compared to the difference between our old Invincible class and the new Queen Elizabeth class carriers which is well quite obvious considering they are 3 times bigger for a start.
@DeadMemories03 Advanced arresting gear, automation (reducing the crew's size), Evolved Sea Sparrow missile, AN/SPY-3 dual band radar, electromagnetic aircraft launching system, A1B nuclear reactor, ability to hold 90 aircraft (F-35C, F/A-18 E/F and other support aircraft like the Growler and UAV's)
@DeadMemories03 basically what NatedogJr said. much more automation(reducing the crew size by over 1000), better engines, better defensive armaments, more effective arresting and launching gear, FAR better radar and a much stealthier design than the Nimitz class carriers.

@hotpocketpoison whats your point dude? You think in a hypothetical 1v1 destroyer vs destroyer battle the British ship would win? Let me let you in a little secret, the United States Navy is the most powerful Navy the world has ever seen and never would that single destroyer even close to the combined power of a US Battle Group
@ASH6977 You have bailed us out a few times n' bein british I do thank you yanks for that but you gotta give it to us we did hold back germany, france and itally for 2 whole years alone, and america did destroy our aviation industry refusing us an IMF lone unless we scrapped plans for the TSR2 because nato were going to buy it over the f-111. Either way we still love you americans here in the UK n' your food is so much nicer than ours lol
@DeadMemories03 uhhh having your cities bombed to the ground is not what I consider 'holding them off" but I see your point lol, if I had to eat eel pie all day I would not have much energy to fight off the luftwaffe
@ASH6977 Firstly, total respect for the American Armed Forces, without whom, we would be living in a very, very different world today. I do take issue with the very common phrase 'we saved your arses in WW1 and WW2'. You didn't, you helped save France, Belgium and Hollands arses in WW1 and WW2. An invasion of mainland Europe was impossible without the Americans, the Brits had already beaten Germany twice before American involvement and the Russians had already pegged them back as well.
@ASH6977 I am unable to agree with the fact that 'If it wasn't for us, you'd all be speaking German now', but I will agree that we might have been speaking Russian. By the way, if it wasn't for the Brits, you'd all be speaking French. Like I say, complete and utter respect for the American Armed Forces, past and present.
@hotpocketpoison Um, you can have as many cells as you want, if 1 of the type 45 cells are more effective then 2-3 of the other destroyers cells then.............
@oiReWiin what the fuck??? i take it english is not your first language because that statement was borderline illegible. the VLCs are the same in size on both ships, the AB class just has TWICE as many.
@hotpocketpoison Ok lol lets make this easier for you........... Quality not quantity get it now dick head???? there's a lot of things out there that hold twice as much but still doesn't do any better and who the fuck mentioned about size?????
@oiReWiin first of all, they both fire the same types of weapons, so there is absolutely NO quality difference. secondly YOU were the one who said something about 1 cell being better than 2-3 other cells...which is, as i said, BARELY legible, so if i misread your illegible comment dont try to make a point out of it, its only hurting YOU!
@oiReWiin work on my grammar??? what the hell was spelt wrong??? it was because of YOUR poor english that i read the comment wrong in the first place. its one thing if you can understand the comment(if you correct it at that point, you are a grammar Nazi)but if it is so poorly worded that it is illegible then the reader can NOT be held responsible. so IF the Type 45 fired better weapons it could possibly compete, but since it doesnt then the two are not comparable, the AB is far more effective.
@hotpocketpoison "Work on my grammar??/ what the hell was spelt wrong"???. I said grammar not spelling dick head, you can try blaming everyone else as much as you like, the fact is you're just an idiot and if you're going to moan about English, i doubt you're from U.K so stop speaking the language.
the navy's gone to hell. I want the good old days back with Navies fighting at sea and battleships firing huge cannons that make a lot of noise and look really cool. where have those days gone?
Please don't try to dismiss diesel submarines, the US navy still has huge troubles finding a modern diesel electric AIP sub like the Swedish Gotland, or similar subs like the german type 214, among others..
@martinborgen And in 2006 during that incident, the US was not using P-3's and certainly didn't have the equipment the P-8 will have. And the Virginia class has towed low and high frequency sonar as well. The fleet also didn't have the new LCS with it's newer AN/SQR-20 sonar.
Modern sonobuoys that the US is receiving can even detect families of whales. Not that ASW is easy, but submarines are growing more and more disadvantaged.
@franknbeans4761 It's not like the subs have evolved any during these years either? We're talking littoral waters here, and that's where the sonars have an extremly tough time finding anything - most of these sonars you mention are designed for open waters, and way too powerful to use in shallow waters, where these types of submarines can hide, and where the US navy identified the problem.
@franknbeans4761 I think we can agree on that conclusion. As someone said "A good goalkeeper needs to luck too".
Paper performance in all honour, but when it comes down to it, the acutal tool is a minor part of the equation. Circumstances and different situations will destroy any plan - no plan survives contact with reality.
@franknbeans4761 Also, Diesel-Electric subs are many times more quiet than conventional subs, in addition to being much smaller. When the HMS Gotland's noise level was to be measured at a British measurement station, they complained that the sub failed to pass that day - only after several tries did they manage to locate it. Hence it's really hard to determine if that possible threat is a sub or not. That said, I would be suprised if the US navy hasn't improved. :)
I love the US Navy destroyers, but the "back bone"? Please. Carriers are the modern back bone of the navy. Destroyers play a great role in being the work horse of the navy, but they are far from the key player. If they're not hunting pirates/subs they're assigned to protect carriers. You'll never find a carrier being tasked to protect a destroyer.
Oh yeah I would LOVE to see a destroyer out-run a Nimitz-class carrier in both smooth and especially rough seas.
China will be the new kids on the block soon, cant believe in a few years time they will be the biggest super power, its always on the news and papers their stealth bomber looks awesome
@shotbuck100 comes from the country that is afraid of us being in the South China Sea , yeah America won't let that happen and as for the allies in the pacific. People underestimate the power of the us navy , and other allied countries so much when they don't know jack. "I fear all we have done is to awaken a sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve."-Yamamoto- AMERICA " the sleeping giant" has been watching China , and so has the rest of the world ,don't forget we made you.
@ayeayeayeaye12 more i think about what you say is true., if the USA could or would, have a no holds barred conflict, because the USA have only been slapping hands these last few decades because of the politics, if they got down and dirty big time with the full fire power (that they have not let go yet), like my friend said places like Iran would be a car lot inside 30 minutes tops even with out the US dropping the big one on them, happy 2010
@ayeayeayeaye12 Yea you certainly did make Communist China. When Truman didn't let MacArthur drop 50 nukes on China after they intervened in the Korean War. Now we all have to live with their threat and cyber theft of superior Western military and commercial designs.
@ayeayeayeaye12 US may have made China, but without China, US would collapse. Where do you get all your plastic products, industrial parts, metals and other specialized hardware from? China. Cut china, your country will starve.
@Radiohead420DJ the US would have absolutely NO problem producing its own goods, its just cheaper for big businesses to outsource jobs to countries like china and india. however over 75% of ALL chinese exports go to the US, if we cut off trade...china would be fucked.
@hotpocketpoison Lol, you are completely disconnected from reality. You have no idea what youre talking about dude. What are you, a truck mechanic or something? Get an education...you will soon find out that your country is completely dependent on foreign oil, metals, plastics, other goods used for production. Take a walk outside of the USA for once, you have no idea whats happening in the world.
@Radiohead420DJ you seriously think the US can not produce its own goods??? and do you really think we have low supply of minerals and natural resources(apart from oil,we are in limited supply of that)??? YOU sir are the one who must rely on stations like RT to get your information, because you obviously have NO idea what the US is capable of,we are the ones who actually build most cars you see(designed in foreign countries, most built in the US). i think you need to take a walk INSIDE the US.
@hotpocketpoison Dude.. its useless speaking to an american. Its like playing chess against a pigeon. no matter how good you are, the pigeon is just going to knock down the pieces, walk in circles and shit on the board, then it will fly away. thats exactly what youre doing. dont bother replying, i wont read it. peace (i hope you consider getting an education for your own sake).
@Radiohead420DJ LOL, your original! what website did you get that from? defensive comebacks . com??? TROLOLOLOLOL! you have yet to put ONE fact foreword, just pure, and infinitely ridiculous IGNORANCE XD have you ever even been to the US? no right? thought so, if you have you would realize we are just like everyone else, and the majority of the ignorance you will find in this world come from jealous foreigners like YOU! not from the US.
@hotpocketpoison Dude, Im born in Canada. Ive been to the US a dozen times. Ive been to New York, Florida (fort lauderdale, keys, pompano), ive been to maine, michigan, washington.... Ive seen a lot in the US. Just look at yourself dude, youre full of shit. What are you gonna say now bitch? I hope your arteries are clogged up and you will die of a heart attack soon. Dumb fuck. Take a trip outside of the US for fuck sakes...
@Radiohead420DJ HA!!! now i will call BULLSHIT! if you have ever been to the states you would NOT have so much hate towards it, i have relatives who have visited from ireland, and italy, and they have ONLY good things to say about this country, yes many people are fat(however I am closer to being underweight than overweight...so no artery clogging with this one CUNT)but how can you generalize the whole country for that? almost the same percentage of people per capita in the UK are overweight, -
@mitchell600 One, the Cole was refueling when a small craft came up next to it slowly and suddenly detonated. Sailors can't just go shooting every ship that gets near, there are such things as ROE. Two, would you like to specify just how the Aegis class "sucks"? Three, the Arleigh Burke class, might not be stealth, but it has a R-RCS. There is also the LCS and Zumwalt class. Also stealth ship are size constrained and can still be detected by infrared and by their wake and spray.
@mitchell600 Also, a lot of ship in service with the world's military today are designed in the 1900's. The Arleigh Burke class is still relatively new, compared to what other countries have. There are upgrades available, you can't go designing and building new ships every 5 years. One ship plus the maintenance and upgrade would cost hundreds of millions of dollars.
@mitchell600 You are a damn fool. Sure Europe is upgrading, but from all from much older units. Ever heard of the Zumwalt class and LCS? America is upgrading as well. Just from hearing you talk about "Europa vs America", I can tell you have no true military background. Otherwise, you're just a fanboy who joined up for fun because he couldn't find any suitable jobs. Only idiots like you don't seem to realize that America and Europe are allies, go play COD in you mother's basement, you fool.
@Anonymous52550 Im only here to teach American fools a lesson in how not good they are. Owh look at us, we are the best. LCS? Zumwalt? Yeah 3 zumwalt class destroyers really make up for it right? And those LCS? Its not even that stealthy, and what does it carry? Barely anything. And the cost of it? What was it? 6.5 billion per zumwalt class unit and those LCS cost the price of a destroyer. Foolish people
@mitchell600 APAR? So you're either in the Netherlands or the German navy, neither of which are very powerful. I'm not saying it to be mean, its just a fact. You can talk down about America's navy all you want, but it is undeniably the most powerful navy in the world today. You say AEGIS sucks, but when was the last time a US navy ship was hit by a missile? Everyone says the US military is over-rated, yet nobody has the balls to do anything about it.
@KTM990WFO APAR and SMART-L are worldwide sold. The americans got hit by an exocet. And skiffs.
You guys are so pathetic. Put europe vs america and you lose. Unless you use nuclear weapons.
The dutch used 1 diesel sub to sink half a carrier group of the usa in 1998 and got away unseen. They even showed the periscope a few metefs off the carrier group. It was an exercise. The English and French did the same. All subs where from 1995 or earlier. Even norway managed to do it with superold subs.
@mitchell600 Please, don't try to bring up the talk about diesel submarines. Did you know that the P-8 Poseidon has a hydrocarbon sensor that detects diesel fumes from submarines? And with major increases in sonobuoys, submarines are more vulnerable than ever. Especially when considering the P-8 carries 120 sonobuoys.
@franknbeans4761 LCS aint that good. Their weapon layout is low and high maintance costs. Only 32 of them is not enough for us navy. And 13 more Arleighs? Those designs are from 1980... Old shit. And the cruiser replacement has been canceles. Nice try convincing me but it doesnt work.
@mitchell600 The Arleighs are much more capable than most modern destroyers coming out. So no, it is not, "old shit."
Like I said, the LCS can be outfitted with many diverse weapons. So saying it isn't good enough when at least 32 are planned with quite possibly 55 being built in all isn't a good excuse.
@mitchell600 Just because America has ships from the 80's,doesn't mean they're no longer effective, ever heard of the phrase "ahead of its time"? Beside, without carriers to project power,a navy is limited to defensive roles and the range of its on-board missiles.
Don't even go talking about the technology aboard,we share a lot of that tech, but I wouldn't expect you to understand. You've never even been in the innards of the ship, let alone the CIC. Just another ignorant fool blathering on Youtube.
@mitchell600 Arleigh Burke destroyers are on their 2nd flight type, with a 3rd planned. They have been continously upgraded. They might look the same to your unknowlegeable brain, but they are completely more capable than the De Zeven Provinciën class frigates. Additionally, your country only has 4... lmao... 4..
@mitchell600 you are so , mistaken my friend the British ,and French are our closest allies , and in the end Europe known's or has to realize that they depend on us like they have in the past two World Wars and in the upcoming problems that may arise,
@mitchell600 I'm guessing some people don't realize the damage the USS Cole took when the suicide bombers decided to attack it while Cole was refueling. The hole that was created from the blast was larger than the hole that sunk the Titanic. And the tiny destroyer managed to stay afloat and is still active to this very day.
Aegis sucks? Do you even know the difference between a 2D and 3D radar?
@KTM990WFO duh if ships are refueling every door and hatch will be closed from below and 1 deck above waterline. If this wasnt done it would have sunk without hasitation. The british rammed their destroyer on a rock. The whole hull had to be strengtened with wood and still sailed home with water in her hull everywhere. That is a prestation! And in areas like those are always people on the helm and look out. Especiallh with refueling. Why didnt they grab a gun and fire?
@mitchell600 what noob navy do you refer to and judging by the terminology you use to refer to a navy I think we can all safely assume you are 15 years old on your family computer who plays COD for about 15 hours a week then comes on youtube to troll after going to pornhub. Thanks again for your expert assessment
@nbhsa567 only when the ship is docked with the whole grew ashore, believe me under normal circumstances try it and youll get to see how high a motorboat can fly
The CG-47 was originally supposed to be a Destroyer. In fact, the CG-47 is based on a DD-963 hull. Congress said "No way! we are not going to pay this much for a Destroyer!" The Navy changed its classification to Cruiser and Congress responded "Wow! Cheap Cruiser! We'll take it!" Congress then responded "You already have your Cruisers so you won't bee needing these new nuclear powered Agis Cruisers anymore!" And the modified Virginias were cancelled.
@jerpao13 I think that the Flight I and Flight II has Harpoon anti-ahip missiles and the CIWS. The Flight IIA ships does anti-piracy missions (Somali Pirates).
The USS Oscar Austin and USS Rosevelt has CIWS's, and they are Flight IIA's. The IIA are used in anti-piracy missions. It also has a new gun replacing the 5 in/54 caliber: the 5 in/62 caliber.
@jerpao13 Harpoons can be fired through the VLS, thou you usually want 4-8 in there own stack up launchers above the hanger deck, but that varies from ship to ship, not which flight. same goes with CIWS. each ship has its own allotment of $ for the year, the ship has to juggle if they want new stuff, or fix the broken stuff. last ship i was on, opted for the new remote controlled 25mm turrets instead of upgrading from evaporated water to reverse osmosis.
@ne1469a3 the Brits in 39 had 36 cruisers, biggest navy in the world then. The Burke DD's are all larger than those cruisers at 10,000 tons[big as a Cumberland CA]USN very big
In a group of warships 1 destroyer (like the ones that are in WW2 but are modern and brisling with guns) would be enough to help protect the battlegroup
Difference between propaganda and this documentary. Propaganda tells how good we are and how bad the enemy is. This documentary tells how good US navy is but says nothing about enemies.
Interesting. After all the big talk about how powerful and invulnerable the modern destroyer is, I recall that the USS Cole was nearly sunk by a couple of rag heads in a motor boat. Despite all the technology, it really comes down to the competency of the human beings on the boat.
@swizzletik Is that all you're going to say a couple rag heads in a motor boat nearly sunk it? As if they were in some sort of battle?
how bout the USS Cole was *in harbor and refueling* and then ragheads on a motor boat suddenly crash into it with explosive on board in suicide attack.
Yes , destroyers are vulnerable to explosive speedboats while tied down to a dock.
@OlderG0ds The American warship was not keeping a proper deck watch. However, nobody deserves that sort of end. I remember reading about the Cole when I was at sea.
A couple of guards on deck with some firepower would've sorted out the insurgents I bet. The problem is a lack of protection. Believe it or not, I've heard that american aircraft carriers are sometimes guarded by as little as two 50. cals while docked!
Heard of the protector USV? it's one possible method of protecting docked ships, there was a future weapons episode on it. I fail to see how it would combat enemy frogmen though...
@Ag3nt0fCha0s Geneva convention "do not fire unless fired upon." Marcus Lutterul made an excelent, sarcastic point. " We, the soldier, do not know better than who is an enemy right? That villager is just taking his dynamite out for a walk!" Those gaurds would have been ripped apart by there own media.
The media is bulshit. I've read the Wall Street Journey claiming that UAVs are excellent, the truth is that with a 50% crash rate, they're fucking awful.
As for shooting civilians when the enemy often disguises themselves as civilians, it depends on the individual circumstances of the incident, and frankly, it's not easy to judge, which is one reason innocent civilians sometimes get fired on.
@OlderG0ds the USS cole actually proved that such a massive explosion did not sink it.the weapons sensors were probably damaged, but the ship was still seaworthy after the attack.
@OlderG0ds Abour DDG Cole, "As if they were in some sort of battle?? "
As if preparedness to defend wouldn't matter. So, Pearl Harbor was sort of unfair and does not count, because this wasn't a battle and a replay should be fought?
Let's continue this line of thinking, destroying an aircraft on the carrier before takeoff is not exposing its weakness?
it is actualy because if u go fast enough once u are close to the destroyer the guns on it cannot hit u (they would hit the deck) and the motor boat would in fact be effective :P
@swizzletik USS Cole was not nearly sunk, just tore a big gash into the ship the U.S navy didn't want to risk it sailing so they brought it back with a carry ship.
@swizzletik First of all IDIOT I HELPED BUILD THESE MARVELOUS WARSHIPS!! Secondly I AM MUSLIM!! SO WATCH YOUR MOUTH!! The problem is the outter hull is only about 1 1/2 inch thick.it does not take much C4 to breach its hull. it is designed to be formiddible while in battle with other warships because it does not have to be in sight of the enemy to destroy them. While in its CIC ( Combat Information Center) I watched a man walking across a bridge in New York. We were in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
@swizzletik Tell them to try that again. As a matter of facts, tell them to try it right now with any DDG underway and let's see if you can find the rags afterwards..
@swizzletik You are a complete and total idiot. And this is one of the most idiotic, stupid and asinine comments I have read on YouTube, and givin the number of idiots who dwell here, that is an amazing achievment on your part. I wish you ill will and harm on behalf of the sailors that lost thier life. Burn in hell cocksucker.
@swizzletik "After all the big talk about how powerful and invulnerable the modern destroyer is..." you can not specify where you heard/read the details of "invulnerability"-you can't.
The US Navy, and the entire US Military, is a bad ass military power. That does not mean being impervious to vulnerability.
Get a grip and tone down on your knucklehead literal paradgm and dial up some listening powers that translate into capable, intelligent synthesis.
@swizzletik what are you talking about it was refueling asshole at sea do you think that would happen and that will never happen again now order are shoot to kill every thing not our comming with in a range
The 5 inch gun is only for targets nor threatening enough for a missile. The DDG51 class has the capablity to mount numerous smaller anti-surface weapons (like 2 of the Navy version of the 20mm bushmaster, and multiple M2 50cal heavy machine guns) for use against smaller targets. In the age of guided anti-ship missles (harpoons and tomahawks) war ships do not trade shots back and forth.

I second on you reply, OlderG0ds. As one who has served in the military, it was my family's own heritage that made me decide to continue the duty. Not some commercial or documentary. So, if I relied on propaganda, it came from family instead of the media.
You would think that for a puff/propaganda piece, the damn producers would've find a narrator that could pronounce the word "Arleigh" correctly. Dang it, our propagandists sucks.
propaganda? do you even know what that word means? obviously not. This is just an educational show talking about a type of ship. If you think THIS is propaganda you need to watch russiatoday or some north korean news, cause this ain't got nothing on those.
??? meet up and fight? lol so now im dealing with mr internet gantster over here..LOLOL
i don't have to read all of the other comments. You said it pretty clear in that one comment that this is propaganda. Propaganda is made by the GOVERMENT(or at least funded by it) and this program was simply an information platform for our navy.
Like i said, this "propaganda" isn't nearly as propaganderish(i know its not a word) than other countries like russia, or north korea
@andrewm153351@andrewm153351 I'm not interested in "gangster", what I am is an honorably discharged US vet who was watching a youtube video about a destroyer, a destroyer which I'm been aboard in port while on one of my multiple West Pac deployment, and I commented in response to another comment. You need to learn how to fucking read you fucking dipshit.

Great video - what I like about our western empirical use of examples of actual fighting is our ability to create weapons & training apt to the context both of previous wars & readiness for future wars. I welcome the fact that modern ships can track thousands of targets but without a suitable number of ships or say a ship of great size (cruise-missile battleship to replace Iowa class as a armoured missile platform) a destroyer could be overwhelmed (mass air power (china) due to limited munitions
infokemp 2 days ago
@infokemp That's the problem, the UK destroyers only have 48 air defence missile and the French/Italian destroyers even less, the US destroyers have 86 and crusiers over 100. But in terms of air defence, the type 45 is better, everything else the US destroyers are better, and even the China can't build as money destroyers as the US. I agree about having 40,000 tons missile battle ships, holding 500 plus missiles, a few of them would destroy most air force.
mynoon1999 2 days ago
@mynoon1999 Thanks for sharing this view. The paradox of dominating coastlines is that you need small ships to get in close to the complicated shallow coastal areas but you will be vulnerable to being overwhelmed by shore defences even if you have destroyed enemy air-power (look at the Falklands RN un-armoured surface ships where being engaged by light land based weapons) - you need a platform that has many munitions & is armoured - until energy & nano-tech weapons dominate we still need scale.
infokemp 2 days ago
@infokemp The Russian tryed something like this with their current carrier, having long range SAM missiles in their carrier, but it means the carrier isn't very good. That's one thing Europe needs long range SAM missiles, cheap ones that you fire off to anoy enemy aircraft, so they have to came closer, then they are hit by the Aster missiles. And what you said is the worry in any war with Iran. What do you think of Air Attack submarines, that go ahead of the carrier group to find enemy aircaft?
mynoon1999 2 days ago
@mynoon1999 P1 reply The idea of the U-Boat / Sub having some air-defense is at least as old as the true submarine designs from late WW2, the problem could only be confronted by the primitive missile technology they had then by towing water-fall missiles in tubes behind the U-boat but this developed into the idea of internal tubes for V-2 missiles - although near the end of the war they did fire such missiles near the US coast - it was not an offensive op just for research.
infokemp 1 day ago
@mynoon1999 P2 reply - the air defence side was under cut by the desire for offensive weapons both on land & at sea for the V2 project although a sea-waterfall & land-waterfall missile would of given the Germans a defensive shield. If we had a modern sub for air-defense it could either use physical floating sensors or some electronic system, like bouncing sonar off surface water for NATO satellites to send a energy pulse back which the sub could receive a picture or signal where to be & fight.

@hotpocketpoison Who are you kidding, the Burg is still better then the Type 45. The modernization of the US navy with new Carriers, Zunwalt, Libery ... are far beyond anything anyone has.
player276 3 weeks ago
@hotpocketpoison Ha you bellend it hasn't even been built yet! it also focus's on land attack, the Type 45 concentrates on ebign the ebst anti air ship on the planet, it could destroy all the aircraft of south america all by itself... and I'd imagine when all 6 are built it'd give the USAF a challenge too... but let's not go there ;) we're allies so lets just concentrate on giving those rag heads a good bashing together :P
XxGREATxBRITAINxX 2 weeks ago
@XxGREATxBRITAINxX the type 45 destroyer only has 48 missile cells, whereas the Arleigh Burke class has 96. this means the type 45 would be HALF as effective against land, sea, and air targets. seriously...48 cells is pathetic. not to mention 61 AB class destroyers are in active service, and only 3 45s are in active service...so which one is better again???
hotpocketpoison 2 weeks ago 2
@hotpocketpoison lol I love how opptomistic you are you dim bastard... never heard of something called 'reloading' it's what people who don't use spears anymore use ;)
XxGREATxBRITAINxX 2 weeks ago
@XxGREATxBRITAINxX and what are you gaining from that statement? if the Type 45 is able to reload than so is the AB class. which means firing the same volume of munitions as the AB will take twice as long with the Type 45. im sorry, but this does NOT seem like "best" level quality to me XD
hotpocketpoison 2 weeks ago
@hotpocketpoison Aren't the British and American's meant to be allies? The AB class was first commissioned in 91 of course the type 45 will be an improvement on it in some ways, just as the new Zumwalt class will be. At the end of the day Britain is tiny compared America they always will have a smaller navy, point is when Britain and America come together no country on earth can stand up to them so who cares which one has the most destroyers, they learn from each other they adapt they overcome.
DeadMemories03 2 weeks ago
@DeadMemories03 the whole point it, these brits come onto videos about american equipment and claim theres is "better" when they are CLEARLY wrong, i just like to PROVE to them they are wrong.
hotpocketpoison 2 weeks ago
@hotpocketpoison not sayin some british people aren't arrogant but so are just as many americans, in some ways the Type 45 is better than the Arleigh Burke and in other ways as you said munitions for example the Arleigh Burke is better. Anyway some competition is good every so often means when we come together to kick the shit out of someone else we can prove to each other just how good we are. Respect from us 'Brits' by the way =)
DeadMemories03 2 weeks ago
@DeadMemories03 and i never said some americans arnt arrogant, but i will not stand idly by while lies are being spread, i will retaliate with facts if need be. the Type 45 has a farther maximum range before refueling than the AB class but that is its only real advantage.
hotpocketpoison 2 weeks ago
@hotpocketpoison Arleigh Burke without a doubt has greater ground attack capabilities through its 96 missile cells a large amount of which contain the BGM-109 tomahawk and RGM-84 Harpoon. The type 45 can carry both of the above but currently doesn't instead it is deployed as a dedicated anti-aircraft vessel, it also has slightly superior air surveillance radar and was designed with stealth aspects giving it a reduced cross section. These are two very different ships in two very different roles.
DeadMemories03 2 weeks ago
@DeadMemories03 it does have slightly better radar range but not enough to really count as a true advantage. the AB class is capable of carrying 4 RIM-162s per cell(384 in total AA mode), meaning it has far better anti air capabilities as well as anti ground capabilities. it could carry the same number of missiles as the Type 45 class and still have 46 cells left over for up to 46 BGM-109s(and soon the hypersonic ArcLight cruise missile with ranges exceeding 2300miles). they are both good ships.
hotpocketpoison 2 weeks ago
@hotpocketpoison They are indeed both very good ships personally I still believe that with its advanced radar capabilities it is the superior AA ship but I'm British, proud and very bias =) I will say though if you american's do go ahead and build the Zumwalt class and incorporate the rail gun as planned that will be a ship I will bow down to 440 miles range rail gun shooting a Mach 8 solid boar projectile + ballistic missiles and a stealth based design. Sounds pretty badass to me.
DeadMemories03 2 weeks ago
@DeadMemories03 we are indeed going through with it. 3 are being built as we speak. if everything goes as planned it will be VERY badass! accompany that with the Gerald R Ford class supercarrier and the F-35C and the naval power of the US and NATO will be undoubtably superior to all other countries combined.
hotpocketpoison 2 weeks ago
@hotpocketpoison aye, do you know what the Gerald R Ford class carriers main improvements are over they current Nimitz class? on the outside they both look very similar in layout compared to the difference between our old Invincible class and the new Queen Elizabeth class carriers which is well quite obvious considering they are 3 times bigger for a start.
DeadMemories03 2 weeks ago
@DeadMemories03 Advanced arresting gear, automation (reducing the crew's size), Evolved Sea Sparrow missile, AN/SPY-3 dual band radar, electromagnetic aircraft launching system, A1B nuclear reactor, ability to hold 90 aircraft (F-35C, F/A-18 E/F and other support aircraft like the Growler and UAV's)
NatedogJr 6 days ago
@DeadMemories03 basically what NatedogJr said. much more automation(reducing the crew size by over 1000), better engines, better defensive armaments, more effective arresting and launching gear, FAR better radar and a much stealthier design than the Nimitz class carriers.

@ASH6977 I am unable to agree with the fact that 'If it wasn't for us, you'd all be speaking German now', but I will agree that we might have been speaking Russian. oiReWiin 1 day ago

But I wouldn't expect an uneducated moron like yourself to admit they suck at reading.
oiReWiin 1 day ago
@oiReWiin work on my grammar??? what the hell was spelt wrong??? it was because of YOUR poor english that i read the comment wrong in the first place. its one thing if you can understand the comment(if you correct it at that point, you are a grammar Nazi)but if it is so poorly worded that it is illegible then the reader can NOT be held responsible. so IF the Type 45 fired better weapons it could possibly compete, but since it doesnt then the two are not comparable, the AB is far more effective.
hotpocketpoison 1 day ago
@hotpocketpoison "Work on my grammar??/ what the hell was spelt wrong"???. I said grammar not spelling dick head, you can try blaming everyone else as much as you like, the fact is you're just an idiot and if you're going to moan about English, i doubt you're from U.K so stop speaking the language.

Please don't try to dismiss diesel submarines, the US navy still has huge troubles finding a modern diesel electric AIP sub like the Swedish Gotland, or similar subs like the german type 214, among others..
martinborgen 3 weeks ago
@martinborgen And in 2006 during that incident, the US was not using P-3's and certainly didn't have the equipment the P-8 will have. And the Virginia class has towed low and high frequency sonar as well. The fleet also didn't have the new LCS with it's newer AN/SQR-20 sonar.
Modern sonobuoys that the US is receiving can even detect families of whales. Not that ASW is easy, but submarines are growing more and more disadvantaged.
franknbeans4761 3 weeks ago
@franknbeans4761 It's not like the subs have evolved any during these years either? We're talking littoral waters here, and that's where the sonars have an extremly tough time finding anything - most of these sonars you mention are designed for open waters, and way too powerful to use in shallow waters, where these types of submarines can hide, and where the US navy identified the problem.
martinborgen 3 weeks ago
@martinborgen AN/SQR-20 sonar is designed to perform in littoral waters. Hence it's use on Littoral Combat Ships.
But either way, the most US naval engagements would occur in open waters due to the range of naval aircraft and standoff cruise missiles.
However, diesel-electric subs, especially AIP ones, are very hard to track and locate no matter what.
franknbeans4761 3 weeks ago
@franknbeans4761 I think we can agree on that conclusion. As someone said "A good goalkeeper needs to luck too".
Paper performance in all honour, but when it comes down to it, the acutal tool is a minor part of the equation. Circumstances and different situations will destroy any plan - no plan survives contact with reality.
martinborgen 3 weeks ago
@martinborgen Well put and well said. I agree 100%.
franknbeans4761 3 weeks ago

USS Cole, pwned by a noob navy.
Aegis sucks
The ship barely has stealth.
And they are designed in 1980's.
mitchell600 2 months ago
@mitchell600 One, the Cole was refueling when a small craft came up next to it slowly and suddenly detonated. Sailors can't just go shooting every ship that gets near, there are such things as ROE. Two, would you like to specify just how the Aegis class "sucks"? Three, the Arleigh Burke class, might not be stealth, but it has a R-RCS. There is also the LCS and Zumwalt class. Also stealth ship are size constrained and can still be detected by infrared and by their wake and spray.
Anonymous52550 2 months ago
@mitchell600 Also, a lot of ship in service with the world's military today are designed in the 1900's. The Arleigh Burke class is still relatively new, compared to what other countries have. There are upgrades available, you can't go designing and building new ships every 5 years. One ship plus the maintenance and upgrade would cost hundreds of millions of dollars.
Anonymous52550 2 months ago
@Anonymous52550
Whole europe has newer units. And multiple per country. Even russia has new ones.
America has fallen behind.
1970s cruisers. 80s frigates and destroyers.
My work is dutch navy. We got frigates from 1990s and 2000+ and building new ones now.
Rest of europe same thing.
Europe vs america=europa wins.
mitchell600 2 months ago
@mitchell600 You are a damn fool. Sure Europe is upgrading, but from all from much older units. Ever heard of the Zumwalt class and LCS? America is upgrading as well. Just from hearing you talk about "Europa vs America", I can tell you have no true military background. Otherwise, you're just a fanboy who joined up for fun because he couldn't find any suitable jobs. Anonymous52550 2 months ago
Foolish people
mitchell600 1 month ago
@mitchell600 APAR? So you're either in the Netherlands or the German navy, neither of which are very powerful. I'm not saying it to be mean, its just a fact. You can talk down about America's navy all you want, but it is undeniably the most powerful navy in the world today. You say AEGIS sucks, but when was the last time a US navy ship was hit by a missile? Everyone says the US military is over-rated, yet nobody has the balls to do anything about it.
KTM990WFO 1 month ago
@KTM990WFO APAR and SMART-L are worldwide sold. The americans got hit by an exocet. And skiffs.
You guys are so pathetic. Put europe vs america and you lose. Unless you use nuclear weapons.
The dutch used 1 diesel sub to sink half a carrier group of the usa in 1998 and got away unseen. They even showed the periscope a few metefs off the carrier group. It was an exercise. The English and French did the same. All subs where from 1995 or earlier. Even norway managed to do it with superold subs.
mitchell600 4 weeks ago
@mitchell600 Please, don't try to bring up the talk about diesel submarines. Did you know that the P-8 Poseidon has a hydrocarbon sensor that detects diesel fumes from submarines? And with major increases in sonobuoys, submarines are more vulnerable than ever. Especially when considering the P-8 carries 120 sonobuoys.
franknbeans4761 4 weeks ago
@mitchell600 Really? 3 Zumwalt? Well in addition to those 3 Zumwalt's, there will also be 13 more Arleigh Burkes.
And the LCS is so modular, even Saudi Arabia considered getting it for ABM tasks.
And having 32 LCS's will add A LOT too. Nice try.
franknbeans4761 1 month ago
@franknbeans4761 LCS aint that good. Their weapon layout is low and high maintance costs. Only 32 of them is not enough for us navy. And 13 more Arleighs? Those designs are from 1980... Old shit. And the cruiser replacement has been canceles. Nice try convincing me but it doesnt work.
mitchell600 4 weeks ago
@mitchell600 The Arleighs are much more capable than most modern destroyers coming out. So no, it is not, "old shit."
Like I said, the LCS can be outfitted with many diverse weapons. So saying it isn't good enough when at least 32 are planned with quite possibly 55 being built in all isn't a good excuse.
franknbeans4761 4 weeks ago
@mitchell600 Just because America has ships from the 80's,doesn't mean they're no longer effective, ever heard of the phrase "ahead of its time"? Beside, without carriers to project power,a navy is limited to defensive roles and the range of its on-board missiles.
Don't even go talking about the technology aboard,we share a lot of that tech, but I wouldn't expect you to understand. You've never even been in the innards of the ship, let alone the CIC. Just another ignorant fool blathering on Youtube.
Anonymous52550 2 months ago
@mitchell600 Arleigh Burke destroyers are on their 2nd flight type, with a 3rd planned. They have been continously upgraded. @mitchell600 you are so , mistaken my friend the British ,and French are our closest allies , and in the end Europe known's or has to realize that they depend on us like they have in the past two World Wars and in the upcoming problems that may arise,
ayeayeayeaye12 2 months ago
@mitchell600 I'm guessing some people don't realize the damage the USS Cole took when the suicide bombers decided to attack it while Cole was refueling. The hole that was created from the blast was larger than the hole that sunk the Titanic. And the tiny destroyer managed to stay afloat and is still active to this very day.
Aegis sucks? Do you even know the difference between a 2D and 3D radar?
KTM990WFO 2 months ago
@KTM990WFO I do, im in the navy dumbass.
Our APAR and europes SEAPAR is better then aegis. Everything is 3D. And AEGIS is damm old and way overrated by the humans in America. It sucks ass.
mitchell600 1 month ago
@KTM990WFO duh if ships are refueling every door and hatch will be closed from below and 1 deck above waterline. If this wasnt done it would have sunk without hasitation. The british rammed their destroyer on a rock. The whole hull had to be strengtened with wood and still sailed home with water in her hull everywhere. That is a prestation! And in areas like those are always people on the helm and look out. Especiallh with refueling. Why didnt they grab a gun and fire?
mitchell600 4 weeks ago
@mitchell600 what noob navy do you refer to and judging by the terminology you use to refer to a navy I think we can all safely assume you are 15 years old on your family computer who plays COD for about 15 hours a week then comes on youtube to troll after going to pornhub. Thanks again for your expert assessment

We'll take it!" Congress then responded "You already have your Cruisers so you won't bee needing these new nuclear powered Agis Cruisers anymore!" And the modified Virginias were cancelled.

why does the IIa have no harpoons and CIWS???
jerpao13 8 months ago
@jerpao13 I think that the Flight I and Flight II has Harpoon anti-ahip missiles and the CIWS. The Flight IIA ships does anti-piracy missions (Somali Pirates).
The USS Oscar Austin and USS Rosevelt has CIWS's, and they are Flight IIA's. The IIA are used in anti-piracy missions. It also has a new gun replacing the 5 in/54 caliber: the 5 in/62 caliber.
I'm not fully sure if this is fully true.
NatedogJr 8 months ago
@jerpao13 Harpoons can be fired through the VLS, thou you usually want 4-8 in there own stack up launchers above the hanger deck, but that varies from ship to ship, not which flight. same goes with CIWS. each ship has its own allotment of $ for the year, the ship has to juggle if they want new stuff, or fix the broken stuff. last ship i was on, opted for the new remote controlled 25mm turrets instead of upgrading from evaporated water to reverse osmosis.

Despite all the technology, it really comes down to the competency of the human beings on the boat.
swizzletik 1 year ago

Ag3nt0fCha0s 8 months ago
@Ag3nt0fCha0s Geneva convention "do not fire unless fired upon." Marcus Lutterul made an excelent, sarcastic point. " We, the soldier, do not know better than who is an enemy right? That villager is just taking his dynamite out for a walk!" Those gaurds would have been ripped apart by there own media.
SloppySardine 8 months ago
@SloppySardine
Ag3nt0fCha0s 8 months ago
@OlderG0ds the USS cole actually proved that such a massive explosion did not sink it.the weapons sensors were probably damaged, but the ship was still seaworthy after the attack.
jeetendrag10acc2 6 months ago
@OlderG0ds Which, I guess, makes the "ragheads" tactic a good one against a destroyer.
It also works when a Predator drone takes out an enemy while he is drinking tea.

@OlderG0ds In a hostile harbor on alert and still they were hit.
BernieEOD 5 months ago
@OlderG0ds Abour DDG Cole, "As if they were in some sort of battle?? "
As if preparedness to defend wouldn't matter. So, Pearl Harbor was sort of unfair and does not count, because this wasn't a battle and a replay should be fought?
Let's continue this line of thinking, destroying an aircraft on the carrier before takeoff is not exposing its weakness?
krbosak 3 months ago
@OlderG0ds
it is actualy because if u go fast enough once u are close to the destroyer the guns on it cannot hit u (they would hit the deck) and the motor boat would in fact be effective :P

Lachausis 1 year ago

We were in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
koolmoe1971 2 months ago
@swizzletik Tell them to try that again. As a matter of facts, tell them to try it right now with any DDG underway and let's see if you can find the rags afterwards..

thedreamliner2012 1 month ago
@swizzletik "After all the big talk about how powerful and invulnerable the modern destroyer is..." you can not specify where you heard/read the details of "invulnerability"-you can't.
The US Navy, and the entire US Military, is a bad ass military power. That does not mean being impervious to vulnerability.
Get a grip and tone down on your knucklehead literal paradgm and dial up some listening powers that translate into capable, intelligent synthesis.

@georgehennessy
propaganda? do you even know what that word means? obviously not. This is just an educational show talking about a type of ship. If you think THIS is propaganda you need to watch russiatoday or some north korean news, cause this ain't got nothing on those.

i don't have to read all of the other comments. You said it pretty clear in that one comment that this is propaganda. Propaganda is made by the GOVERMENT(or at least funded by it) and this program was simply an information platform for our navy.
Like i said, this "propaganda" isn't nearly as propaganderish(i know its not a word) than other countries like russia, or north korea
andrewm153351 1 year ago
@andrewm153351 @andrewm153351 I'm not interested in "gangster", what I am is an honorably discharged US vet who was watching a youtube video about a destroyer, a destroyer which I'm been aboard in port while on one of my multiple West Pac deployment, and I commented in response to another comment. You need to learn how to fucking read you fucking dipshit.
