  • I played this trap and it went alll well until 7:37. instead of using knight to c3 he/she did pawn to c3. And then pushing my bishop to c5 was useless because he then pushed his d2 pawn to d3.

Is there any way in that position to get the trap going anyway?

  • after Ng4, can't white just play c3 preparing d4 and just stop every attacking diagonal?

  • круто. спасибо!

  • thats a very nice trap..

  • even though you say "um" alot still good at explaning everything

  • @pirola1 the bishop has to move for WHITE to castle plus the ruy lopez opening includes the bishop moving to b5

  • im a beginner at chess. but what's the point of bringing the white bishop to b5 at 1:21 . i guess the opponent have to do this move so that the berlin trap would be made.

  • Comment removed

  • @pirola1 Well it is the defining move of the Ruy Lopez Opening. It is the most popular move for white in this position. The purpose of the move is to attack the knight. Since the knight is defending the e5 pawn, black now has to redefend the e5 pawn. Also, Bb5 will eventually become a pin on the knight after black advances the d pawn. Bb5 is considered stronger than Bc4, d4, or Nc3 at grandmaster level play.

  • at 2:02, Practicing vs the computer, very often he moves pawn to d4. Doesn't this cause more trouble for black as it blocks the bishop's exit?

  • @jrobichess what is the software you use for this chess tutorial? i'll subscribe!

  • What if knight moves from f3 to h2 @4:00

  • @yufeng1 Qh4, and after f4 you play g6 and win

  • @yufeng1 Nothing. You just pull your queen out and have a regular mate in 2...

  • i am very disgusted with these in all ruylopez variations white can take pawn on e5 with knight but i seen in many games where white wont take it and black aslo wont protect it and it simply castles,,but in online chess ppl are taking my poor pawn where as kasparov didnt taken it,,i felt like breaking my laptop,,,will u plz do one video on pawn grabbing blunders by white in ruylopezz plzzzzzzz

  • @2067deepak after Nxe5, 1. Qg5 2. Nf3, Qxg2 and black has the advantage and white cant castle kingside

  • wow

  • lol very nice i really like it!

  • Very nice Trap!!!

  • pelaaja93, you just play Qh4, f3, g3, Re1, Qxh2+, and he gains the knight back, maybe there's a mate following, I'm too lazy to check.

  • hahahah..this move is fucking awesome, i tried it after watching this video and it worked

  • very nice man..

  • 4:02 What if now White plays Nh2? It's another safe spot for knight

  • i think white can gain a very big lead in development and overall advantage by simply playing 4. h3 h5, followed by 5. c3 - intending to play bxc6 and hxg4 - to be able to answer a future bc5+ with d4 - does that seem right to you or am i missing something in this line? thanks!

  • Very nice. Thanks.

  • how does Bc5 eliminate d3 after h5 or in other words what would happen after 1....h5 2.d3 Bc5.....then what because if 3.Ng5 it seems to block the queen

  • At 6:07, anything wrong with Re2 rather than d4?

  • @goph000 It looks like black could play Nd4 and threaten the rook. If white takes the knight on Nd4 then his king is vulnerable to the queen advance.

I haven't played it out though, but it doesn't look too promising on initial glance.

  • @Spudst3r I see the queen advance but I don't see the checkmate. I see Nxd4, then Qh4, but with white's rook on e2 there's no adequate threat on f2, only h2. And screw bringing the knight back to f3, just push the H pawn. By keeping the white knight on d4, you'd be blocking black's bishop and threatening black's knight on g4 with TWO pieces, and let's not forget you're also a knight ahead until he takes the trade on d4, in which case you've just bought all the time you need.

  • @Spudst3r Oops I was wrong about threatening the knight with 2 pieces after h3, but same deal, white is still out of the weeds by blocking the bishop with the knight, and when black takes back with the bishop on d4, you bring queen to e1 and you have a completely solid defense on f2 with a potential counter, and black is out of weapons. And even if they did that pawn to h5 thing from earlier in the video, all white has to do is not capture the knight and he's fine.

  • why would the white push that pawn at 6:18? it's defended more than attacked.....

  • 5:29

Hey could you move rook to F2

    Pawn would take rook

The king could move to F1

The queen could check at H1

Then the king could get away?

  • @KrazyHowler

    rook goes to F2

    queen goes to h1, checkmate

  • @labbymousie oh lol

  • @KrazyHowler if Rf2 then Qh1 mate

  • Comment removed

  • isn't bishop to c5 good as well? white can only block by rookf2, then queen h1, and checkmate.

  • in chess as in life if it looks to good to be true... than it probably is

  • That knight move by black is refuted by white d2-d4 preventing the black bishop the c5 square.

  • only once someone played me this, and i made a wrong move, not in the opening but eventually i took the knight and i lost in the end!!

  • The book this tactical device is discussed in is the "Art of Attack" by Vukovic, pg 163 in the algebraic edition.

  • what if the king take the queen? 6:52

  • @Oftergap i didnt see very well, srry for the dumb question

  • @Oftergap Bishop on c5 protects the Queen

  • @Oftergap it can;t take it. it's protected by the bishop

  • Man, these are great videos! Very instructional and the audio/video quality is excellent. Two views and a new subscription.

  • yo dude which programm do u use for explanations

  • simply 5 c3 does the job, and black loses a tempo. theres no need for Re1 yet because black abandonned covering the e4 square

  • fantastic mate!!!you are really doin a wonderful job!!

  • What happens if you change 20. Nh2 instead of 20. Ne1?

  • we can prevent the checkmate and lose the rook instead!! white can sacrifice the rook for the pawn meantime giving a way for the white king to move..(5:05) :)

  • Why should there be a castling at all ? U tell me ? cuz the kings exposed to ... ?

  • nice trap..

  • So how do you not get trapped by it?

  • @joeman543 By ignoring the "threat" that the black knight puts into the king's side...

  • many traps will be done...it depends on your opponents move...

  • Once black plays pawn to g3, could white play Nf3 so it could delay the checkmate enough to prevent white from losing (attacking the queen + and attacking h2, the checkmate square. It may bring a material deficit, but not a checkmate, or am I wrong?

  • @jackRB54 After 9.Nf3, Black can play 9...Qh1#.

  • Just found your channel! Love it,

But - what if white plays 7.Nh4 ?

  • Following the mainline variation of the Ruy Lopez Berlin Defense; Then entering the trap line with night g4, what happens if white plays d4!? Your bishop cannot go to c5 nor can the queen come out to threaten mate with the night.

  • i used this trap and won the game !!! Thanks Jrobi!

  • I think this is a great trap for players in the 12-1700 range. Someone with a lower rating could up their points with a few unsuspecting, and cocky higher-rated players.

It really lends itself to an unexpected white demise..

  • for Einrichhibpshman

    1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bb5 Nf6 4 d3 Bc5 5 0-0 Ng4 6 h3 h5 7 hg hg 8 Bg5 f6

I've had this position twice, Black wins back the piece

  • I love both the Ruy Lopez traps however when playing kf6, white normally takes the knight on c6 with the bishop. Are there any handy traps or moves to make when they do try to swap off?

  • i had alot of wins with this trick , even later in the game

  • Hi Jrobi, always enjoy your videos, I have a question about this opening, if on whites 4th move, instead of castling, he plays p-d3. What would be the best move for black at this point to continue with developing this trap?

    (1.e4e5 2.Nf3Nc6 3.Bb5Nf6 4. d3 ?

    I tried 4... bc5 which leaves me with this 5.O-O Ng4

    6.h3 h5 7.hxg4 hxg4 8.Bg5 ... ?

  • thx

  • Moving the rook is a really really bad idea d3 and nc3 look much stronger in terms of an ignore the knight move.

  • Lovely traps-more ways to pwn noobs!

  • I`played this against the computer and what he does is simply not go for the exchange at g4, and he takes out the knight to c3 instead, what do you recomend here?

  • jrobichess - You need to make a video so we can see what you look like. Just a thought. I really do enjoy your vids.

  • Full Metal Jacket -- A New Chess Opening

    my latest Youtube video

  • at 7:31, (during the variation where white does not capturing the g4 knight) isn't white's best move pawn thrust to d4?? the move cuts off the black bishop to c5 move and gets center control. does this foil the trap altogether???

keep the videos coming! jrobi, your the best out there on youtube!

  • Thank you so much. One a blitz game earlier today with this trap.

  • I have played a similiar trap that comes from the alekhine variation that instead sacrafices the bishop but leads to pretty much the same end result

  • What do you use to create the arrows, and what chess download

  • Gotta love traps that require you to lose a major piece first. :)

  • Yeah but if you are white how do you avoid this?

  • I love smothered checkmates

  • awsome trap, best ive seen:)

  • In the second line you present, jrobi, after white ignores the knight and plays Re1 the position is equal (after Bc5) because R back to f1 is fine.

  • I jut managed to use this trap in a blitz game, worked a charm, cheers. :]

  • this is a sacred trap srysly

  • tournaments won since heart attack - North American Open, Stillwater, OK, Pikes Peak, CO Open, Monument, CO Open, CU Boulder Quad, Game/29 Alfred E. Packer Grill

  • can the trap still work if my friend plays bishop to c4 instead of bishop to b5?

  • @ 5:37 cant white put the f1 rook to f2 so that the g3 pawn will eat the rook on f2 and the king moves to f1?

  • what if on move 5 white plays d4?

  • your vids are awesome!

  • what if f3

  • An atacked minor piece on g4 is not uncommon in the Spanish/Ruy Lopez opening. There are definetely some interesting possibilities in those variations.

  • Wow... i like that smother mate... Kool Moves....

  • What do you call that kind o mayte?

  • i like how aat 7:03 the knight is both eying the queen and the qeen

  • this is just amazing

  • thats probably my most favourite, and by far the most beautiful mate i have ever seen

  • this trap is amazing.... one question though.

at move 5, if white responds to 4. ...Ng4 with 5. d4 preventing the Bishop access to the c5 square, then, play follows 5. ...exd5 6. Nxd5 NxNd5 7. QxNd5 White is in a much better position. Queen is attacking the unprotected Knight on g4. After the knight moves.. 7. ...Nf6 white now has the tempo with better position and can continue to develop 8. Nf6 (eyeing d5) and white should easily be able to secure the win.

    ~Aqua

  • that was great thanks

  • what if he wont do the castling???

  • @bytmig135

    try the mortier trap then

  • I also just wanted to comment that I managed to beat Chess Titans, level 10, on the first try using this technique.

    Pure brilliance.

  • @keatonthefox omg!! really ?!?!?!? It's so hard tho...

  • realy nice

  • thanks for all your vids man, very detailed

  • I'm sorry but some traps are a little irealistic !

  • if white moves pawn to d3 at any time before black knight to g4, the trap won't work....

  • white cant stop all the threats and get a good game by ignoring the knight which move two times in the opening by playing c3 instead of Re1 or Nc3.

  • What if at 4:11 white plays knight to h2 ? black moves queen to h4, white rook to e1 and white will get out of the trap with no piece lost.

  • @shadowdancerRFW

    afterwards I would say Qxh2, K-f1, Qh1, Ke2, Qxg2 - still not looking good for white

or did I miss something there?

  • @cru3linside i agree, it looks bad, but still better than being checkmate. i'm gonna compete in a chess tourny and i need all these traps ;) this one is awesome because many players play king's pawn opening then castle, also many players would fall for the knight sacrifice ;)

  • Hey what program do you use for this cool chess lesson? I wanna use it.

  • Hey jrobi thanks for sharing this, my favourite chess trap for sure. I tried it out in an online game just now and won in 17 moves :)

  • to heAwsomBeaverrr -

    1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 Nf6 4. O-O Ng4 5. h3 h5 6. hxg4 hxg4 7. Nh2

    Qh4 8. Re1 Qxh2+ 9. Kf1 Nd4!!

cuts off the White King and checkmates.

There is no escape from the Pole, my friend.

  • @BrianWallChess sory for the mistake. my bad

  • to heAwsomBeaverrr -

cuts off the White King's escape and checkmates

  • holy crap loved this trap

  • Very interesting trap, I'm not really into chess but the traps are quite unique, especially this one!

  • I'm a baneling now

  • nice trap

  • do u know all these techniques??

if u do... than i must believe that u are pretty good at chess

  • Nice trap, black is indeed in good position even if white doesn't fall for it but has to be careful not to lose the track of whites efforts to secure defence

  • DAMMMMMMMMMMMM

  • i was a victim of this trap but i escaped it: 1.e4 e5 2.Kf3 Kc6 3.Bb5 Kf6 4. O-O Kg4 5.h3 h5! 6. h x g4? h x g4 here white must not mistake : 7.Kh2! Qh4 8.Re1 Qh2+ 8.kf1 and there you go!

  • sorry for all the mistakes (K instead of N) and the double eight turn. i was in a hurry

  • i did the 7:00 mate on my frnd!!

  • y is it called the "fishing pole" trap?????

  • 4:04 White night moves to H2

    Checkmate is gone

  • @UrbanMan1ac

Not really, white is still in trouble after ...Qh4. Knight is pinned cause mate on h1.

So white probably has to play Re1, which allows black to capture the knight. So black got the piece back and a winning posistion.

Can't believe people fell for that trap in normal time controls. That is just underestimating your opponent that he drops a piece for nothing. The trap works better with a bischop on g4 cause you won't lose tempo.

  • nub

  • very Nice trap. Although there are a few smarter moves for White

  • Balandin, Kramnik's High School Chess teammate was on my email list so Kramnik is well aware of the Fishing Pole.

  • I feel great - just started posting Chess articles for the Examiner - I am amazed at how Jrobi gets so many hits - my Rambo video has 6,000 views just from Jrobi leakage -

  • was curious if kramnik ever sprung this on anyone since he practicly revitalized the berlin back in the 90's. if you try and use this and say instead of white castling he plays 4.d3 ruining the fishing pole trap you can still spring the move 4...Ne7 if white takes the proffered pawn with 5.Nxe5? and most will, 5...c6 springs the famous mortimers trap, after 6.Ba4 or 6.Bc4 doesnt matter black wins with 6...Qa5+.

  • at 2:28 how does "pushing pawn to d4" protect the other pawn from the knight?

  • I play with Brian Wall every once in a while. He just had a minor heart attack the other day. Wish him well!

  • That is horrible news - I hope everything turns out okay. =(

  • @jrobichess but its not a special ruy lopes trap its a normal tactic.. i read somewere about it i think it was essential sacrifices... but also could have been another book cant remember

  • Not at all - the trap is very effective even if white doesn't fall for it. Black will have a good game either way.

  • Vukovic - Art of Attack - 60 years ago warned against Bg5 - ... f6 - Bh4 - ... g5 - Bg3 - ...h4 which many schools of fish fall for.

Hi Jrobi, always enjoy your videos, I have a question about this opening, if on whites 4th move, instead of castling, he plays p-d3.

  • this would also work on italian right?

  • I have won a lot of online games with this

  • sick, i like the smothered mate too

  • yeah me too i love smothered mate

  • What a awesome video! thanks you and hope more from you.

  • so many ums, but the explanation is great

  • When I started Chess many years back, I actually fell for this trap to a chess engine =\

  • I love this trap. Although in my earlier match it didn't win it immediately for me, it took enough material for him to resign. He was much higher rated too.

  • A better move: Bxc3, dxc3 and Nxe5. A free pawn.

  • @TheRoopeKonna Which is like always in the ruy lopez met by Qd4. NO FREE PAWN in fact :)

  • Thank you for that output, clipzor :)

  • i love "smothered mate!" - gotta love it

  • Very beautiful trap mate,I beat the chess in windows 7 on the 10 dificulty setting!

    Sorry for spelling mistakes ^.^

  • Cattle? Get off the chess channel, farmer!

  • good trap but dont count on it working very often, so many variations can take place to stop the check mate, but will help with gaining mat'l

  • beautiful trap

  • i just won a few minutes using this trap in blitz game...

  • Hi jrobichess,

I received my first win using this opening today. Thanks for your great videos. - Supernatural007

  • Hey, just a quick question about a variation I thought of. What should black do if white defends the H4 square with a pawn move to G3? Just move the bishop to C5? Thanks!

  • Nice! Really learnt something here!

  • Ownage!

  • white can ignore that knight it is just a nuisance and play immediate c3 instead of h3

  • I managed to win against computer using this trap, against both the Ruy lopez opening and againt English Opening.

  • @danpt2000: what program and what difficulty?

  • Titan Chess, Level 6 out of 10 levels.

  • thanks. so it doesn't work on level 7?

  • this trap is the balls! well done again j

  • what if white dosen't castle and instead do Nc3

  • nice one

  • very cool !
