I played this trap and it went alll well until 7:37. instead of using knight to c3 he/she did pawn to c3. And then pushing my bishop to c5 was useless because he then pushed his d2 pawn to d3.
Is there any way in that position to get the trap going anyway?
im a beginner at chess. but what's the point of bringing the white bishop to b5 at 1:21 . i guess the opponent have to do this move so that the berlin trap would be made.
@pirola1 Well it is the defining move of the Ruy Lopez Opening. It is the most popular move for white in this position. The purpose of the move is to attack the knight. Since the knight is defending the e5 pawn, black now has to redefend the e5 pawn. Also, Bb5 will eventually become a pin on the knight after black advances the d pawn. Bb5 is considered stronger than Bc4, d4, or Nc3 at grandmaster level play.
i am very disgusted with these in all ruylopez variations white can take pawn on e5 with knight but i seen in many games where white wont take it and black aslo wont protect it and it simply castles,,but in online chess ppl are taking my poor pawn where as kasparov didnt taken it,,i felt like breaking my laptop,,,will u plz do one video on pawn grabbing blunders by white in ruylopezz plzzzzzzz
i think white can gain a very big lead in development and overall advantage by simply playing 4. h3 h5, followed by 5. c3 - intending to play bxc6 and hxg4 - to be able to answer a future bc5+ with d4 - does that seem right to you or am i missing something in this line? thanks!
how does Bc5 eliminate d3 after h5 or in other words what would happen after 1....h5 2.d3 Bc5.....then what because if 3.Ng5 it seems to block the queen
@Spudst3r I see the queen advance but I don't see the checkmate. I see Nxd4, then Qh4, but with white's rook on e2 there's no adequate threat on f2, only h2. And screw bringing the knight back to f3, just push the H pawn. By keeping the white knight on d4, you'd be blocking black's bishop and threatening black's knight on g4 with TWO pieces, and let's not forget you're also a knight ahead until he takes the trade on d4, in which case you've just bought all the time you need.
@Spudst3r Oops I was wrong about threatening the knight with 2 pieces after h3, but same deal, white is still out of the weeds by blocking the bishop with the knight, and when black takes back with the bishop on d4, you bring queen to e1 and you have a completely solid defense on f2 with a potential counter, and black is out of weapons. And even if they did that pawn to h5 thing from earlier in the video, all white has to do is not capture the knight and he's fine.
we can prevent the checkmate and lose the rook instead!! white can sacrifice the rook for the pawn meantime giving a way for the white king to move..(5:05) :)
Once black plays pawn to g3, could white play Nf3 so it could delay the checkmate enough to prevent white from losing (attacking the queen + and attacking h2, the checkmate square. It may bring a material deficit, but not a checkmate, or am I wrong?
Following the mainline variation of the Ruy Lopez Berlin Defense; Then entering the trap line with night g4, what happens if white plays d4!? Your bishop cannot go to c5 nor can the queen come out to threaten mate with the night.
I think this is a great trap for players in the 12-1700 range. Someone with a lower rating could up their points with a few unsuspecting, and cocky higher-rated players.
It really lends itself to an unexpected white demise..
I love both the Ruy Lopez traps however when playing kf6, white normally takes the knight on c6 with the bishop. Are there any handy traps or moves to make when they do try to swap off?
Hi Jrobi, always enjoy your videos, I have a question about this opening, if on whites 4th move, instead of castling, he plays p-d3. What would be the best move for black at this point to continue with developing this trap?
(1.e4e5 2.Nf3Nc6 3.Bb5Nf6 4. d3 ?

An atacked minor piece on g4 is not uncommon in the Spanish/Ruy Lopez opening. There are definetely some interesting possibilities in those variations.
at move 5, if white responds to 4. ...Ng4 with 5. d4 preventing the Bishop access to the c5 square, then, play follows 5. ...exd5 6. Nxd5 NxNd5 7. QxNd5 White is in a much better position. Queen is attacking the unprotected Knight on g4. After the knight moves.. 7. ...Nf6 white now has the tempo with better position and can continue to develop 8. Nf6 (eyeing d5) and white should easily be able to secure the win.
@cru3linside i agree, it looks bad, but still better than being checkmate. i'm gonna compete in a chess tourny and i need all these traps ;) this one is awesome because many players play king's pawn opening then castle, also many players would fall for the knight sacrifice ;)
Nice trap, black is indeed in good position even if white doesn't fall for it but has to be careful not to lose the track of whites efforts to secure defence
i was a victim of this trap but i escaped it: 1.e4 e5 2.Kf3 Kc6 3.Bb5 Kf6 4. O-O Kg4 5.h3 h5! 6. h x g4? h x g4 here white must not mistake : 7.Kh2! Qh4 8.Re1 Qh2+ 8.kf1 and there you go!
Not really, white is still in trouble after ...Qh4. Knight is pinned cause mate on h1.
So white probably has to play Re1, which allows black to capture the knight. So black got the piece back and a winning posistion.
Can't believe people fell for that trap in normal time controls. That is just underestimating your opponent that he drops a piece for nothing. The trap works better with a bischop on g4 cause you won't lose tempo.
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 4.Nc3 Nf6 5.d3 d6 6.Ng5 0-0 7.f3 h6 8.h4 hg5!!! (at the risk of repeating myself, 8...Nh5! is strong)
9.hg5 Ne8 10.f4 g6 11.f5 d5!!! (Must be the trend. The really strong programs usually play this so the Bc5 can defend against a potential Nd5-e7+ maneuver)
Fishing Pole inventor Life Master Jack Young also plays it as White, calling this the Tomb Raider - a castled King is in a coffin - 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bc4 Bc5 4 d3 d6 5 Nc3 Nf6 6 Ng5!!
I feel great - just started posting Chess articles for the Examiner - I am amazed at how Jrobi gets so many hits - my Rambo video has 6,000 views just from Jrobi leakage -
was curious if kramnik ever sprung this on anyone since he practicly revitalized the berlin back in the 90's. if you try and use this and say instead of white castling he plays 4.d3 ruining the fishing pole trap you can still spring the move 4...Ne7 if white takes the proffered pawn with 5.Nxe5? and most will, 5...c6 springs the famous mortimers trap, after 6.Ba4 or 6.Bc4 doesnt matter black wins with 6...Qa5+.
@jrobichess but its not a special ruy lopes trap its a normal tactic.. i read somewere about it i think it was essential sacrifices... but also could have been another book cant remember
Hi Jrobi, always enjoy your videos, I have a question about this opening, if on whites 4th move, instead of castling, he plays p-d3. What would be the best move for black at this point to continue with developing this trap?

I love this trap. Although in my earlier match it didn't win it immediately for me, it took enough material for him to resign. He was much higher rated too.
Hey, just a quick question about a variation I thought of. What should black do if white defends the H4 square with a pawn move to G3? Just move the bishop to C5? Thanks!
I played this trap and it went alll well until 7:37. instead of using knight to c3 he/she did pawn to c3. And then pushing my bishop to c5 was useless because he then pushed his d2 pawn to d3.

@goph000 It looks like black could play Nd4 and threaten the rook. If white takes the knight on Nd4 then his king is vulnerable to the queen advance.
I haven't played it out though, but it doesn't look too promising on initial glance.

omb Raider Attack ... Giuoco Piano 5/3/09
White:Bozo ( Jack Young )
Black: Kasparov Chessmate (Broderband) @ 40/1 (2500!?)

Balandin, Kramnik's High School Chess teammate was on my email list so Kramnik is well aware of the Fishing Pole.

I feel great - just started posting Chess articles for the Examiner - I am amazed at how Jrobi gets so many hits - my Rambo video has 6,000 views just from Jrobi leakage -

was curious if kramnik ever sprung this on anyone since he practicly revitalized the berlin back in the 90's. if you try and use this and say instead of white castling he plays 4.d3 ruining the fishing pole trap you can still spring the move 4...Ne7 if white takes the proffered pawn with 5.Nxe5? and most will, 5...c6 springs the famous mortimers trap, after 6.Ba4 or 6.Bc4 doesnt matter black wins with 6...Qa5+.

at 2:28 how does "pushing pawn to d4" protect the other pawn from the knight?

I play with Brian Wall every once in a while. He just had a minor heart attack the other day. Wish him well!

@jrobichess but its not a special ruy lopes trap its a normal tactic.. i read somewere about it i think it was essential sacrifices... but also could have been another book cant remember

This comment has received too many negative votes show
this trap is really bad, leaves you in a bad position, and all white has to do is move the pawn to d3, then Bg5 to block in blacks queen Easy
steveoplacebo 1 year ago
Not at all - the trap is very effective even if white doesn't fall for it. Black will have a good game either way.

Vukovic - Art of Attack - 60 years ago warned against Bg5 - ... f6 - Bh4 - ... g5 - Bg3 - ...h4 which many schools of fish fall for.

Hi Jrobi, always enjoy your videos, I have a question about this opening, if on whites 4th move, instead of castling, he plays p-d3. What would be the best move for black at this point to continue with developing this trap?
(1.e4e5 2.Nf3Nc6 3.Bb5Nf6 4. d3 ?
I tried 4... bc5 which leaves me with this 5.O-O Ng4
6.h3 h5 7.hxg4 hxg4 8.Bg5 ... ?

When I started Chess many years back, I actually fell for this trap to a chess engine =\

I love this trap. Although in my earlier match it didn't win it immediately for me, it took enough material for him to resign. He was much higher rated too.

A better move: Bxc3, dxc3 and Nxe5. A free pawn.

good trap but dont count on it working very often, so many variations can take place to stop the check mate, but will help with gaining mat'l

Hey, just a quick question about a variation I thought of. What should black do if white defends the H4 square with a pawn move to G3? Just move the bishop to C5? Thanks!

white can ignore that knight it is just a nuisance and play immediate c3 instead of h3
