I am an Englishmen and I will say this once, the French kicked England ass so much it came out the other side, but we heated them at Waterloo and The battle of the Nile, etc. In WW2 we fought for France and lost but soon earned it back in D-Day. Everyone who complains needs to shut up, we were enemies back then not now, now we fight on the same side, so everyone shut up!
@FienStudios - don't forget about the Battle of Trafalgar. That was a victory for the British fleet under Lord Nelson...beating the French and Spanish fleet.
@FienStudios Yes, no doubt it did. Given that even at the Battle of Trafalgar almost half the British ships were the war prizes of France or Spain, and that by the end of Napoleonic hostilities, most of the serving British ships had been built in France, I'm sure France must've been doing a fine job kicking England's "ass". lol, Englishman?

I dont even understand why U all compare french & english people of the days depicted in this movie to french & english people of nowdays... Most of U didn't even do a military period and U talk about things U know nothing about.... History has to be studied..
Also that movie, although its a good movie with brilliant sailing scenes, is the worst fucking example of french bashing i've ever seen : that french ship simply never existed. that's a fucking historical lie!!! it was an AMERICAN ship (USS ESSEX) that british captain Jack Aubrey pursuited. that was during the anglo-american war of 1812. but guess what, the movie's american and got released in 2003 (oupps France just refused to follow america's war for oil in Irak...).
1066 : England surrender to norman french / invasion of England
1215 : England surrender to France / Philippe Auguste decisively win over English kings
1453 : England surrender to France / end of the hundred years war
1781 : England surrender to France / end of the american war of independance : treaty of Paris
History says that France can also kick british asses! Also in the Napoleonic wars, proud british paid the Austrian and the Russian to fight in their place. So decent...

@townsley2 Goodness now frenchie... Whatever the US owed France from the revolution was paid back in full over the course of the world wars. As for the Statue of Liberty... no backsies.
@townsley2 Not nearly on the same scale. You could bring up a couple of inconsequential battles like Braddock's Defeat but ultimately nothing compares to lopsided victories like Crecy, Cravant, Verneuil, Nile, St Vincent, Trafalgar, Quebec.... etc. I'm sorry but while the French fucked the Prussians, Russians, Austrians, Spanish... they never got the better of the British on any notable scale.
@townsley2 Lol... you know why? Because the French never again engaged the English in open pitched battle with battle lines drawn up. They either had to outnumber the English by about 5 to 1 or raid lightly garrisoned towns. Additionally, the population of France was 5x that of England. No French victory equals Crecy or Agincourt. You were attacked by a minow nation and got thrashed for nearly 100 years. All the gold pillaged from French towns was used to fund our War of the Roses unfortunately
@townsley2 You were lucky Henry V died of dysentery just 6 months before that pathetic French King did. Henry V gave birth to a weak and effeminate son, obviously caused by his marriage to a French princess.
And of course Norman were completely french when they invaded England ( amongst warriors from Champagne, Paris, Britanny, Anjou...), they got franchisied in the past 9th, 10th and 11th century, were vassal of France, spoke only french, and call themselves "Franci" (that means "french"). And the english court got ruled by french nobles although it didn't depend on the french capetian royal crown...
@townsley2 1782 - Saintes, defeat of the French/Spanish expeditionary force that was going to be used to take Jamaica and all Britain's Caribbean possessions.... the same French fleet that bottled up Cornwallis up at Yorktown..... SWEET revenge. There was no surrendering in the wars you have just mentioned, the English simply left. And 1066 was not in any shape or form a French victory so stop trying to use that as your trump card.
Guillaume le conquérant spoke only french, was of french religion, of french blood (as every Northmen settled there), had sworn allegiance to the king of France, invaded England along with huge french forces around and Normandy was a duchy of France. so stop it with your vikings roots propaganda, Normans in 1066 had absolutely nothing in common with their past ancesters. They were fully french although they fought for themselves. Deal with the truth. BTW : I'm norman moron !
Can u read ? Have I written he did it for the interest of the king ? Nope ! But he definitely was of french culture. Now if your not cultivated enought, or just to embiterred to accept the fact that Normans were indistingible from the french nor that french kings had been reigning over England for centuries after the invasion, it's your revisionism problem. Not only was he of french culture, but he brought everything from France to England.
@townsley2 The only revisionism here is from you. The Franks and the Normans were two completely separate people. The fact is they had adopted the language. I have to laugh at you trying to convince people that French kings ever ruled over England. Have you ever heard of the Hundred Years War? It was completely the other way round. English kings reigning over large parts of France for centuries after the Norman Conquest, and for a time came close to taking all of it.
Look man, I don't give a shit what u've been told, I've been studying Franks & norman shared history for years and i just know far better than you what it is all about. Normen settled in France as Vikings, but got franchisied (left their language, religion, wives to french ones) + the invasion involved lots of franks alongside normen.
Now as Historian Macaulay says : "During the century and a half after the Conquest, there is no English history. The French Kings of England rose to an eminence which was the wonder of all nations " Enought said. Are you an historian ? i don't think so.
After franco norman kings of England felt, The Plantagenest house (counts from Anjou)started ruling England with Henri II Plantagenest (100% french guy) from 1152.
English started being English after John lackland lost every land in the continent & had to sign the magna Carta in 1215. From then, English should only focus on their island. So that makes indeed 150 years of french kings living in France, speaking french, and ruling England.
As for The HYW (200 yrs later) I know that period quite better than you as well. No english king officially took the french throne (Henry V died just before coronation in 1422 and Henry VI's coronation got revoked due to the salic law. He got his ass quickly kicked by the french anyway so that England lost the war in 1453).... Now, I know all this makes a lot of information for a small hollywood washed brain, but that 'll help you, I'm rather positive about that.
@townsley2 Yes, they fought for themselves, because they were Norman, not French. If a French duke with allegiance to the King of France had invaded and conquered England, do you honestly think England and France would keep on fighting each other almost non stop for another 800 years?
@townsley2 Yeah nice one, lets totally discount Wellingtons 15 straight victory run against Napoleons best Marshall's in Spain and Portugal shall we? You know Salamanca, Vitoria.... etc. God Forbid we shouldn't mention Nile or Trafalgar... the latter being the most decisive battle in the age of sail.
@Talbot6832 50% of the french losses in Iberia caused by guerrillas, earned by the red blood of 100 000 portuguese, and +400 000 spanish, anglo portuguese victories that were defeats"This won´t do,write me down a victory".
If at this time one could take off that channel, called "english",quite rightly,it should have the name of those it saved for centuries.my god,Britain would be defending the highlands in 3 months.
@StellandBlood Had Britain been a continental power it would have designed its military around that fact. However, Britain's best interests, as an Island nation, were naturally going to be in Ocean trade and dominance. It succeeded in this vital area decisively and was still able to prop up the crumbling central European states AND send it's army abroad to spearhead the defeat of Napoleon's Empire in 15 straight battles.
WWI UK sent a force that never overpassed 2 Mil troops, when the french had in constant 8.6 Mil troops, and were the backbone of every major victory in the west, still this was the modern war in continental Europe were the British were most important, despite not the most.
15 straight battles, with "write me down victories" in the middle, where the UK was a totally secondary force, making at max 50 000 troops of a allied army, which ranged from 450 000 to +1 M troops.
@Mrscoobycoco, What a stupid comment. All Britain does is pay others to do their dirty work. There is this famous saying in Germany that Britain will fight bravely to the last Austrian, Prussian and Russian blood.
@horswilla Well then don't speak about things you have no knowledge , simple matter of common sense. I don't know if your are english or american , probably english i guess , if tihs is right you must know that France is one of your ally and as an ally we fight in the same coalition indeed. You can have your own opinion about it , however you better read and before talking shit , otherwise you will look like an ignorant baby boy !
@horswilla Hey litte ignorant kid ! What Cacalauncher said is not pro-french at all , it's just what it's written in history books which i doubt you wrote at least once in your sad life ! You ignorant little peace of shit always believe what you see within movies however you never have the intelligence to read books in order to check if what it's shown in the movie is really true or even accurate . Sooo believe , this is no bullshit when we say that France still and was a major power
@1754a so that thing about flipping burgers and frying freedom fries is in the history books? Your right as well, I haven't written a single history book, I like to think i have read a bit but there is probably a lot out there that I haven't had the chance to see. As for france being a major power, you were right, they WERE a major power. But hey are probably in the same boat as us know, seeing as there are ideas spinning around within the armed forces abut us two forming a sort of coalition
Lol, the french are so inept in the hand to hand combat in this movie while the Brit seamen are all Achilles. The movie was good until this patriotic "bad guys can't shoot straight" bullshit.
Its funny because the tactics used by the british admiral were used by the french corsair Surcouf who has neve rbeen defeated and sanked a lot of british merchant ships, outnumbered 2 vs 1 sometimes.
@iloveeverything219 Surcouf mostly captured ships who surrendered, he did not sank them. And I'm not referring to tactics of not flying his true colors, I'm referring to the hand-to-hand and close rifle combat (nothing to do with tactics, or Surcouf for that matter) inin this movie that ridiculously favors the British which have like 7 casualties after boarding while the french seem to have like 90% casualties on a ship manned by hundreds. Read comments before you reply to them.
@iloveeverything219 And how is the monarchies not wanting a repeat of the french revolution in their kingdom not understandable? Self-preservation is a big reason to go to war, last I checked.
@CacaLauncher23 it appears by the amount of comment you have left that you very clearly have an agenda and/or have a stick up your ass over the Napoleonic war's outcome. kindly stop babbling your pro-french dribble and leave this awesome film alone!
@horswilla what agenda could I possibly have over this? And none of what I said is pro-french. I was simply adressing crass ignorance. If more people did that, we wouldn't be constantly surrounded by loud mouthed retards. You sound like one actually.
"English whaler Syren, this is Acheron of France! You have no possibility, no chance, but you have ha warning! Stop now, or we will destroy your ship. English whaler, this is your last warning, stop NOW, or we will destroy you!"
Maybe if the french werent renown for surrendering they wouldnt be shown in this cowardly way, but then again, they did make a tank with 3 forward gears and 14 reverse ones so they dont help themselves very much
@iloveeverything219 Agreed. The French were for centuries not simply fearsome battlefield antagonists (indeed, the most fearsome in the pre-modern era), but innovators in the desgin of their weapons of war. Records make repeated mention of the British shipbuilding agencies taking note of French design and building warships accordingly. All power ebbs and flows; the British victory over the French in the Napoleonic era is celebrated for the difficulty and indeed unlikelihood of that victory.
Well, I never got why England kept declaring war on France during the revolutionnary and napoleonic wars, if you look at it closely, Napoleon never declared war to anyone excepted Russia in 1812.
@bigbeatz06 The 100yrs war was a family feud between the Dukes of France(kings of England) and the French when the direct line of the french throne ran out
@iloveeverything219 The monarchies of Europe didn't want the French Revolution to spread, and understandably so. Simple as that. England had the luxury of watching its allies get steamrolled over and sending troops when (100 days) or where (Spain) Napoleon was struggling.
@iloveeverything219 i didnt say they were cowards, i said that they were famously thought of as cowards. the tank thing is true though. the french in ww2 were actually quite brave in that they stayed to defend the beach so the B.E.F could escape, and it was that bravery that made the british go back for them, (free french)
@helghandan1 you should remain silent when you know so little of history. France philosophy of war was primarly offense all throughout the Napoleonic War to WW1. Napoleone was constantly on the offensive and you'll probably ask what I'm referring to in WW1 or the franco-prussian war, which will further proof your ignorance. The enemy of France calling them cowards is not exactly a surprise since this is what enemies do.
@helghandan1 The Brits have been fucking with France, safe from their Island for centuries, throwing their weight around on the winner in conflicts (in this case Coalitions) side. The US does the same. The French could certainly call the British cowards as well and some do, but you don't hear it since you're an anglophone and you think that your english-spoken reality is the only one that exist. Stick to flipping burgers and frying freedom fries....it' will be less embarassing.
Everyone like to fly the flag high w/o judging the actions of their own country..fact is,both the British and french were villians but a movie such as this one portraits the French as sly and cunning while the Brits(english!) are show as....Russel crow and that crippled kid.Courage and honour. That is not the way it is,all colonialists were villians incl Dutch, portugal,Belgians,Danish but a LOT lesser in magnitude esp compared to brits, spain,France,Turks etc.Enemy is american ship as per the book
Those war drums in the soundtrack, and the flag rising up, and the cannons being rolled out... Gotta be proud of those fictional characters XD The French accent is a little unrealistic but I don't know, maybe French sounded a little different back then? The soundtrack is great for the battle as well, sounds almost Oriental.
@FierceGriffon SHUT up,BNP ,ENGLAND FIRST IDIOT.We sound way better than this shit one given.Look at Napoleon's accent on NTW!French are better than you cowardly british!
@FierceGriffon ur a fucking dumb ass u stupid dutch piece of shit ur country sucks u people hat because America has been on top since we have become a country u piece of shit nobody likes the dutch anyway ur women r fucking ugly
@FierceGriffon Im mad cause u brought us into it when we didnt do anything and ur right the noble dutch wtf do u guys do that so great oh wait nothing ur just a bunch of asses that apparently start fights for no reason oh after i was done peeing your flag looked better
What class of ship is the Acheron? If she's a frigate, that's one hell of a puncher. No offense to that particular class, but I don't really see much in a frigate. If it has cannons, it's gonna do damage for a fact. However, isn't Surprise supposed to be a frigate? It only has 24 guns, so I'd think of it more of...a small corvette?
@DarthUltronicus They mention in the film that the Acheron is a heavy frigate, and designed to be a lot tougher than the Surprise. I guess she kinda fits in a class between frigate and genuine ship-of-the-line.
This is a movie about courage in the face of adversity. It's about your believes, superstitions, values and what you are willing to sacrifice for your friends and country.
The British do have some specific eccentricities which were picked up on in the film, probably because it was made by an Australian.
thanks, have to look at it tonite

townsley2 2 days ago
@MrStig691
Now as Historian Macaulay says : "During the century and a half after the Conquest, there is no English history. The French Kings of England rose to an eminence which was the wonder of all nations " Enought said. Are you an historian ? i don't think so.
After franco norman kings of England felt, The Plantagenest house (counts from Anjou)started ruling England with Henri II Plantagenest (100% french guy) from 1152.
townsley2 2 days ago
@MrStig691
English started being English after John lackland lost every land in the continent & had to sign the magna Carta in 1215. From then, English should only focus on their island. So that makes indeed 150 years of french kings living in France, speaking french, and ruling England.
townsley2 2 days ago
@MrStig691
Now, I know all this makes a lot of information for a small hollywood washed brain, but that 'll help you, I'm rather positive about that.
townsley2 2 days ago
@townsley2 Oh by the way, we are all from Africa. Your logic.
Talbot6832 6 days ago
@Talbot6832
My logic : I don't speak Zoulou / English kings spoke only french ! Period.
townsley2 6 days ago
@townsley2 Yes, they fought for themselves, because they were Norman, not French. If a French duke with allegiance to the King of France had invaded and conquered England, do you honestly think England and France would keep on fighting each other almost non stop for another 800 years?
MrStig691 3 days ago

StellandBlood 2 weeks ago
@StellandBlood Had Britain been a continental power it would have designed its military around that fact. However, Britain's best interests, as an Island nation, were naturally going to be in Ocean trade and dominance. It succeeded in this vital area decisively and was still able to prop up the crumbling central European states AND send it's army abroad to spearhead the defeat of Napoleon's Empire in 15 straight battles.
Talbot6832 6 days ago
WWI UK sent a force that never overpassed 2 Mil troops, when the french had in constant 8.6 Mil troops, and were the backbone of every major victory in the west, still this was the modern war in continental Europe were the British were most important, despite not the most.
15 straight battles, with "write me down victories" in the middle, where the UK was a totally secondary force, making at max 50 000 troops of a allied army, which ranged from 450 000 to +1 M troops.
StellandBlood 6 days ago
you should see how Latouche Treville defeated Horatio Nelson at Boulogne in 1801.
16 British ships surrendered the moment they saw Robert Sucouf's ship at Ile de France. Fact.

1754a 6 months ago
@horswilla Hey litte ignorant kid ! What Cacalauncher said is not pro-french at all , it's just what it's written in history books which i doubt you wrote at least once in your sad life ! You ignorant little peace of shit always believe what you see within movies however you never have the intelligence to read books in order to check if what it's shown in the movie is really true or even accurate . Sooo believe , this is no bullshit when we say that France still and was a major power
1754a 6 months ago
@1754a so that thing about flipping burgers and frying freedom fries is in the history books? Your right as well, I haven't written a single history book, I like to think i have read a bit but there is probably a lot out there that I haven't had the chance to see. As for france being a major power, you were right, they WERE a major power. But hey are probably in the same boat as us know, seeing as there are ideas spinning around within the armed forces abut us two forming a sort of coalition
horswilla 6 months ago
Lol, the french are so inept in the hand to hand combat in this movie while the Brit seamen are all Achilles. The movie was good until this patriotic "bad guys can't shoot straight" bullshit.
CacaLauncher23 6 months ago
@CacaLauncher23
Its funny because the tactics used by the british admiral were used by the french corsair Surcouf who has neve rbeen defeated and sanked a lot of british merchant ships, outnumbered 2 vs 1 sometimes.
Understandably ? No sir I don't agree at all.
iloveeverything219 6 months ago
@iloveeverything219 Surcouf mostly captured ships who surrendered, he did not sank them. And I'm not referring to tactics of not flying his true colors, I'm referring to the hand-to-hand and close rifle combat (nothing to do with tactics, or Surcouf for that matter) inin this movie that ridiculously favors the British which have like 7 casualties after boarding while the french seem to have like 90% casualties on a ship manned by hundreds. Read comments before you reply to them.
CacaLauncher23 6 months ago
@iloveeverything219 And how is the monarchies not wanting a repeat of the french revolution in their kingdom not understandable? Self-preservation is a big reason to go to war, last I checked.
CacaLauncher23 6 months ago
@CacaLauncher23 it appears by the amount of comment you have left that you very clearly have an agenda and/or have a stick up your ass over the Napoleonic war's outcome. kindly stop babbling your pro-french dribble and leave this awesome film alone!
horswilla 6 months ago
@horswilla what agenda could I possibly have over this? And none of what I said is pro-french. I was simply adressing crass ignorance. If more people did that, we wouldn't be constantly surrounded by loud mouthed retards. You sound like one actually.

Maybe if the french werent renown for surrendering they wouldnt be shown in this cowardly way, but then again, they did make a tank with 3 forward gears and 14 reverse ones so they dont help themselves very much
helghandan1 8 months ago
@helghandan1
Of course they are cowards, just look at the stats:
There have been 53 major wars in Europe
France had been a belligerent in 49 of them; UK 43.
In 185 battles that France had fought over the past 800 years, their armies had won 132 times, lost 43 times and drawn only 10.
Giving the French military the best record of any country in Europe".
BBC History
France at the battle of Vauchamps lost 1 man for 15 germans killed...
..... And we say today that the never won a war.
iloveeverything219 8 months ago
@iloveeverything219 Agreed. The French were for centuries not simply fearsome battlefield antagonists (indeed, the most fearsome in the pre-modern era), but innovators in the desgin of their weapons of war. Records make repeated mention of the British shipbuilding agencies taking note of French design and building warships accordingly. All power ebbs and flows; the British victory over the French in the Napoleonic era is celebrated for the difficulty and indeed unlikelihood of that victory.
niclasjt 8 months ago
@niclasjt
Well, I never got why England kept declaring war on France during the revolutionnary and napoleonic wars, if you look at it closely, Napoleon never declared war to anyone excepted Russia in 1812.

bigbeatz06 8 months ago
@bigbeatz06 The 100yrs war was a family feud between the Dukes of France(kings of England) and the French when the direct line of the french throne ran out
1stLordTheAdmiralty1 8 months ago
@iloveeverything219 The monarchies of Europe didn't want the French Revolution to spread, and understandably so. Simple as that. England had the luxury of watching its allies get steamrolled over and sending troops when (100 days) or where (Spain) Napoleon was struggling.
CacaLauncher23 6 months ago
@niclasjt And in fact it was not such a victory, it was the victory of all Europe against the french.
6U4RD1AN 7 months ago
@iloveeverything219 But you say that only because you love everything...even the french ;).
6U4RD1AN 7 months ago
@iloveeverything219 i didnt say they were cowards, i said that they were famously thought of as cowards. the tank thing is true though. the french in ww2 were actually quite brave in that they stayed to defend the beach so the B.E.F could escape, and it was that bravery that made the british go back for them, (free french)
helghandan1 7 months ago
@helghandan1 and what about french fleet beeing sunk by english? not french saved brits ,it was german dumbness and idiots in high command. ....
WilhelmAUT 7 months ago
@helghandan1 you should remain silent when you know so little of history. France philosophy of war was primarly offense all throughout the Napoleonic War to WW1. Napoleone was constantly on the offensive and you'll probably ask what I'm referring to in WW1 or the franco-prussian war, which will further proof your ignorance. The enemy of France calling them cowards is not exactly a surprise since this is what enemies do.
CacaLauncher23 6 months ago

That is not the way it is,all colonialists were villians incl Dutch, portugal,Belgians,Danish but a LOT lesser in magnitude esp compared to brits, spain,France,Turks etc.Enemy is american ship as per the book
cillantro 9 months ago
Those war drums in the soundtrack, and the flag rising up, and the cannons being rolled out... Gotta be proud of those fictional characters XD The French accent is a little unrealistic but I don't know, maybe French sounded a little different back then? The soundtrack is great for the battle as well, sounds almost Oriental.

Acheron in the movie is based largely on the design of the USS Constitution, Google and WIki will give you all you need on her.
2210ethan 11 months ago
What class of ship is the Acheron? If she's a frigate, that's one hell of a puncher. No offense to that particular class, but I don't really see much in a frigate. If it has cannons, it's gonna do damage for a fact. However, isn't Surprise supposed to be a frigate? It only has 24 guns, so I'd think of it more of...a small corvette?
DarthUltronicus 11 months ago
@DarthUltronicus They mention in the film that the Acheron is a heavy frigate, and designed to be a lot tougher than the Surprise. I guess she kinda fits in a class between frigate and genuine ship-of-the-line.

This is a movie about courage in the face of adversity. It's about your believes, superstitions, values and what you are willing to sacrifice for your friends and country.
The British do have some specific eccentricities which were picked up on in the film, probably because it was made by an Australian.
